We have a 1986 nissan cherry with 41000 miles on it the car is mint, but today we went to go out in the car but when you put the car into gear evan reverse you get a grinding noise and no movement at all.
Any ideas !!!!!!!

Sounds like a bent gear selector fork to me, the grinding coming from teeth on cogs not meshing properly...
You must have the last remaining DATSUN Cherry left on the planet...

can you actually get into gear ok.or do you mean trying to get into gear.if the later may be clutch.if you can get into gear does it do it in 4th or 5th?

You can put it in any gear and you get a grinding noise but the car does not move.

sorry stuarth made a big mistake there.I reckon diff has gone.why I said clutch I dont know.

Have had a look under the car today, and have found the n/s outer driveshaft has snapped in half.

At least that is cheaper to repair than a diff.
