I received a letter today asking me to send back my ins cert for a policy I cancelled.
The letter is dated 2nd Oct and says that in accordance with Road Traffic Act, I am required to return the cert within 7 days, but I only received the letter today ( 10th) and it wasnt mentioned when I cancelled policy.
Should I be worried or just send it back tomorrow first class mail? Should I ring them and just confirm its not a problem? Read more
I've been having some issues with the harshness of my car's engine between 3000 & 3700 RPM. It normally only happens when the car is warm & I am accelerating. When first reported to my local dealer, they said it was a lifter problem & replaced the hydraulic lifters under warranty. However, this didn't resolve the issue. They then told me it was a characteristic of that engine. I referred it to another dealer who said that the car had the wrong oil in it, though it was correct as per the handbook. They said that Vauxhall now recommended the 5/20 for the Turbo engines. However, this change has been no difference either. Anyone else had a problem like this?

5W/20? That's a new one. There isn't a 5W/20 Vx oil available. I think every new Vx runs on their 5W/30. That said a minor change in oil viscosity is very unlikely to cause the problem.

I've just come across a heavy duty 12v air compressor from tescos. From the photos it appears to better made than the usual el cheapo rubbish from argos. Its £20 and the specs say it can do 150psi and 35ltr/min.

has anyone got one of these?
Or, can anyone comment on the specs, compared to other similar products?
For £20 it looks like a good buy to me. Read more
"you haven't commented on whether it's any good at the job? "
yes it is - I have a car on SORN sitting on the drive with a slow puncture in two tyres. If I let the tyres go flat it 'looks' bad so every week or so I pump them up - my Woolies compressor is ideal for this.
Just read that Daimler is reportedly in talks with FIAT about a cooperation to develop the next generation A and B class.
I guess you could say no real surprise there as FIAT are excellent at the small stuff. Just hope it's not another Alfa Arna with, this time, German design flair and Italian electrics :)
Whatever next ? Daimler talk to Renault about fixing the R Class ??? Read more
The electrics in my FIAT are made by Bosch ;-)
Hi all, Please help me out with this. I have been asked to pick up some furniture in my L200 pickup. I can work out the cost of fuel and my time easily, but is there a rate per mile I should be charging to cover fuel, wear&tear, depreciation/use of vehicle etc? This is not my usual line of work, so I'm in the dark here. Yours views?. Thanks, Johnny Read more
Don't forget the fuel to get you to the job, and back from the delivery point.
I have a bit of an obssession with tyres, after all they are pretty much the most safety orientated component on your car. Well, My Panda 4x4 has worn out its Bridgestone Duelers after 24,000 miles. They have gripped quite well but I want to see if another make of tyre will be better.
I need all season tyres marked M+S (no, not Marks and Spencer) to give a bit of 4x4 credibility. I have chosen Hankook Centum H720's from mytyres, based on the reviews that the website provides. They are a good looking uni-directional tyre so handling may even improve in adverse conditions. Fitted locally they will work out at £42.20 a corner which seems quite fair.
I suspect that Panda 4x4 owners up to now have just gone for OEM tyres so I will update you on the progress of the Hankooks if you are interested, or even if you are not. Read more
OK, here's another update since I had a run out to Wolsingham from Sunderland this evening, dry roads on the way out, wet on the way back. Now, this run involves some boring dual carriageway but also some demanding unlit country roads with lots of ups and downs and tricky corners.
The new Hankooks performed really well in both the wet and dry and I felt very safe. Fuel economy, maybe a bit better than with the Bridgestones and performance felt enhanced, bearing out my theory of reduced rolling resistance.
So, only snow performance and wear rate to report on now. Could be a while before that happens.
However, all you boring Panda 4x4 owners refitting Bridgestones when the old ones wear out, get out and try some sexy new rubbers!
Hello all,
The son has left his pick-up with me whilst he is on holiday. Its the 2.5 diesel turbo. Whilst driving from the airport I noticed that the engine temperature gauge is not working, the needle does not move at all. I am keeping an eye on the coolant level just in case. Is this a common problem and easily rectified or am I looking at possibly a new sender or a new gauge? How do I determine what is at fault? It would be nice to solve this for the son before his return.
Many thanks for your responses.

The temp sensor wire if you put it to earth does the temp gauge sweep over to hot nice and easy? if yes then id replace the temp sensor for a start, you could try cleaning the contacts etc.
if not then maybe the gauge is faulty or a loose connection on gauge?
Hi I'm new to this site so I hope I've replied to the thread, anyway have just bought a 306HDI estate (2000) have done 600 miles in it then suddenly every so often it won't go over 230rpm If I floor it about a second later it moves over this threshold until the next gear change, then I have the same problem in that gear too. I've also noticed that in traffic jams the idle moves up fro 900rpm to 1100rpm when at the higher rpm that's when the previous problem occurs, when at 900rpm no problems at all. Up to now I've had no warning light or anything. Is this just the fuel filter or something much worse? any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Ok will get it booked in.
Thanks for your help, will keep you posted about the fault if I get to the bottom of it.
Thanks again for all your advice

Just re-read it - its a very fair and balanced bit of Justice. Lot for
this Country to learn from.
I agree with you PU that it would indeed be unfair for people employed in the production of the show to suffer but surely Mr. Sutherland would do well to remember that before drinking and driving.
I'm no pious, do what I say type, but surely on his income he could afford a taxi or a driver knowing that DUI is an offence ?
I do not even pretend to understand how the law works but if he was caught over the drink drive limit how can he then negotiate to have the second charge dropped bearing in mind he is currently on probabtion for a similar offence in 2004.
Does this mean if someone is caught speeding for a second time they can negotiate to extend the period the points from the first conviction can be extended and forget about the second offence ?
I would have thought DUI was quite serious given what can happen from a seconds misjudgment behind the wheel while under the influence.
Due to ongoing issues with my current car I'm casting around for another. I've seen a nice looking Previa but it has an odd thing about it (no remote engine oil reservoir) Could someone please check this engine number and let me know what it is? 2TZ171nnnn
thanks
ps I've asked this elsewhere but they have a 'number of users online' indicator and I'm the only one there :( Read more
no, there's just a reservoir of about 2 litres of oil in a tank under the bonnet that tops up the engine oil on start up if it's too low. When I first saw it I assumed it was because the engines used oil at a fearsome rate but having owned three over the years I now assume it's a convenience feature due to the mid placed engine.
And don't think that by sending it Special Delivery you'll get better service! Sent some important student loan docs to daughter now at uni in Liverpool. Not delivered today despite the fact that I paid £4.30 for it, but PO have now withdrawn the guarantee for the duration of the strikes.
