Mondeo Passat - Passat Vs Mondeo ? - bk.bas
The more I read about Mondeo TDCi the more it seems that they are not very relaible and have many inherant faults that are expensive to fix. I have had a 20V 1.8 Passat for the last 11 years which has given me pretty trouble free motoring at virtually no cost (I do all my own servicing) but it now needs more money spending on it than is worth spending. My questions are then this. Which is going to be the most reliable and cheapest to run in the long term:

New shape Passat Tdi (around 06)
Mondeo Mk3 TDCi (05-06 era)
New Shape Mondeo Tdci140 (07)

Originally I was looking to spend around £4k on the Mondeo but am now thinking it might be going to around £6k which will buy me either of the other 2 (at around trade price)

Real life experience answers would be good

Owned neither sorry im a vauxhall man so the Vectra c is my choice.

But when buying i only go for the lower mileage motors at the right price with the service history to back it up, A lad here at work owns a 2007 passat estate 170 bhp diesel and he likes it had a few problems from new but all got fixed but it does use some oil.

I guess you will be looking at cars with 60k plus so as your doing your own maintennace won't the auction be a better place to start you may get a newer model for your cash?

I don't think any modern cars are as reliable as those made in the '90s, I am used to diesels doing 200-300,000 miles but not many of the modern cars seem to be capable of that.

A good place to do some research is ebay, look at what is for sale in your range and see if there are many very high milers for sale, that tells you something about there durability.

I have studiously avoided a common rail diesels until now, it seems that some are good but you need to do your research. I have just bought a 110 Hdi Peugeot 406 estate with over 180,000k miles on it and am delighted with it, 50 mpg locally and everything works and generally in very good condition, only £125 road tax, all for less than £1,000. There were two for sale while I was looking with over 300k on them - that sounds like a good advert to me.

I suggest you look at the speedo in some taxis or hire cabs or look at some of the cars going through auctions, cars today have never been so reliable .The reliability is born out buy many reports from the AA,RAC,ADAC etc.You then go onto say you have bought a HDi with 180k on the clock and it is perfect come on you cannot have it both ways.

I have had both Mondeo and Passat's, 3 passats actually and have to say that whilst i didn't like the quirks of the DSG box the fuel economey and comfort and pulling power of the 140bhp passat was very good.
The passats were brilliant for economey and the DSG model I could get 58 on a run which was astounding, the manual ones i used to get 44-52.
I has two estate models and they were very versatile.
reliability wasn't bad for the mileage, I would do anything from 600-700 miles per day so bits did wear out.
Passat for me over Mondeo, but if I used it to tow my caravan then it would of been the Ford! The ford had the feeling of being less fragile shall we say.
The passat just wasn't pretty but 10/10 for practacality
