Has anybody noticed that lots of recent yellow rear numberplates have started developing black stain like marks on them? Is it poor quality manufacture or some terrible disease. It really spoils the look of the back of a new car.
Numberplate Disease - El Hacko
yes, almost like something "running" and producing a fuzzy effect.. perhaps due to the yellow?
Numberplate Disease - smokie
I'd assumed this was due to application of one of those snake oil coatings which claim to obscure the plate to cameras.

From the one's I've seen I would say it is purly down to poor manufacturing of the plates. Although there is another favorite around my way where the protective film is not removed, therfore after a while water gets behind it making it look a complete mess.
Numberplate Disease - patently
What? Some weird defect that makes the plate unreadable? And its not my fault?

Where can I get one?
Numberplate Disease - BazzaBear {P}
It appears to me to be water getting behind either a protective film, or the top layer of the plate.
Numberplate Disease - patently
Some kind of syringe called for, then?
Numberplate Disease - robZilla
If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, this is most often seen around the screw holes in the plate. I always thought water and other assorted crud was finding it's way in between the plastic plate and the white or yellow backing, via the holes.

Thanks, geoffster. I've been meaning to ask the same question for some time!
Numberplate Disease - El Hacko
so, question is: at what stage does such a "diseased" plate (distance to be readable) become illegal?
Numberplate Disease - J Bonington Jagworth
Making numberplates (especially in the old black-and-white days) used to be a fairly specialised process. Now anyone with some stick-on letters and a mangle can make them, they are rather less permanent...

I'd like some in that material used to amuse children that shows different images depending on the viewing angle!

Yes please - when viewed from directly behind it shows my number but from above and to the left shows my neighbour's...

(provided that only I have access to the technology concerned, of course...)

patently, I think you've missed part of the equation here: you'd not just need the same plates, you'd need the same type of car.

Which would you prefer: to buy a real car for yourself, or pay for the neighbour to get one with the engine in the boot? ;-)
Numberplate Disease - NARU
My (4-year old) rear numberplate just failed the MOT - it had started to delaminate as described. Definately not the result of any treatment by me (and I'd had the car from new).
Numberplate Disease - robZilla
Don't these ANPR-enabled cameras just read the registration and send out a NIP? They can't tell what type of car it is can they?
Numberplate Disease - patently
No, I'm right ;-)

From behind I would want it to look right - then if plod should check, all looks kosher.

If photographed from a box above and to my left, I want a different number to show. Letter then goes to my neighbour who will have no problem showing that it wasn't them because the photo* will be of a BMW or a Porsche instead of an Audi. I'm not that cruel!

By then, of course, they know that a car was caught and that it wasn't my neighbour, but they don't know whose it was....

-----------------------
*assuming the SCP allow them to see the photo, of course!

So Mr Plod comes out to check the address to which the plate was registered. There he is told "no, my car's an Audi", and shown the document. As a parting aside, relived Audiman adds "My neighbour has one of those horrid Porch things, but I couldn't take the stigma of being seen in one".

So on the way out, a curious Mr Plod takes a peek over the fence* at neighbour's Porch, which he sees from an angle ... and after a quick call to the station to check the law on misrepresentation, he reaches for his cuffs and sets off to ask our hero to assist him with some enquiries ...

Ah well. Looks like

Hmm, cunning ruses to foil the long arm of the law. Mind you, the officer might just knock on the door and ask to take a peep.

Not before you've jumped off the suspension bridge, climbed the front of Buck Pal, and delivered the Milk Tray ...

That would be a laugh. Warrant please?

Which one are you trapped helplessly beneath? I'll be there in a twinkling of an eye..... ;-)

Buck house is a problem. I'd need the cape and a mask before climbing it. Did you hear the lovely quip on the radio the day after? "Late news - the invisible man has scaled Windsor Castle..."

Trapped I do all too often, helpless I haven't practiced much, but I might make an exception :)

It was all sounding rather tempting under I realised that it might involve the porch with the twinkly-eyed plate

Just booking this backroom does fine ... :)

The main reason for this problem is incorrect drilling of the plate. They must be drilled from the back at an extremely slow speed - an old fashioned hand drill or battery drill set at the lowest speed possible. A pilot hole should be drilled first and then work up to the required size hole. If the plate is drilled from the front the backing is ripped away from the plastic and water eventually gets in. Better still, don't drill them at all, use sticky pads but I'm not sure how long they last before the plate drops off!

Has anyone noticed rear plates that are orangy-red? I'm seeing more of these as well. What's that all about?

I think it's just that they still have the red protective film on the front.
