Citroen Relay - Van Smoking Heavily! Please help 19 May 2015 (Forum)
There is a massive oil leak, that is dripping onto my alternator (battery light is on, although voltage is 14.2 at idle) I feel this leaves me with 3 or 4 options, and i'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. -
X plate Citroen Saxo diesel - 2000 Saxo Diesel cold running 63000 miles 24 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Full history, regular oil/filter/fuel filterchanges. Recent glow plugs and 10,000 miles ago a cam belt and water pump plus a battery. It drives, idles and starts without fault apart from the following fault; when cold it starts first time and ildles perfect , at the moment I have to wait 5 minutes for it to warm up and all is good and I can drive off. if I touch the accelerator before it warms up it stalls and excess smoke due to me trying to restart. -
BMW 3 Series E46 - water leaking under carpet in drvers footwell. 16 May 2014 (Forum)
Although the rear footwells are bone dry, the boot has this musty smell yet theres no water visible under the spare tyre or where the battery is...any ideas? The guy I bought it from had the windscreen replaced but I can't feel anything wet or see anything leaking either. I don't have a sunroof. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate your help. -
Audi A6 air leak - how can I fix it? 17 Mar 2014 (Ask HJ)
My Audi A6 2.5 TDI takes ages to start. I suspect air in the fuel line. Any ideas where this might get in and any tips on fixing it? I -
Volkswagen Polo III (1.4 petrol) - Engine got wet in floods and wont start at all. 8 Jan 2014 (Forum)
It is at 94k miles, but Ive looked after it well, mechanically, its got new filters, oil, battery, starter motor, rotor arm and cap, spark plugs plus a few other bits. I have looked at the car today, there is no water in the air filter, its not even damp, so I can assume that it hasn't sucked up water somehow. -
VW Gold 140 TDI 2004 Plate - Golf 140 TDI warm start problem - starts fine cold 24 Aug 2013 (Forum)
When the engines warm, it doesn’t start very easily, in fact it turns over for a few seconds before it eventually starts, almost like it’s stalled or the batteries flat. There’s various views and opinions surrounding this, which are available on the internet. A number of views on the internet point to glow plugs as a possibility. My garage chap, ran diagnostics on the car and it returned a fault with ‘Glow Plugs’. -
Toyota Avensis 1999 (V plate) - Toyota Avensis Starting problems 27 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Battery has been checked and passed and it was suggested that the starter motor is sticking. Although I don't know a great deal about cars I do know the 'click' of a starter that has jammed! To try to eliminate the starter we have left the car unlocked all day (thus unarmed alarm) and had 5 perfect starts. -
Toyota Avensis 2.0 Diesel D-4D - White smoke (steam?), didnt crank the first time 29 May 2012 (Forum)
For example it started this morning in the first turn (when left overnight), but failed to start in the first two tries when I had it parked for an hour or so after a 30 mile drive. (Initially it felt as if the battery is dead as the key turn didnt crank the engine, but then all the dashboard lights and the fan etc were working normally. Also it started on the 3rd or 4th try normally) Could this be due to a failed glow plug as some posts on HJ seemed to suggest? -
Convince me! 18 May 2012 (Forum)
It's a long story, but I've got rid of it. Now - My Toyota has been standing for the past 4 months, and apart from charging up the battery, there is not a single problem with it - and its covered 190k. That's the kind of car I want - it'll get me from A to B, get about 34mpg from a petrol Auto, and seat 5 in comfort. All things a 10 year old Carina can manage easily. -
Ford Galaxy Mk2 2001 2.3 Ghia manual petrol - Immobiliser problems 20 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Normally it just goes solid red and goes out when car starts. Sooo I have tried the spare key (no change still randomly does/doesn't work). New battery a few months ago - made no difference. Sometimes the car is fine for weeks, sometimes (this last few days) it has failed to start about 7 times. Will eventually start - just turn car off, back on, back off for up to 10 minutes(eek!) -
VW Golf III 1.8 Driver 1994..e.c ABS - VW Golf III wont start when warm 15 Nov 2011 (Forum)
fitted it, same problem remained, started fine then died after half mile.Fuel pump fuse fine, petrol coming out of hose at throttlebody when engine turned over at key,so think fuel pump ok, getting a spark ok,(recent new dist. cap and rotor, new plugs and leads) battery fine. Cleaned out throttlebody with carb cleaner, cleaned various earth connections, noticed broken wire on two-pin connector on engine block.below flexi pipe, under left hand side of throttlebody, fixed that, re-assembled everything, car started fine, left it running til warm then switched off, wouldnt start again. -
Renault Scenic DCi 2002 - Starting problems - EGR Valve? 28 May 2011 (Forum)
Earlier today my wife 'phoned to say that her 02 Scenic DCi had broken down (luckily not far from our house), apparently the engine had simply cut out and would not restart. I tried to start the car, the starter was spining OK, battery had plenty of power, half a tank of diesel, but no joy although once or twice it sounded like it tried to fire up. I noticed the engine management light, ABS and stop lights were illuminated when the ignition was on. -
Citroen Saxo - 2003 Saxo 1.5D does not want to budge. Part 2 1 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Turned engine off, waited a few mins, turned key to start after about 10secs it finally started - it sounded like how it did before I used the aerostart. Again continuosly smoking. Now this morning I've come to start it again, and Nothing its battery seems flat (although ive got a lot of spark off it - tapping it with a wire) and yet again it fails to start when turning over. What is causing the bubbles? Whats causing the horrid smoke, and is the Idle set to high? -
Peugeot 306 HDi 2.0 (2000) - 306 HDi...possibly a dumb question 9 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I have a 306 which wouldnt start, I ruled out the LP pump by powering it via a sealey power probe and a spare battery and the car starts and runs fine After looking into common faults with this model and bearing in mind I probably know less about cars than the average 6 year old girl this might be a world class dumb question lol So far I have figured out the following The fuel on is pumped by the LP pump in a circle back to the tank and the HP pump takes only the fuel it needs The LP pump primes for 10 seconds in the pre ignition phase to allow for a car thats run out of fuel but runs constantly once the engine has started So rather than finding the fault thats stopping power from getting to the LP pump which icould be the pump relay, the connector, the wiring itself an ECU output or maybe even the emergency fuel cut off solenoid (its a diesel so not as risky as a petrol model) what, if any are the downsides of just powering this pump from a 15A supply that becomes live with the ignition? -
Bye CR-V, hello… 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
The only problems were the rear diff making a “groaning” noise, this was sorted by changing the diff oil for a different spec. All four alloys started to bubble so were replaced. The worst problem was the battery going flat. This was last winter and the ECU didn’t shut down the electrics so there was a constant drain, after three days it wouldn’t even turn over. This was sorted with a software update. -
Peugeot 307SW - HDi 110 - AntiPollution Fault - Random Cooling Fan overrun 31 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I have as others have had a random fan cutting in and also on shut down that runs and almost drains the battery. Alongside this is the issue of the 'AntiPollution fault and engine light that comes on. History - A year ago after a long blast back from Devon the warning came on. A couple of short trips round town just before taking the car to a local 'good' Peugeot' garage it went out. -

Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 02 1.2 Starts then wont start 14 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Almost every sensor has been replaced in the last year by Renault, new crank sense loom, metal crash box removed, new coil and leads, relays by the battery checked and terminals cleaned, (although it will run from cold and can be restarted when hot) Its almost as if something that energises the coil, cuts out after ign is turned off and is failing to switch on again after its been run... -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.8 Do Engine Warning Lights Get Bored? 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Anyway, the EGR valve I'd put in would probably have benefited from a clean and I put the light coming back on as being the valve sticking. The car still drove normally. As what I thought might be proof, I disconnected the battery to reset the light and looked to see how many miles I could go before it came back. I figured if the valve didn't work at all it would be back in a few miles. It was over 1000 miles before it came back so I felt happy with my diagnosis.
