  • F1 Cars 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Is it just me, or do any others think that since they were narrowed by about 8" & slicks outlawed that they look a little ridiculous? I mean, the so called premier motorsport & they run on grooved tyres? On the same subject, imagine a F1 car embodying all the banned technology of the past... Ground effects, turbos, active suspension and whilst we're at it throw in Gordon Murray's suction fan for good measure...
  • Primera brakes 30 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1997 2litre Nissan Primera. When I push the brake pedal really hard (with the engine running) I can feel the pedal come to a mechanical stop before it is anywhere near the floor. The brakes don't feel really up to the mark under an emergency stop either. I have checked the pedal to floor dimension and it agrees with the manual.
  • Fiat Uno (Again) Battery draining 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Fuly charged battery with a charger. Refitted, but still not enough power. Used jump leads and got car started. Took for a run and turned off and on a few times. Went back to car today and nothing. Battery flat. Nothing was left on. All cells are OK. Battery gone???
  • Cambelt change 9 Jul 2003 (Forum)
According to the service guide it should have the cambelt changed at 50,000 miles or 5 years. Is this really necessary? It is mainly used for school runs, shopping and family holidays. Also Ford want £265 inc for the job. Can you recommend somewhere better and cheaper in North West London/Watford area? Regards ... Gary

  • Pulling to the Left 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
My old non-power-steering Volvo 440 ('G' reg) pulls to the left, it's not violent and it seems to be the same whether under braking or not. If you take your hands off the wheel it'll run into kerb within 3-4 seconds. Have checked tyre pressures and they're OK, it passed its MOT so I presume steering geometry and suspension bits are OK, anyone got any ideas? Cheers
  • Sporty Little Number 14 Jun 2003 (Forum)
She wants a small sporty number preferably Japanese such as Mazda MX5, Toyota MR2, Honda Somehting-or-other. Budget is £5K and I want something reliable and not too expensive to run but fun to drive. I'd consider anything up to about 5 yrs old. Am I asking for a bit too much for £5K. Anyone have any suggestions?
  • ZX diesel/diesel turbo - same engine? 31 May 2003 (Forum)
Just one more question folks (and thanks v much for the feedback on the last one - v helpful), does anyone know if the 1.9 diesel is the same basic engine - and mounting - as the turbo diesel? Just that there's a running, good condition, rear-end damage ZX 1.9d just down the road, and if it's the same engine sounds ideal to drop into my 1.9td.
  • Radiators - how to check they are workin 26 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi, Not sure my radiator is working okay. The top pipe that goes into the radiator gets hot after a run. The bottom pipe attached to the radiator is cold. Equally, the top end of the radiator is hot and the bottom end cold. Does this suggest a blockage in the radiator or is this how radiators work, (ie pumps in hot water from the top where it is then cooled by the time it is released through the bottom pipe).
  • 91 Astra 1.4i Merit 24 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi This beast has developed what can only be described as a screeeeeching noise mainly at low engine revs which goes once on the move and engine rpm> 2000 . It sounds alternator vicinity ish - is it safe to run with alternator drive belt removed (apart from obvious danger of discharging the battery) for fault finding purposes. If it is alternator bearings which I suspect is this a feasible DIY option? Cheers NormanB
  • spark plug noise 21 May 2003 (Forum)
I took two of my spark plugs out this morning to check the condition. Gave them a wipe and stuck them back in. When the engine is running I\'ve noticed a clicking sound coming from the engine, in the area of the plugs that I took out. Have I over tightened one of them or just not put the leads on correctly? The engine seems to drive fine no other problems.
  • BMW 320d - Compact 21 May 2003 (Forum)
Was lent one of these today whilst the 530d was in for a minor glich (rough running, traced to a ECU software fault). What a great little motor, certainly had plenty of poke and felt just as solid as its bigger brothers that I have driven, felt more like the 330d (character etc etc) than the 530d does.
  • Mondeo TD Ignition light 20 May 2003 (Forum)
My ignition light has just started coming on while the engine is running, it goes off whren the revs rise up but stays on on tickover. the rev counter also shows that the car is only ticking over on 250 rpm, normally 850-900 rpm, but the engine sound has not changed. Does the car have some sort of voltage regulator?
  • Renault diesel-unfeasibly high emissions 14 May 2003 (Forum)
My 1996 60,000 mile Laguna diesel failed it's MOT emissions test - which at 60k miles it shouldn't do I reckon. Maybe my daily 5 mile trips are to blame in that the engine never really warms up or gets a fast run? Can anyone suggest the the cheapest way of fixing this - a mate reckons I need to change the injectors...?
  • BMW Tyre Wear 9 May 2003 (Forum)
A friend runs a G reg. bmw 735i SE (150,000 miles & picked up for next to nothing) He has recently noticed a bald patch appearing in just one area on the outside edge of the front offside tyre. The tracking is fine & no wheel imbalance can be felt through the steering wheel.
  • Any fellow classic car fans out there? 7 May 2003 (Forum)
Obviously, as a self-confessed fan of classics (and I do count the Marina amongst them), I'm just wondering how many of the people in the BR would like to run a classic. And if they actually managed it, what classic would it be? Cheers guys and gals Rob

  • Saxo cambelt-advice please. 23 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1998 1.4 saxo which has only done 33K miles to date. Mostly short runs 4-5 miles each journey. Citroen advise change the cambelt at 72K service and they do not give a time limit. What should I do? As the car is coming up to 5 years old I feel inclined to get the belt changed but is this necessary?

  • Sludge 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
With just the pottering type mileage she does it is to be expected - but should I be concerned about it? Is there an easy way to get rid of it, such as me using the car for my long journey runs or should I use an engine flush or...... Be pleased to hear suggestions/observations
