Nissan Micras with reverse parking sensors. What's that all about then?
Perhaps because the drivers have the inability to use the rear view mirror,an audible warning of traffic behind was deemed necessary.
For second cars?
If you're used to a parking sensor on your main car, it's a pain when the second car doesn't have one.
It's a Nissan Micra. It's minute. If you need parking sensors to park one you should turn up the DVLA and hand your license in!!!!
Correct. If you can't park one of these then you shouldn't be driving.........except...........
What about if you are able to drive, but suffer from limited body flexibility that only permits you to drive facing forwards (i.e. you can't twist your body around to reverse) and can therefore only use mirrors to reverse. Its quite handy having the sensors then.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Ah, the serious answer.
It was a tongue in cheek post you know!
There must be a lot of drivers that have restricted neck mobility (because of arthritis etc.) and who have difficulty in turning their head to look rearwards when reversing. They will likely be mainly elderly people to whom a small car such as the Micra might appeal. In this situation a reversing sensor would no doubt be welcome. Having restricted neck mobility does not mean you should give up driving.

I would have thought anything which helps you do a better job of manoeuvring and driving was worth its salt.

"I would have thought anything which helps you do a better job of manoeuvring and driving was worth its salt."
What an extraordinarily mature and sensible post. Someone with sensors on their Micra is unlikely to bump into me or my car.
Surely its a good idea on any car, mine doesn't have them but i'd probably use them even though i am capable of parking, why have go at something that makes your life easier!? Did people moan when PAS became almost common place or what about servo assisted brakes? I think its especially useful when parking space are becoming tighter and cities more crowded making parking much more difficult for everyone.
A Micra is all about convenience, and chances are it'll spend most of its life popping in and out of urban parking spaces. So if parking sensors make that job any easier, they are probably much more use on a Micra than on a bigger car. The big car is more likely to spend more of its time on the open road, where the sensors are less useful.
The same logic explains why power steering was so popular when introduced on Micras, and why these features get a higher priority in marketing that sort of car than do things like CD changers and seats covered in cowhide.

points taken!
A lot of Micras are bought by the blue rinse brigade, maybe they appreciate having that little extra help when parking? The primera also comes with that cool rear view camera, that could be useful.
Nice try pdc - I laughed mate. :-)
Rear parking sensors might well find their way onto all cars in future, like power assisted steering has.
Re: Nissan Micras - one of the great mysteries of our roads today. Why is Rover in deep water partly because its image while loads of people are happy to be seen driving the latest Nissan Micra Noddy cars?

Because of its shape you won't see rear end of the car in side mirrors, in fact you can only see as far as curved widest point on passenger door. Despite Micra being tiny car, it's all bubbly and so edges of rear bumper are sticking out about 30 cm further than view via rear window would suggest. Most men would simply adjust and recalculate, ladies however....
It's a little known fact that the old Micra had a parking sensor.
When you were a safe distance from an obstruction, the car made a "brm brm" noise. When you were too close, it made a "crunch" noise.
They just managed to improve its range for the new version, that's all...
Nothing new about back-up sensors. The first time I encountered them was in Malaysia on holiday c. 1988 on that Proton model which was based on the Mits Colt of the era. Damn useful.
