I don't think any modern cars are as reliable as those made in the '90s, I am used to diesels doing 200-300,000 miles but not many of the modern cars seem to be capable of that.
A good place to do some research is ebay, look at what is for sale in your range and see if there are many very high milers for sale, that tells you something about there durability.
I have studiously avoided a common rail diesels until now, it seems that some are good but you need to do your research. I have just bought a 110 Hdi Peugeot 406 estate with over 180,000k miles on it and am delighted with it, 50 mpg locally and everything works and generally in very good condition, only £125 road tax, all for less than £1,000. There were two for sale while I was looking with over 300k on them - that sounds like a good advert to me.
