Hi,
I don't really know what I am talking about here so please just help me along when I look stuck!
Ok, picked the car up yesterday and all is ok. Duel fuel, good MPG, good acceleration and all works (excepy for ciggy lighter thingy but they are going to fix that next week).
The Sat Nav on an Vauxhall Astra Elegance (2003 1.6 16v) estate.
If the disc is in the CD player - it will function. As in allow me to plot a course and it will direct me.
However, if I want to listen to a CD and take out the Sat Nav CD - it goes back to the 'Add a destination' startup screen.
Is this a software error or hardware issue?
Is it a settings issue - I have looked (inde'struction manual) but can't find it mentioned.
How do I get hold of an upgrade to the Sat Nav software, how do you tell what version software is currently installed/running and how much do they cost?
Thanks for all your help & replies in advance.
Dave.

Last Vauxhall I drove with sat-nav had, I'm sure, two disc slots. One for the radio cd player, and a separate one for the sat-nav disc. Never heard of having to lose the sat-nav function to listen to a CD.

On a significant number of satnav/radios you CANT listen to cd and use sat nav. It only has one drive and both the cd and the sat nav use it. There is only room for one actual cd.
Most people fit an extra multi cd autochanger to the radio to overcome the issue.

Well, that's a surprise! One more reason to just buy a TomTom. I've noticed that this car is a 2003, which I guess makes it a previous model Astra G, not the current Astra H (2004 on) as it's headlined. The H uses the later CD70 radio sat-nav and that definitely does have two separate slots. Not sure about the unit in the Astra G.

Not sure about the unit in the Astra G.
Sounds to me like it's an upgraded headunit from the standard factory fit. I wouldn't have thought a 2003 Astra Elegance would have Sat nav as standard. My previous 2004 Vectra Elegance certainly didn't.
I'm wondering if it's the Siemens NCDC 2013, but that has one slot at the top for the navigation CD, and a 4 disc multiplay CD player at the bottom - as per this example on ebay - tinyurl.com/235cxf
Tron, can you confirm the make/model of the headunit?

It is a Siemens NCDR 1100. This is a radio combined Sat Nav unit - have the user manual for it - cannot see a CD changer though! Looking at the facia around the unit, it all looks like it has been there since manufacture too.
Bit of a bummer if you are on a long trip and you can't have a CD to listen to - bad design that one!

which is why they were never popular, give the dosh they cost they were a severe compromise.
NOw days a lot of Nav units use DVDs so they have a DVD slot and a cd slot(multichange) slot
you mat be able to get and fit a cd multichanger to your radio,

One quick google reveals an optional 4 disc CD changer (mounted in the glovebox I believe) was available for this model.

Would recommend you direct any enquiries like this to www.astraownersnetwork.co.uk. They are an enthusiastic bunch and a mine of information on things of this nature. Be warned though - you might get encouraged to consider all manner of other upgrades and mods!
