  The used market continues to polarise at two different levels. Rejected reps cars remain on the rocks. And though, year for year, BMWs are making more than twice as much, even prices of these have been slipping a bit. The 45,000 mile silver 99T 523iSE in the photo had a full BMW service history with the last one just 2,000 miles ago.

  Almost exactly 18 years after the Rover 75 first wowed the crowds at the British International Motor Show, the very last Chinese-built version has finally bid adieu – bringing to an end a fascinating story of hope, failure and resurrection. Unveiled in October 1998, the 75 was BMW-owned Rover’s crucial new addition to the executive saloon market, replacing both the 600 and 800 ranges. But when BMW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder used the Rover 75’s launch to focus on Rover Group’s mounting losses, the entire future of the company was suddenly in doubt.

  But prices being paid the first day of December certainly aren’t. The closest to a ‘cheap’ car I saw today was the 103k mile 2004/54 BMW 120dSE un the photo. Top bid for that was £8,300 provisional. Almost everything else made a lot of money. And one fleet was so confident of rising prices in January, it reserved its cars so high its sale was virtually boycotted.

  A 46,000 mile E39 525iSE manual with a fair few scratches bid to £14,600. A 52,000 mile E46 318iSE sold for £9,200. BMWs didn’t have it all their own way, though, because lumpiness still kills these cars. A 99T BMW E36 1.8Ti Compact that looked like it had been following a gravel lorry for its 101,000 miles failed to raise more than £5,350.

  1987 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth barn findsold for £47,250 A two-owner 1967 250 selling at the higher end of its estimate at £81,900 including premium, while a 1957 190SL rested at the lower end, selling at £61,950 plus premium. The limited edition BMW E30 M3 Europameister sold at £38,850, with all but one of the dozen BMWs on offer also finding new homes. With its biggest-ever Capri offering, auction house saw the last off the line 280 Brooklands sell for £14,910 including premium.

  MINI celebrates a century of car production in Oxford 19 Dec 2012 (News)
  MINI will be celebrating a centenary of car production at its factory in Oxford. Parent company BMW may call the factory 'Plant Oxford', but most car enthusiasts still refer to it as Cowley - the site that the first Bull Nosed Morris rolled off the line in 1913. The main centenary date will be 28 March.

  But a fresh timing belt and waterpump should see it through to 150,000, and it’s a current shape car. The least expensive BMW X5 I’ve yet seen was a 2001X 4.4 with all the kit but a small matter of 89,000 miles. That sold for £24,700. An 84k mile 98S Alfa 156 2.5 V6 seemed cheap at £3,350 among the part-exchanges, but an ex-finance 63k mile 2000W Alfa 156 2.5 V6 Sport was even cheaper at £3,425.

  BMW has announced prices for the first UK arrivals of its new E46 Compact. The cars go on sale in the UK on 16th August 2001, but dealers are now taking orders and most buyers are likely to opt for September delivery to get the latest registration.
