The best first wheels 23 Jan 2021 (Forum)
People seem terrified of older cars, believing them to be unreliable and unsafe but I argue that they’re not and to land young drivers with a crippling monthly bill is unwise and only delays the day they can stand on their own two feet with head held high. They’ll be with you in their 40’s if they get into the PCP/Lease trap of a costly new car every few years. -
Driving in Kuwait 25 Aug 2006 (Forum)
They drive the smaller, lighter, older vehicles that make up such weird wrecked sculptures. Taxi-drivers, overwhelmingly immigrants, are not generally permitted any vehicle larger than a modest saloon. My taxi-driver, Amir, is a Bangladeshi who overworks because he's smart enough to realise that if he ever wants to see his kids' faces before they hit their teens then he's got to put money aside. -
Citroen C4 VTRI + Coupe - CITROEN C4 BSI UNIT BURNT OUT !!!!! 5 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The Guy informed me that the fault wasn’t down to Driver error and that he was going to advise the car be taking into Citroen and stripped to check why this unit had gone on fire. Citroen took the car into a local dealer. After 24 hours I called and was told they were not going to look into the car as the unit has been disturbed? -
Ford Focus - Faulty Car (Small Claims Court or Not) 21 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I informed the man of this issue and he said he won’t be giving me anymore money because I bought the car cheap (£525) he knew it was for a first time driver my partner and my young infant daughter under 1 years. He told me he was a trader and the car was faultless and he wouldn’t sell a car with any issues, I asked him this in writing a few times and he told me he wouldn’t make me drive 35 miles to a car with issues. -
BMW 528 Tourer - Dealer sold car with Speedo not working nd many ot 25 May 2013 (Forum)
He was very annoyed and told me not to come back, but I was relieved as I was in such a rush to drive 120 miles back home to pick up my young son. (Sorry this is a long message) On driving home, I noticed that the speedo was not working and was concerned about this, but knowing that the dealership was shut continued home to pick up my son. -
Risks buying certain 3yr old cars 24 May 2007 (Forum)
There are two models in a manufacturers range, discussed in another marque specific forum. One is typically bought by pensioners or young female drivers. It has few problems and seems a reasonable bet at 3 years old. The other model seems to have taken over the role of the old modded Novas or Corsa`s of a decade or so ago however Its not a Vauxhall. -
Why DO we have to have such wide tyres these days? 19 Feb 2013 (Forum)
(or is it merely that when grip IS lost, the car would have been going at a higher speed? In which case why not legislate that young drivers can only drive special speed-restricted Smart ForTwos: Skinny front tyres, and a maximum of 1 innocent passenger that can potentially be injured/killed... but I digress..) I thought that for a given corner weight and tyre pressure, the AREA of the contact patch remained constant as a tyre got wider - it just changed shape (?) -

Honda Jazz - Honda Servicing - Am I getting a proper Service ? 26 Jun 2012 (Forum)
On behalf of my Mum - 75 years young :-) She bought a brand new Honda Jazz i-Shift in 2009 and also the Honda Happiness Fixed Price Servicing Plan for 5 Services. Bought the car as it got good reviews from HJ and wanted as little trouble as possible - she is very happy with the car and finds i-Shift no problem. -
Polo chain cam failure 27 Aug 2015 (Ask HJ)
The Polo V (2009-) uses a cam chain which is now seeing more and more failures, and Volkswagen refuses to accept this is a quality problem, despite growing... -
Lexus RX400h - RX400h owner's review for gordonbennet 20 Jun 2019 (Forum)
I bought a 2006 Lexus RX400h four years ago, despite being and old git I was stupid enough to land myself with a young child and couldn’t spend four weekends a year maintaining my beloved P38 Range Rover, nor risk it breaking down – not that it ever did. So I bought Japanese. The car had done 50K miles, this period coincided with a massive drop off in my annual mileage so I’ve only put another 50K on it since. -
Scooter and motabilty car - Whiplash scam best way forward advice needed 2 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The damage is consistent with a front end impact followed by the vehicle falling to the ground. A young man was also present at the scene we presumed him to also be in the car however the claim form states there was only one other person in the vehicle. Only damage I noticed on the vehicle was that the rear bumper had been dislodged on the left hand side and had 2 small holes. -
Nissan Micra - 14 day French road test 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
One afternoon my wife and I walked down a scenic country road near Cahors in a touristy area for 4 km and were not passed by a single motor vehicle. Driving showed little gallic flair - drivers were invariably polite, and in 2 weeks I didn?t see any driving that raised my eyebrows. If I may be permitted a non-motoring tip, French supermarkets no longer give out poly bags. We learned this the hard way when we popped into a supermarket and loaded up with supplies. -
RIP Diesel Hatchback 20 Jun 2020 (Forum)
As a young junior salesman I had to pick my cars from the low value or supermini range and while there’s fun to be had from wringing the neck of a small capacity normally aspirated petrol motor in a small fwd car I soon settled into the habit of picking what is fast becoming extinct today, the diesel supermini. -
Letter from the Colonies 5 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Every establishment has a security guard on the door and if you tip him P20 (that\'s about 5 pence) he\'ll watch your vehicle for you. Taxi hire in UK: I have a very nice driver chappie who will pick me up at LHR and take me to T/Wells. He has a comfortable Vectra and is very chatty and reliable. He charges £75 for an hour and a bit journey. I have no doubt this is reasonable. -
A week with an MG3 26 Jun 2014 (Forum)
It wouldn’t get kicked out of VW’s quality bed for badly designed f***ing. The only let down is the driver’s seat in this car which sometimes creaks. Day 4: Britain is gripped by WIND CHAOS this morning. The MG3 seems to cope perfectly well with a firm breeze. Mind you, so do all the other cars on road. -
First wheels 7 May 2007 (Forum)
The oscillation was far more violent than I expected and I lacked the courage for the McRae solution, being a very inexperienced driver, so I slowed to a crawl instead and then cautiously got back up to speed. It occurred three times on the way to Chiswick. Having no money and no licence I gave (he says I took 25 quid off him for it, but I don?
