Why does HJ always refer to the 2001 Mondeo as a mk2, Ford call it Mk3, everyone else in the world calls it a mk3! Mondeo MK1 was 1992, MK2 1996 and MK3 2001, Mk4 2007. I've owned a Mk2 and a Mk3.
Rant over. (phew)

Hi guys i am new to the forum and would like some advice. I own a 2005 mondeo zetec s 2.0 tdci hatch which i bought from new. The car has done 56000 miles from new and has been fully maintained by my local ford dealer.
A week ago last monday (20th) i started her up after doing a 30 mile motorway run and then i was in a meeting for an hour, so she was still relatively warm and she was spluttering at around 500 rpm, couldnt rev it, smokin very very lump, smelt of diesel, so very quickly turned her off. tried again after and then the same problem again no throttle response etc. Had to get recovery at my expense back to dealers.
So i hired a car as their initial thoughts were fuel contamination, they tried a different tank of derv and she still wouldnt run, then they had to wait for some engine updates and as they not a massive dealership some guy had to come from there main branch.
So this morning he presents me with a cup of green coloured liquid and said its contamination, look at those tiny little particles in the fuel, he said they were going to reprogramme and drain the tank (after they had already done this once). I questioned that the fuel filter was at fault as surely it was its job to stop these black particles reaching the engine, anyway i left him to it and said i would be back at 4 to see what the problem was.
At 3:30 i get a call from the girl on the service desk saying its not good news, the "head is cracked" i asked her what caused this and she basically said driving too fast or long motorway runs, i explained i need my car for business use, therefore it is of no benefit to me to abuse it. Anyway i arrive at 4 and talk straight to the mechanic, who showed me the cracks, i showed the girl from the desk the problem, she said the service manager is coming in the morning to get a fuel sample analysed, i explained this should be under warranty she says talk to this guy tomorrow etc, etc blah blah. So i took a sample of derv from my car just in case things get hairy, i can then get an independant analysis.
Please see the following page forn pics of the damage, i have highlighted the issues in green, let me know what you guys think about this, the car showed no faults before this happened it just came up.

Thanks for any help in advance

Looking at the pics, it's the mouting faces and stud holes for the camshaft retaining caps that have cracked.
There is NO WAY contaminated fuel would cause that.
It is a) a faulty head casting b) bad assembly (over- or undertightening at the factory)
It's a warranty job, no question. Those parts should never fail in service.
My cousin is keen about Kia Ceed, she really likes the looks and wants to buy it sometime next month. I've read Parker's review about it and they've got good things to say about it except depreciation bit but she normally keeps her car for well over 5 years.
HonestJohn hasn't got review about it yet but I wonder if any of you know a thing or two about Kia or in particular about this car. Many Thanks Read more

Hi. Purchase a secondhand Elegance in December. Quite happy, except for tyre size 215/45 R17 on aluminium rims. Expensive, and now the nearside front is wearing rapidly from outside whilst the offside one is wearing evenly.
Got through MOT without comment, despite local tester being very keen on tyre wear, so I can only think he must be accepting the >2mm over >3/4 of tyre width rule.
Anyway, got the thing booked in for 2 new front tyres (Pirellis or Yokohamas I think) when I had the idea of digging out the spare. Imagine my surprise when I dug out the spare to find it absolutely new and unused (but 3 ½ years old, of course).
Had bright idea of putting it on nearside, despite steel rim on spare, but halfway through this operation, discovered it was 205/55 R16. Despite smaller width specification (205 v 215) it seems wider BUT also about an inch taller.
This would help my suspicion that the previous owner put a set of non-standard alloy rims on, but how do I stand legally. Can I put it on as a spare, on the front or back?
(Of course, this makes a mess of my intention to fit spare and one new tyre, and relegating best of front tyres to the spare.)
Also, is it legal to sell a car with a spare you cannot legally use Read more
I take your point, but spares are only used very occasionally, and getting the monster out from under the estate boot is not something I would want to do in the rain on a cold night
Since last Wednesday, or thereabouts, I have had extreme difficulty in accessing this website as in so doing, a window comes up telling me that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close..........etc. etc.
This is most annoying and only happens with HonesJohn's website! I visit maybe a hundred other ones and this never happens. In the last day or so, however, I am having more luck and can, say, access the site about 1 in 5 attempts or sometimes 1 in 3 attempts.
People have told me to use another browser or upgrade from IE 6 to IE7 but I don't want to do this for the sake of ONE website. Perhaps things will improve as there have, apparently, been a lot of changes to this one and anyway this website, in my experience is the only one that gives rise to pop-ups and other nasties.

I will investigate that. It is a virtually brand-new keyboard and mouse, but I will see if I can find anything untoward.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Anyone know if the new Nissan Tiida will be coming to Europe, to replace the Almera?
Just rented one for 10 days and 2100km in South Africa and I give it a big thumbs-up. Not the kind of car I'd ever look at twice normally, and I can't say it's very pretty, but it swallowed luggage and people and went very rapidly for a small petrol engine.
Not sure I'd recommend South Africa for a driving holiday though, some huge distances to cover across pretty dull landscapes, some dangerous roads (dual carriageways but no central reservation or barrier..!) and cops that hide in strange places with radars.... Read more

has anyone removed a radiator from v6 galaxy, Sharan or Alhambra. does it come out from the top or bottom, do i have to disconnect air con. any tips would be very much appreciated Read more
thanks for the replies.
i can't remember seeing any washer on the one i removed from the old rad to put in the new. i was tempted to put some sealant on the thread as i knew it would be difficult to access once i had re-fitted the rad but resisted for the reasons you mentioned. as the old one wasn't leaking i thought it would seal ok.
when i first filled system the coolant was dripping out of the switch. i ran car until fans cut in and then left to cool. coolant dripped steadily at first but started to slow down. there is still a very slight drip and will call vw monday if it persists to see if i can buy a washer/o ring.
I am hoping that the switch is bedding in and will eventually seal itself.
For info HJ has now sorted this.
Regards.
