Ford Mondeo (1996 - 2000)
1.8 LX (A/C)
Awesomely reliable member of the family!
I can honestly say the old Mk2 Mondeo is a superb car, I've covered 36000 miles now, and I can honestly say it's twice the car that the C-class it replaced was.
Nice and roomy inside, the only downside of the cabin is slightly flimsy feeling heater controls and the seats are starting to look a bit grubby, but It's comfy enough to drive 500 miles in a day without any worries at all. Handling is good although the suspension is feeling a little tired at 136000 miles, the front springs both broke with 110k on the clock.
I got a stone through the radiator, and took the chance to replace the corroded aircon condensor, ever since, the aircon has been terriffic, superb on the rare sunny day we have.
The brake discs all needed replaced, and after 10000 miles, replaced again after the car was lying for a few months because they corroded so badly, brake travel is quite long, but it's not a big problem.
The infamous Mondeo clutch was replaced, but it wasn't the enormous job that some people talk about, luckily I know the local Mondeo expert so it was fixed easily enough.
The coil pack has been replaced twice, a 10 minute job, but apart from that there have been zero mechanical problems.
I have a strange whistling noise sometimes, like an air leak, but I can't find it.
Economy is ok, about 35mpg average, it's disappointing around town, but reasonable on a long run, in fact, the motorway is where the Mondeo excels, it just runs along happily, cruise control would be a bonus.
All in all, it's a superb car, I really love it, and I can't see me replacing it any time soon.
Recommend it to a friend? He was the one who recommended it to me, he had 2 of them!
