Please somebody reply :-)

I am having the exact same issue. ...

Statistical outlier

As some will know, I'm currently selling a car. I've been surprised at how little interest there has been so far (although this is the first weekend it's been up for sale), especially as we thought that we were pricing to sell.

I got a Glass's guide price for the car, indicating £2,330 as a private sale price. Even at £1,995 I've only had a couple of calls, and there they were looking for serious discounts.

Is this sort of disconnect between guide price and reality normal? I'm a bit sore about having paid for a guide price that seems to be so far out, although it will make for a good lever to avoid dropping lower if I get someone interested.

Also, any tips? It's in Autotrader (print and online), has a fresh service and 12 months MOT. What else should I be doing? Read more

Quick update. It's all gone rather well. Sold for the £1,995 asking price to a nice family as a first car for 18 year old daughter. Bit of a result, should hopefully be a good car for her.

Cheers for the advice all.

Noise is a virtually constant "Thrumm" "Thrumm" in a low pitch, (Not a high pitched squeal) in time with revolution of wheels.

Most apparent on overrun in second especially when engine is warm, but is "there" at all speeds and in all forward gears.

Recent Main dealer workshop checks exclude Brakes, H/brake ( acting on front wheels),Bearings, suspension, drive shaft. ( visual and external examination only) No oil / fluid leaks apparent. Gear changing is not affected and AFAIK, there is no apparent wear of clutch friction plates.

Suspicion has fallen on the clutch / flywheel, internal thrust bearings et al., as this was replaced in its entirety under warranty in Mar '08. (Very little is known as to WHY this work was carried out, all I complained about was a noise when in 2nd / 3rd gears.

Noise disappears completely if the clutch pedal is depressed at any speed and in any gear, to return when clutch is let out again and the vehicle is being powered normally.

Car is booked into M/Dealer for a repair later this month, would I have any chance of appealing to Citroen for a partial refund citing just 20,000 miles since replement of components?

Any advice or best guesses would be gratefully received Read more

I have a 99 focus 1.8 petrol and its driving me nuts.

It has developed a high idle at normal driving temperature, it used to idle aroung 800rpm but is now up to 1000 rpm. The revs also surge when i stop at lights/traffic etc.

For example if i am going 40 mph and stop at lights dip the clutch or flick into neutral the revs will rise to about 2000 rpm and after a few seconds settle down at 1000 rpm.

I have put a new iac valve and speed sensor in the car but the car still surges.

I have had a vacuum hose replaced recently by a mechanic who said that the old one had collapsed, when he was installing it he pulled away and took it to the boss of the garage and seemed to show him something, is there a chance that the hose was the wrong type?

I have also been told that it could be something to do with the pcv hose/valve.

Anyone have any ideas to what this could be?

It sounds a lot like the throttle position sensor. I had the same problem with mine.

It shouldn't be too difficult to get a garage to replace it for you. Alternatively it's not a difficult job to do yourself. Its at the top of the engine bay (follow the throttle cable) and is held on with two hex screws.

I suppose if you're going to overtake, you're going to overtake, but this must have been a trifle disconcerting.

The real challenge is to work out what does the overtaking I think!

Safe for work, and runs about ten seconds. Blink and you miss it.

Passing the time away at work, I have often found myself in fits of laughter at hilariously bad car interiors.
I ask you, the good people out there, to please share some particularly abysmal examples (pictorial evidence greatly welcomed)...

Remember this from the mk2 Astra GTE in the 80's?

I seem to remember the mileometer and tripmeter on those things were mechanical rather than than electronic. Vauxhall simply replaced the traditionally stylised numbers with numbers in the shape of 7 segment LEDs.

One of the most notable new features of the new Astra would appear to be its rear suspension

Doesn't the latest Astra share its platform with the Chevrolet Cruze?

Does that mean the Cruze also has similar rear suspension with a Watts Linkage?

Apart perhaps from its slightly overdone front end, the Cruze is also quite bold and modern -looking. HJ reckons it is "a really good-looking car" and rates it decently.
(and yes it's a saloon, but there's a hatch coming)

I know it's a dangerous thing to compare LIST prices (especially with the availability of the likes of 12 month-old Astras at supermarket sites), but the cheapest Astra is £15675 for a 1.4 with 87 bhp.
The cheapest Cruze is £11,995 for a 1.6 with 113 bhp and 3 years' servicing included.

Was even only £11,495 during the launch offer.
Seems a surprisingly large amount of car when you consider the list price of the lowliest spec and engined 3-door Fiesta is about £10,800.

(And if the Aveo is anything to go by, it might start showing up at supermarket sites before too long too)

Might even have a temperature gauge (?)

I've noticed a growing trend recently of pedestrians with their players on and completely oblivious to anything around them, especially when crossing the road... I have to turn into a side road near work to get into our car park and if a pedestrian is anywhere near the junction and heading that way I now sound my horn... I do get some glares but after having nearly caught a couple in the past I'm not taking the risk any more...

As an aside, but on the same basis, we've noticed on the trains that we have the same problem... they have their earphones on and can't hear a thing... one of these days there will be an emergency and they won't hear the evacuation message... doesn't bear thinking about! Read more

It was my misfortune to have to drive through London on Wednesday. I don't need to do it very often, but have got used to the congestion charging zone free route that takes you round the back of Buck house and Victoria.

I noticed the large, temporary, matrix displays warning of congestion around Victoria when I got to Grosvenor place, but by then it's too late to change your route if you want to avoid the congestion charge.

It wasn't until I got to the end of Bressenden place that I saw the first sign banning a right turn, forcing me into Victoria street and the congestion charging zone. I assumed charging would be waived because of the roadworks. My passenger directed me round the back of Westminster cathedral and onto Vauxhall bridge road.

Later that evening I looked up the TFL website www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/congestioncharging/12602....x that showed a free route. At no time did I see the diversion signs mentioned.

I thought I'd better pay the fee to avoid a penalty, but wondered if I would have been 'picked up' on that route.

What chance do you reckon of obtaining my money back from BT open reach (the perpetrators of the road works), or TFL for inadequate signage? Read more

FallingDown

You are not the only one caught up in this mess that is generating PCN's that should never have been issued. Your dispute is with TFL congestion charging. There are several large signs en route saying that you won't be charged if you follow the diversion route, and it is noted on the site. However people are being charged when the cameras should have been turned off. See
forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=258...3.
If you followed the diversion signs exactly then appeal. If you have already paid you'll have to take your chances. If you diverted from the route then you'll have to pay.

Other than in BMW/Mercedes, orthopedic seats at a swinging price.
Plus i am firmly convinced that too many car designers are now designing cars for WOMEN with short legs therefore a short seat squab.
which leaves a goodly portion of my legs unsupported
plus why is Volvo about the only manufacturer to recognise that the seat squab need to be tiltable, fore & aft as well as height adjustable

Me I still got a good old fashioned big bottomed businessmans seat out of an old Vauxhall Carlton, this bolt into an old 4wd.
but man it's still a quare proper comfy seat
