Peugeot 406 indicating left by itself 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I took the cowling off the steering wheel but wasn't brave enough to remove the screws holding the cover on the black box thing. I also wondered whether a weak battery could cause these electrical maladies. It is the original (almost 6 years old) and the car does a lot of short journies. Any ideas gratefully received. -
Omega 2.0L cam gasket replace help 16 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hello all, [ 2.0L 16v ecotec- auto 1994 ] found oil in my spark plug holes the other day, car was running a little sluggish. I believe it's the cam cover gasket gone, so I'm about to replace it. I've got the gasket, sealant rings for the bolt-holes & blue sealant. Can anyone advise me where exactly the sealant goes please? -
Rover 45 2.0 TDi starting problems 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have tried leaving the glow plug light on for longer before trying to start it, but the only thing which seems to eventually work is to pump the accelerator until it eventually catches. The car has covered 74,000 miles and although the battery appears to be the original the cranking speed seems fine and the battery condition indicator has always been green. Under normal conditions I hardly turn the key and she is away and runs great returning approx. 50-54mpg. -
Disabled Parking at Asda 12 Dec 2005 (Forum)
A Traffic Regulation Order has been approved starting from Monday 12 December and anyone parking in the bays without a valid blue disabled parking badge will be issued a fixed penalty notice. You have been warned. Pity it won't cover all of what me and my wife saw when we came out. Fiat Punto parked in one of said bays, no blue disc, no tax disc, driver sat in car. Passenger gets in, driver leaves the bay with three unstrapped kids on back seat, the oldest of which (no more than 8 or 9) is holding a baby. -
Autoglass Radio Advert 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Second question. In the advert it states (not word for word) that a windscreen is part of the cars structural strength and, if it is chipped or cracked, it could affect the airbag activation!!! How do they work this out? And how are they allowed to scaremonger like this on a radio advert? -
3500 miles in a week! 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
- Or 8 days to be precise; anyone else covered this kind of distance in so short a time?! Went from S. France to Copenhagen, dropped off the family then rented a Mondeo for 3 days work all over Sweden. Then back to France. High spot - getting an indicated 145mph out of the S60 on a deserted German motorway in the wee small hours... -
Renault Laguna timing belt 25 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I have recovered it to the garage and they are replacing the rockers covers !!! as well as the timing belt. Is it likely that any other damage was caused, the garage says that te pistons are ok. When it happened there was no major noises exept the shredding of the auxillary belt. -
Quoted me happy! 19 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Well I have the revised schedule and there it is, my wife and I are both insured to use my car while going about our respective employer's business, apparently the £32 related to being self employed. Although I would have claimed the additional cost from my employer I still consider myself quoted happy. -
1995 Rover 414 Headgasket 16 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The owners would like to know if it is worth repairing as the car only cost under a grand. I presume the engine is the somewhat fragile K series and if so do they have wet liners that can leak from the lower seals? What is the spares situation likely to be since Rover went belly up? -
Severe Rocker Failure Ford Fiesta 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, When I pulled off the M-way after a 2 hr drive on Monday I noticed the car, Ford Fiesta XR2i 1.6 H Reg, had lost a lot of power and was reluctent to drive. I got it home safely, back to London, but when I took the rocker cover off today I found the rocker arm, on the top left nearest the cam belt, No1 I think, had completely sheared off and cracked away from around the mounting and nut and was just lying sideways in the top of the head. -
GAP insurance 9 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Of course we haven't been given the T&C so I don't know all the situations which would be covered: certainly if it was nicked and not recovered, or written off. Now since in 20+ years of motoring I've only had one write-off (someone else driving) and one non-recovered theft, I'm not 100% convinced by this. -
Nissan X-Trail rear bumper protection 16 Apr 2004 (Forum)
My X-Trail is used by the dog for the usual stuff like taking me for walks, expensive trips to the vets etc. When I got the car I had a black plastic film applied to the rear bumper to protect it from damage from the dog's claws amongst other things. I didn't think Nissan's own protector accessory was up to the job as it didn't cover the edge of the bumper. -
Golf - How does auto choke work? 28 Mar 2004 (Forum)
This morning I removed the air filter cover from my 1.3 MkII Golf so that I could watch how the choke worked from cold. The car is not running quite right when I frist start it up but is OK when warm. 1. It startsfirst time and runs A1 for 20 secs or so. 2. -
Whining Honda alternator 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The car, a Honda Prelude 1990 H reg has covered only 64K. The alternator appears to be whining. Alternators can pack up at around 70K. The trouble with alternators is that they can fail without warning, usually at night when you need headlights. -
Rust bubble on Nissan QX 8 Feb 2004 (Forum)
There have been rust bubbles on right-rear-wheel arch of my 1995 Nissan QX. The bubbles were first noticed 6 months ago, covering a surface area of 10mm x 10mm. Now the bubble is getting more pronounce and started to spread round the folded part of metal towards the side of the car. Paint is not cracked. No rust is showing. -
Cost running petrol v diesel 7 Sep 2003 (Forum)
This may have been covered before but has anyone worked out the costs of running two similar cars - one with a petrol engine and another on diesel. I am interested in two scenarios - buying new and at, say, three years old. -
DVLA strange letter 6 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Are they trying to fine me for the nine days it was untaxed (despite starting my present licence to cover that period) or is this just a blip on their part, i.e not having received details from the PO I renewed my tax at? Anybody know of this? -
Should i get a tracker? 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Having got some insurance quotes, i will save £70 if i get a tracker fitted - not a big save considering the initial outlay. The other argument that i will more than likely get my car back if it gets nicked - i'm not sure i'd want it back! If it does get nicked & i don't get it back, i was looking at the financial implecations. Apart from the insurance excess, i should be pretty much covered. -
How long did you stay? 20 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I went to see a 'new' car described as 'one owner, fsh, lovely condition' recently. OK it was 10yo, but that's still 4 yrs younger than the one I currently drive. When I arrived, I immediately spotted a severely cracked bumper and a fair-sized gouge in the bonnet. -
Early Rover 214 injection 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
A retired ex-colleague of mine has an early 'F' reg Rover 214 which his wife uses. The car is his ex company vehicle, has covered 57k miles and is immaculate. He has recently encountered some difficulty with his injection system and has been told by the Rover dealers in Slough, that they no longer have diagnostic equipment suitable for such an old vehicle!
