Rejecting faulty Vectra - Blackbushe boy
New type 2004 Vectra 2.2Dti estate auto purchased last month from long established independent Vauxhall specialist (not a Vauxhall dealer). Car has 28,000 miles, of which about only 750 miles done by me.

Auto box has failed. Car recovered to a Vauxhall main dealer, who has been trying to fix problem for 9 days. Since the car suffered such a catastrophic breakdown before I'd even had the car a month, I'm considering rejecting the car. The car has been unavailable for more than a quarter of the short perion I've owned it. Vauxhall dealer has loaned me an Astra hatch auto, but I need an estate. Vauxhall HQ customer service has been unsympathetic, particularly to my specific need for an auto estate.

Deliberately put part of the purchase price on a credit card to give some extra consumer protection. Would appreciate any comments regarding my chances of successfuly rejecting the car.

(Have put separate posting on Technical secton of this site, relating to resolving the auto box issues).

Suggest you put in writing your request for a refund and send it recorded, CC it to your credit card company. Give 7 days for a response, if they don't play ball or fail to respond, drop the car off at the point of sale, tell them your rejecting it, if they still don't refund you then walk away and contact credit card company to recover the cost of the car. (leaving car at garage)

Suggest you look at www.dti.gov.uk section on Fact sheets and Faq's deals with car sales, new and second hand, and consumers fights and rejection under Car Sales and Car Servicing. Also gives useful links to trading standards etc.

Rejection is subject to 'reasonable time' which is not defined but I would advise you to act promptly and put erything in writing stating clearly your reasons for rejecting the car.

Reject your Vectra and part ex it for something Japenese, they don't get these problems, I've had experience with trying to reject a car to GM Good Luck you'll need it. All their cars are (no swearing allowed) rubbish.

Quite!!

Hence the edit in italics. Next time it happens, I'll simply delete the text and flatfour2's account.

Without wishing to hijack the thread, I'm very pleased with my Vectra. Still miss the V6 of my ZT, but the Vectra's quite, comfertable (even with 19" alloys) and is pretty economical. I judge things as I find them and mine's OK!

I am a high milage driver and change my car every two years for something new. Less then a year ago I was tempted by a 2.2 petrol vectra and have not looked back.

Before that I had an Avensis, which had real rear visability problems. Interior was not well made on it.

Had a Primera TDi that was ok just not economical for an oil burner.

The Vectra beats both overall though the Nissan is a close second.

Back to the point. If the seller can fix it would you want it back? Things do occasionally go wrong with things as complicated as cars and whilst it is a pain the dealers should accept it and be prepaired to fix it or offer a refund.

Why not ask trading standards what options are available to you?

I am obviously too dim to see the problem. Is it because GM cars were rubbished, that he recommended getting a Japanese car, or that he spelt Japanese incorrectly?

Machika, lets just say that I objected to his description of Japanese people which was subsequently removed.
