  • Reliability Surveys - Expectations 6 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Leafing through the "What Car?" reliability surveys it is noted as ever that the prestiege marques came out very low down the table while some more budget brands came very high up. Since these surveys do not take account of just full breakdowns but also of little niggles that keep the car off the road, could this possibly be because of different owner expectations.
  • Hyundai i10 - Hyundai i10 clutch gone after 15000 miles 12 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Its only done 15000 miles whilst driving home the clutch started to slip and I was struggling to make any momentum, I thought Id get home but I ened up aout 6miles from home at the side . Called the Hyundai breakdown who sent the RAC I waited for an hour, because the dealer was open they took the car there where theyve said they will look at it tomorrow and report back to me. Its still under warranty so it shouldnt be any cost to   me.

They changed the engine oil and filter after regening the DPF, apparently the oil was corrupted and had been running above the fill level.
  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 04 dci 1.5 EGR valve prob? 5 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Hi. The engine management light on my 04 clio dci 1.5 came on, on Friday got my breakdown out and they advised it was due an EGR valve fault and reset the car and would be ok to drive and if the light came on again to see a garage Well the light has come on again and the only thing that seems to be difference is the fuel comsumption.
  • Aston Martin DB7 (1994 - 2003) - Insurance 20 Apr 2008 (Forum)
As the owner of a number of high performance cars, including an Aston Martin and an Alfa Romeo GTA, I always regard it as a personal challenge to improve significantly on my insurance renewal premiums when I am notified of them. I have just received my Alfa renewal and it was £423 including breakdown cover.
  • 1996 Megane 1.4 sudden cutout 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I usually park it in the same car park every weekday, so I don't suspect a transmitting device (e.g. mobile phone mast) which has activated the immobilser. Any ideas?
  • patronosing letter from the AA 6 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Just had a letter from the AA saying my good lady and I have called them out 4 times in the present year(runs oct to oct for me)Apparently I am allowed 6 after which they will charge me £95 for any subsequent breakdown. To cap it all they said if our cars are unreliable call into one of their service centres where their experts would be able to service them. One of the callouts was for pop up headlights which didn't and their guy couldn't fix it.
  • Prospective 300SE purchase 20 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The car is not for me and will be garage maintained if bought, although by a suitable specialist rather than M-B. I'll check the directory listings but any suggestions for a specialist on Tees-side will be welcomed.
  • Fiat Brava 31 Jan 2003 (Forum)
SWMBO is getting a new car and last weekend we saw some Brava's in GTC in the most gross mauve colour I have ever seen. She loved them, also teh styler, which again didn't impress me. Still, it's her money so I will just go along with her choice.
  • Family car for £4000 11 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I would like to buy from a garage to get the piece of mind of a warranty. A garage approx. 50 miles from me has the above types of car for sale, all 1 owner with print out FSH and high mileage (65 - 90K). I have looked at the car by car breakdown, but I would like to hear from people who have had experience of any of the above cars or can suggest other alternatives.
  • Advice on Choice of Daily Commute Car? 13 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The car must be under 5 years old, as company rules state that the car must be 5 years or under, so no point getting a 4.5 year old car and then having to change in 6 months. Ideally should have a least 1 years use out of it.
  • No depreciation £5-8k sport car 24 May 2005 (Forum)
What's come to mine is an mid-80s Porsche 911 coupe for £6-8k. What's there to look for on these cars other than in the c-by-c breakdown? My main worry is that everything will be welded/rusted together on a 20 year-old car and, as I will be working on the car myself, I will be blow-touching when comes to replacing parts.

  • Older car specs (esp FIAT) 17 Jan 2003 (Forum)
(I know Parkers paper guide has some of this info and will invest in one at the w/e if no-one comes up trumps) Also if anyone has any views on engine size, number of valves and the Speedtronic gears I would be happy to hear them. The CbC breakdown seems to indicate a reliable little car... TIA

  • Who said Japanese cars are reliable! 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I am picking up my New Golf GTI in 2 weeks time although the honest John car by car breakdown does not give the mark 5 golf a high reliablitly write up either. My feeling is modern cars are not as reliable as they used to be. Cheers Jlo
  • Rejecting faulty Vectra 12 Jun 2005 (Forum)
New type 2004 Vectra 2.2Dti estate auto purchased last month from long established independent Vauxhall specialist (not a Vauxhall dealer). Car has 28,000 miles, of which about only 750 miles done by me. Auto box has failed. Car recovered to a Vauxhall main dealer, who has been trying to fix problem for 9 days. Since the car suffered such a catastrophic breakdown before I'd even had the car a month, I'm considering rejecting the car.
  • small cars 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I thought it pretty well banged together. In fact very well put together.Up to Jap standards. The Car by car Breakdown said it handled quite well but trim levels were not up to Yaris,Jazz,Polo. It may be that the review was written in 2001. I thought the trim looked OK myself. What about todays plastic bumpers in city parking dings?
