  • Car hunting nightmare 4 Feb 2016 (Forum)
The brands I am mostly looking at (unless anyone says avoid): Citroen Fiat Ford Nissan Renault Suzuki Vauxhall Volvo    Not sure if I am ranting or asking for help on suggestions.
  • Vauxhall Vivaro - Watch your mirrors 18 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Spotted blue lights in my mirror; all traffic in Lane 3 slotting neatly into Lane 2 to let the two police cars through (one black and unmarked, the other a dog patrol in a Volvo). I moved over too. But in front of me was a black 12-reg Vivaro (might have been a Renault or Nissan I suppose) and the police sat on its tail for a mile or so, sirens and blue lights going: did the driver give way? Did he even notice? No, steady 50mph in Lane 3. Unobservant? Driving WDC&A?
  • Which one? - Buying 11 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Doesn´t have cheap road tax and the interior looked a bit bland. Vauxhall Astra - sitting position was very uncomfortable. Renault Megane - had one of these as a courtesy car once and liked it. Citroen C4 - haven´t driven this but I do like French cars, although the horror stories about reliability puts me off this one but I like the fact it is different.
  • Skoda Citigo - Red face 21 Jul 2014 (Forum)
My grandson suffered a blown headgasket on his Renault Espace that required the RAC to recover the car.  They gave him a Skoda Citigo hire car to get him home.  Next morning it was left outside the house opposite theirs and I was asked to move it to their house for collection after the family had gone to work in their own cars.
  • 7 seater MPV - Child restraint not allowed in the middle seat ?!? 18 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Apart from the obvious safety concern I am worried there may be some catch for the insurance etc if you go ahead and put 3 seats against the manufacturers advice. We are considering Seat Alhambra, VW Sharan, Ford S Max, Peugeot 5008, Renault Grand Espace, or perhaps Kia Carens. Would be grateful for your experience and advice!
  • Driving Mini Buses 10 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Can anyone on here clarify whether I need a PCV to do this? I did speak to a plated taxi locally that was a 9 seater short wheelbase Renault Trafic. I asked him if he had a PCV. He said no, he was driving on a car licence. Which has caused the confusion.
  • Renaut grand espace 2002 2.2dci - Engine fault 13 Dec 2011 (Forum)
The knocking noise is very loud and there is a complete loss of power. Took it to a local garage who looked at it but couldn't resolve problem. Took it to Renault who looked at it and couldnt diagnose problem.(fleeced me out of nearly £400) Want a further 10hrs labour to remove head and inspect it. Told them not to bother and drove it home. Engine still starts fine doesn't seem to misfire now but is noisy and low on power.
  • Which used lorry? 30 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Some swear by DAF and MAN, some say Mercedes (but parts are expensive apparently.  Have also been advised to steer clear of Ford/ Iveco, Renault and Volvo, but unsure whether there is any real basis to that or just personal bias. Basically looking for something reliable that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix if it goes wrong.  (Yes, I know all lorries can be dear to fix, but I imagine some are better than others).
  • Second car 27 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Less is better, but if im just to end up spending more running a car its not worth it in my opinion. The cars i have been looking at include Renault Meganes with 70k miles 1.5D models and Citroen C4 HDI for under 4k. (autoquake) and from a local garage a 55 plate Vauxhal Astra 1.3 CTDi life 55k miles for just over £4k. Should i be looking at these or smaller petrol cars?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 2.0 Diesel DPF and driving modern diesels 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
They seem to cause no end of expensive problems. As my next car will probably be a diesel I need some advice. Looking at 1.6 to 2l diesel- Renault clio, Puegot 207, Ford Focus or similar. I would go for the BMW 318 or 320 D but too expensive for my cash purchase. I only do about 15k/annum and I think I may be better off with Petrol. Do they/the car tell you when you NEED to regenerate the DPF, or do you need a regular Italian tune up, which defeats the purpose somewhat.
  • Cars which were common three years ago - now rare 21 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Nissan Almera MK1 - Rust is killing these fast, only a few very late examples seem to survive. Nissan Primera MK1 - Mostly have now vanished Renault 19 - I don't remember the last time I saw one of these, it was a very long time ago. Any other examples?
  • Used choice for horse-woman 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
As she owns a horse the car needs to be able to take two or three large bails of sawdust in the boot/ with the rear seats down. The only car she has seen so far that takes her fancy is the 2006 mk3 Renault clio, I heard some of mk3 clios use Nissan engines now, is this true? Are there any issues to worry about with these? Also any other recommendations for suitable replacements would be appreciated.
  • Peugeot 4007 (2007 - ) - Anybody seen one? 13 Feb 2009 (Forum)
There will always be the small cars, I suppose - for those with feet small enough to select a pedal rather than pressing all three - but the 308, 407 and 4007 are so gobsmackingly ugly they would have to be (a) utterly fantastic or (b) free to attract customers away from Ford or VW. There's another thread here criticizing Renault's design direction, but I think Peugeot has a much worse problem - don't you?
  • Cars used by rental firms - UK, France, Germany 29 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Observations: 1) When I hire a car in France, using Europcar, and choosing the cheapest category, I always seem to get a Renault Clio. (When I use Budget, it is a lot more unpredictable.) 2) I recently hired a car at a UK airport - Europcar, cheapest category - and got a Peugeot 308 (an upgrade!). There seemed to be rather a lot of Peugeots at Europcar at that airport. 3) It often seems to me that in this country, each year one or two models will be particularly popular with rental firms, probably because the special deals from the manufacturers.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.3 Heavy steering 27 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Great car not a mark on it, engine good but the steering is very heavy. There is no powered steering.I have driven a Renault trafic with no powered steering and fully ladened it was not as heavy as this fiesta. The steering seems to get heavier the more the lock is turned but as you start to straighten up after a bend or corner the stering wheel almost jumps out of your hand as it straightens up the steering.
  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - Vauxhall automatics - any specific issues? 29 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I am urgently searching for an automatic car so am constrained by what is available used and locally. Initially looked at Renault as I like their cars but very few around locally and I am aware the older autos are not the most reliable - saw a Clio 1.6 auto 2002 52 plate with 20000 miles. Have however just driven and like an 56 plate Vauxhall Astra SRi 1.8 auto and am very close to buying.
  • 1st baby on the way, £3.5k to spend - suggestions? 31 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The in laws have retired to the south of France - we're in Aberdeen, so a car that could handle THAT journey would be great - but to be honest it might be just way too far to drive. So far I have been looking at Volvo V40's (with high mileage), Citroen Picasso (seem pricey), Renault Scenic (not seen any in our price bracket), Skoda Fabia Estate (top end of budget). I'm open to any and all ideas really ... what car, what age, what to look out for? Your thoughts appreciated.
  • Tyres and fashion 29 Mar 2007 (Forum)
BTW, my elderly neighbour is trying (maybe successfully...) to sell me his ancient but low mileage Renault 4 van, fitted with original pattern Michelin Xs!
  • New Ford Chief Exec 6 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Carly Fiorina didn't sort HP but it's back on track now since she got fired. Anyway next major Ford headline IMHO is a tie-up with Renault/Nissan I suspect... before GM do it. Rob
  • The girlfriends wonderful mind 17 Jul 2006 (Forum)
sher recently had to have new discs, pads, tyres and tracking costing around £300 and the poor girl was devastaded at having to spend that out and not being able to get a new pair of shoes or something new to wear. so this is why i am astounded at the way she drives her car around. she takes speed humps at about 50mph, and wonders why i get mad explaining that new supension aint cheap. her car is diesel and starts it straight up with out waiting for the dash lights to go off, then wonders why it sometimes dont start first time. when i question her on this her reply was "the man at renault didnt tell me what to do" i am constaly filling up her washer fluid (not leaking she just loves using it) and washing it. are all women like this even after we try to point them in the right direction, even my sisters are like this.
