  • What is the point of 'official' mpg figures? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The vehicle that we will be purchasing is a 2007/8 model Kia Sedona. According to the associated company blurb (official government fuel figures), this 7-seat behemoth returns a tad over 44 miles to the gallon on the extra-urban run. According to entries made by owners on other forums, on a 'run' they seem to average between 22 - 28 mpg?
  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - Autobox experience and reliability 21 Jan 2008 (Forum)
and what type of mileage can they see without giving problems? Is the driving experience much worse than the manual and what type of hit on fuel can I expect? I am aware of the suspension wear issues and possible electronic faults on this car and expect to pay more to run it than my current N reg Mondeo with 128k on the clock, I accept this but as I do quite a high mileage, at least 19000 a year, a 5mpg drop will cost and an autobox failure would not be ideal!
  • Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - '95 1.0 Dimension, cold start problems. 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
There was a slight burning smell whilst trying to run it cold and some smoke around the exhaust pipe (not coming out of it) I thought it was the autochoke needing adjusting or sticking, but the engine has a Bosch monopoint fuel injection system, so no choke. Have a receipt from 1 week ago for investigating starting problems - garage said exhaust was blocked causing spark plugs to foul up. They replaced the sparks and fitted new back box.

  • Advertising Standards (additives etc) ban 25 Nov 2007 (Forum)
(Funny how the car I had also seemed to know and went up to 98,000 miles with no valve bounce on its original valve springs ;) Now it seems the ubiquitous "Up To" are the weasel words that are inserted (with great skill) into modern (typically fuel or additives) advertisements. Time for new higher advertising standards to protect the largely naive motoring public from the ploys of very expensively crafted claims? It seems to me a good start would be for "Up To" to be banned and maximum and minimum figures with percentages to be used.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2003 1.6 16v - Sat Nav CD's & upgrades. 23 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Hi, I don't really know what I am talking about here so please just help me along when I look stuck! Ok, picked the car up yesterday and all is ok. Duel fuel, good MPG, good acceleration and all works (excepy for ciggy lighter thingy but they are going to fix that next week). The Sat Nav on an Vauxhall Astra Elegance (2003 1.6 16v) estate. If the disc is in the CD player - it will function.
  • Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 99, 2.5 TDi V6 - won't start - any ideas ??? 30 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I looked down the oil filler cap to ensure that the timing belt was OK & the belt is OK as everything in the rocker box is turning as it should. I then cracked ALL 6 injector pipes on top of the injectors & there's plenty of fuel pumping out of them all. I can squirt Easy Start into the air intake & the car fires up, but cuts out once the Essy Start has been burnt - I not do this too much for obvious reasons. So now I'm presuming that it's something electrical.
  • Help! Astra Twintop 1.9CDTi or Megane CC dCi150? 26 Oct 2007 (Forum)
As I see it: Twintop: better looking, slightly larger boot with top down, clever boot access with top down, slightly less road and wind noise and a bit more headroom in driver's seat. I've had Vauxhalls for ages and very happy with the local dealer. Megane CC: better quoted fuel economy and CO2 emissions, £60 less to insure, better spec (cruise, parrot bluetooth) but no remote top closure, no reall access to boot with top down and really naff chrome front pillars. Slightly wider inside, but seems to have a slightly higher rear sill so visibility not quite as good as the Twintop.
  • Toyota Yaris II/Vitz (2006 - ) - 07 - ecu light on again, despite 3 new cam sensors 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
We bought the wife, who is a driving instructor a brand new Yaris diesel 4 months ago.Within a week the engine management light showed up.We have now had 3 cam sensors fitted, including we were told by Toyota 'a different version' just last week. Now the light is on again. The dealer is getting another one in,but the wife has now threatened to leave the keys there if it is not repaired this time and a full refund of the car value.I believe we are entitled to this,as the fault has been on the car since new and the dealer has not sorted it.Everytime the car goes into be fixed, the wife looses revenue and clients and cost money in fuel ( 40 mile round trip). What is the next step to take.We don't really want to get rid of the car,as it is a nice sensible learning car,we just need to know how we can resolve the issue, because I don't believe fitting sensor no 4 is the answer.
  • Ford - Mondeo IV (2007 -) diesel or petrol 12 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Any views or opinions on the old petrol v diesel debate? If you look at it with an economical head on, the potential 4 grand saving in fuel over 5 years says it all!
  • Alfa Romeo 166 (1999 - 2005) - TS rough running 15 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I intend to check out the exhaust etc in daylight, but it has had a complete new exhaust in the last 18 months, so unless it's at the manifold (or gasket) I don't think it's that...could it be a need for new plugs, a fueling issue or the Lamda sensors... apparently these also wear out regularly! Comments, help or suggestions welcome...or have I bought a lemon already?
  • 5 door Subaru Impreza ? 13 Jul 2007 (Forum)
However I'm quite keen to improve the old cashflow and am toying with spending upto 5k on a 5 door Impreza Turbo. I'm aware fuel consumption will be poor relatively but I''m interested in your opinions as to the pro and cons. I confess I've never driven one, but the general concensus seems to be that they are basic inside but a are a hoot when on the move.
  • Diesels risks/costs widening on petrol? 13 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Is owning diesel, in particular buying used, even less viable from a cost/risk perspective as every year passes? Even with perfect fueling are diesel complexity and repair costs going to *continue to widen the gap* on petrol? Regards

  • R reg mondeo verona 1.8 h/b 11 Apr 2007 (Forum)
secondly........for a 1.8 it doesnt seem very quick at all, i have to take the revs upto 3500-4000 to get it motoring, when i put my foot down like this sometimes it will jerk / hesitate. thirdly........ even if i drive it sensibly (slow) it seems to be using a lot of fuel. i have no clues to what might be causing the obove so any help would be gratfully recieved as was the last people who helped me. thanks kevin.
  • Astra 1999-Abnormal Loss of power 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Eventually as well, there was a leak around the engine, i think near the gasket part or O-ring (in which i have sealed so far). My garage thought it was just simply timing adjustment, or fuel pump, coolant contaminants but these wont do and they say its still far from overhaul, as they themselves are puzzled with the problem and labeled it as WEIRD. I really dont know what is going on with my Astra '99 X16XEL but i have researched that this is common among opel astra models irregardless of whether its a new model or a very old model.
  • Peugeot 406 warning light 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It is to the right of the panel, immediately above the temp guage, next to the fog lamp lights. It looks like it could represent fuel or liquid as there seems to be a couple of wavy lines in a tank. I live on a hill and it only appears when the engine is cold, usually for as long as I am going up the hill. Once I level off it vanishes.
  • A question about diesel automatics? 17 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The reaosn I ask is that I do need economy (40,000 miles per year) and when I look at the 'official' fuel consumption figures, the auto's are quite a bit down on the manual's when you compare the combined figure but I am guessing that this is skewed by the auto being significanly less economical in the urban run and therefore affecting the combined figure.
  • rant of the week 1 Dec 2006 (Forum)
My other pet hates are in no particular order VOLVO drivers, they think they own the road, are always at the front of a queue, slowest away from the lights and hog the middle lane at 65 mph flat cap wearers, often driving volvo's and drivers of "P" REG CARS, frequently Volvo drivers and wearing flat caps and those as others who've mentioned people who can't drive at night, especially in Volovs. horse boxes and obviously caravans, of course they've got the right to use the road- just not between 06.00 and 20.00, especially if driving "p "reg Volvo's whilst wearing a flat cap. and finally foreign lorry drivers, not because they're foreign purely because they come over here fully loaded with fuel, destroying our roads and contributing jack, whilst causing many an accident with their un restricted speed limitors and not being used to driving on the left hand side. Yes I've had a bad day Rant over what are others pet hates
  • A mysterious problem - BMW 25 Nov 2006 (Forum)
clock in the morning) driving down the M1 from London, the engine dies just after J9 - was in 4th gear, 40mph. Tried to start it several times, the engine turns but doesn?t start. More than ½ tank of fuel in the car. We call the breakdown service. Wait for perhaps 25 minutes. My wife tells me, let?s try to start it again ? turn the ignition once, the engine fires. We ask the breakdown to not to come as the car seems to be running ok.
