Cars which were common three years ago - now rare - Rattle
Some examples of my top of my head:-

Ford Escort these are sadly fast dissapearing off the roads
Mondeo MK1 - Again as above now quite rare.
Fiesta MK3 - Two years ago they seemed about the most common car on the road, I still see a lot of them much less than I used to, I reckon in 2-3 years time they will be very rare.

Citroen ZX - Never a fanastic seller but now very hard to find.

Fiat Uno - Very rare now

Skoda Felicia - Rust has killed most of them.

Nissan Almera MK1 - Rust is killing these fast, only a few very late examples seem to survive.

Nissan Primera MK1 - Mostly have now vanished

Renault 19 - I don't remember the last time I saw one of these, it was a very long time ago.

Any other examples?

Vauxhall Carltons/Senators - doesn't seem that long ago they were quite common, but not now.

Peugeot 406's

Volvos to me seem rarer than 10 years ago. the mass of estate volvos seems much of a minority thing...presume the school run mum now has more choice.

what seems rare is a type of person driving say a Micra or a fiesta 4 door with alot of people inside....I've not seen a small car driven 4 up for a long time. have they all bought something bigger?

I've been all over the place with four people in my 1.2 Corsa :). My dads Fiesta often has four people in it too.

Cartons and Omegas are now extremely rare. 406 estates are common near me but saloons now very rare. I think this is because the estate was made after the saloon had finished I think.

With the exception of the R19, the cars mentioned can be seen here. Of course we have a mixed rural/urban community so changing cars is only done by some of the population when their current car goes to the scrap yard.

Mark 1 Fiesta in restored condition about 900 metres away, followed a 1981 Cortina on Friday and an Austin 1100 today..all in regualr daily use.

Next door neighbour runs a 1985 Mercedes 300SE, and a local has just bought a nice 1984 Escort convertible. Lots of old Minis around,1968 VW Caravannette - restored- yesterday..

Still at least two ZX in this large Northants village, both in daily use. Several Escorts of the later marks but most of the others are becoming rare.

Dunno about the Almeras, there seem to be plenty around here. Perhaps I notice them more because I've got one.

Certainly agree about Citroens and also there seem to be far fewer Volvo 300s than there used to be.

Sierras. Considering they only went out of production in the mid 90s I can't believe that they've disappeared off the face of the earth already. You can regularly see other makes of car which are much older, but I don't know the last time I saw a Sierra, even a later version, let alone an original jellymould

Talking of Sierra's, saw a showroom condition XR4i hatch today in bright red, the stink when we followed it for literally 20 yards on a roundabout brought a swift reminder of just how bad overfuelling or worn petrols could smell.

As production ended in '93 they are at least 16 years old now, mine is nearly 20.Low value and high scrap prices saw a lot of them off, mine cost £30 to save it from the scrapyard 10 years ago,it was valued at £400 last year by the insurance co. that paid out after a Mercedes ran into the back of it (economic write off due to a slight bend in the x member behind the bumper).Of the few I see about most seem to be estates,I regularly see a tidy '83 example, also the odd P100.

Agree about Carltons, seen a couple this week, but now so rare I notice them IYSWIM, same with Senators. Still a fair amount of Omegas around, although the pre facelifts are now getting fewer, when I was looking for a 2 litre manaul 'box one a couple of months back there were very very few available. Cavalier mk3s seem to be going fast as well.

Can't remember the stats exactly but it was something along the lines of 80% of all 10 year old cars are still in daily use but by the time they hit 14 years only 20 or 30% are still on the road.

I've noticed a lot less nice E36 3 Series on the road, only a few tatty ones seem to remain around here.

Scrappage is to blame to a certain extent...one of our lads delivered a mint one owner 318i 35K miler to be crushed some weeks ago, criminal the waste whilst real heaps of rusting rubbish still in use.

Two thirds of Rattle's list describes the automotive content of my work carpark! It has:

Ford Escort - 1x M reg , 1 x R reg
Mondeo MK1 - 1 x N reg
Fiesta MK3 - 1 x N reg
Citroen ZX - 1 x N reg
Fiat Uno - nope
Skoda Felicia - 1 x P reg
Nissan Almera MK1 - nope
Nissan Primera MK1 - 1 x N reg
Renault 19 - nope

Within the last year there have also been:

Volvo V40 - R reg
Alfa Romeo 155 - N reg
Fiesta Mk3 - L reg
Rover Metro - irish reg but c.1994
VW Golf - L reg

If someone bombed the car park tomorrow I don't suppose the replacement cost would hit four figures.

>>Peugeot 406's>>

Plenty of 405 and 406 Pugs around my area...:-)

Same with Volvos and Saabs - daylight running lights virtually everywhere you look.

Lol I see several L reg MK3 Fiestas daily. It was just only two years ago it seemed 1/3 cars round here was a Mk3 Fiesta now its more like in 20.

For some reason small Fords are loved here but Escorts are now mostly rotten and hence scrapped.
Cars which were common three years ago - now rare - L'escargot
It's not surprising when you consider that the average lifespan of a car in the UK is 14 years.
Cars which were common three years ago - now rare - redviper
The Mk1 Renault Laguna - I used to see loads of them about, hardly see them now, - I harldy see the Facelifted version though
Cars which were common three years ago - now rare - Falkirk Bairn
How many / few Granadas are there now.?

I have seen 1 in the last 6 months IIRC - the droopy eyed version - looked OK bodywise so what killed them of.

Got a lift in a K Reg Sierra the other day - he has it for nostalgia reasons - in the same family 17 years - it goes, not very fast and the smell of petrol is everywhere. The cambelt failed last year but luckily a couple of valves were the only casualties.
