  • A Grand Monday: Truimph Acclaim, £650 20 Jun 2016 (News)
The owners clearly like it, having sourced and spent money on a brand new replacement gearbox (though where they found one, we have no idea…), and they appear to have a genuine reason for sale, although relocating to Devon could actually be the charmed life that the old Triumph is crying out for. It’s not perfect by any stretch. A flick through the online MoT history shows advisories at the last test for corrosion on the sills, so this will need dealing with, and it has clearly had welding around the front chassis legs and rear of the sills in the past – but then it’s a 34-year old Triumph with Japanese body panels, so on balance it’s done pretty well.
  • A Grand Monday: Rover 400 27 Mar 2017 (News)
The interior didn't feel as special, the cabin a bit cramped, and the styling was largely considered less elegant than the outgoing car. Viewed today, though, the HHR - especially in Rover-only four-door saloon form - is a simple and elegant machine. It has aged much better than many cars younger than it, perhaps because it looked old-fashioned when new, so has never really dated.

Boxster Sells for £13k at Auction Today 29 Sep 2004 (News)
While Beetlemania occurred when someone paid £8,000 for a 58k mile 2002/52 VW Beetle TDI. Yet Monday’s Top Car price of £12,400 for a 56k 02 reg BMW 320dSE Compact looked a bit excessive compared to today’s of £11,300 for a 41k mile 2002/52. At least cars are now coming though in quantity.
  • The Only Thing to Smile About at Auction Today 17 Sep 2004 (News)
Once again every trader I spoke to was muttering doom and gloom. Showroom business is so bad they were taking more calls from punters wanting to sell them cars than from punters wanting to buy cars. Yet auction prices remain rock solid. Even this 2002/52 reg FunTech 50cc three wheeler buggy with no keys, no V5 and a dubious past sold for a substantial £1,700.

A rusty 1934 Bentley that had been stored in a garage for the past 30 years sold for £454,250 at auction. The car, which was owned by Second World War RAF pilot Charles Blackham, sold at H&H’s Duxford sale on 20 March. Blackham took part in the raid to bomb Hitler’s mountain-top retreat in the Bavarian Alps in April 1945. He bought the car, which was one of six assembled from new-old stock parts, in 1952 for £260 and drove it until he died earlier this year, aged 96.
  • Vauxhall launches scrappage scheme 15 Nov 2016 (News)
‘We’re also confident that the number of genuine classics over 25 years old presented to the scheme will be minimal, especially given the steady rise in value of even the most mainstream collectors’ cars in recent years. But if we do see any, our ‘safety-net’ will ensure that classic car owners and clubs will benefit.’ The scheme starts today, Tuesday 15 November 2016 – and other mainstream car makers could soon follow.
