Mine was a Simca 1100 in the 80's. Oh how they laughed but my £300 gave me sveral years of motoring and it was a doodle to service..wings just bolted on and off etc etc. You could turn it into a van and the dog loved it. Whats yours? Read more
Dear Back Room
I own a 96 2.0 Primera auto saloon . I would like some advice regarding the more recent models.
How does the 1.8 compare to the 2.0?
Are any of later models CVT?. I understand this should be avoided.
I am looking for longevity, reliability and low running costs. I would probably looking for a 4-6 year old auto estate
Where is the best place to look, is this age group too old/risky for auctions.
All advice gratefuly received.
Best wishes
John

I do agree with you there - the older one may have been a bit dull to look at but i could live with an old shape one (especially a GT) but the new one just looks so wrong.
The ministry of transport or whatever they are called now, will be banning HGV drivers for two weeks in the North Shropshire area. The reason for this is that they are breaking the 40mph speed limit on the A41 and A53, both these roads give access to the M54-M6, and are both single carrigeway roads with a 40mph limit for HGV. There speed violations have not been caught by the police or cameras, but by checking of tacho discs. There has been a big crack down by the ministry in this area and more than 200 drivers have been caught by this underhand method. If this system was abopted for car drivers then every single driver in the UK would get a fine.I thought to be given a speeding fine they needed to prove speed, time, (which they can with a tacho) and location. So now this means the traffic conditions will be terrible on these roads as all the trucks do 40mph. The law of HGV speed is so out of date, about 1936 I think, the stopping distance of an HGV now, is better than that of a car in 1936. I am not an HGV driver but my neighbour is, and yes he will be banned for two weeks. Read more
That post P remainds me of a conversation between two people:
Sorry DVD, it wasn't one of my most coherent posts.
(Actually, some would say it was, but there you have it.)
I do agree that if a PSV or HGV driver gets it wrong big time then the effect is rather more serious, so more care does need to be taken. I don't think I suggested otherwise, but if I did...
You story is instructive, but the lesson that I drew was that DVLA needed to sort themselves out and get a grip. The problem highlighted in that tale is DVLA's inaction; hence the solution is to give them a serious kick and sort things out. It can be done; it is a managerial issue.
Too often, the solution is the application or the introduction of another power, rather than fixing the actual problem. Eventually, the system becomes so complex that no-one really understands it and injustices can arise. But, on the other hand, more people are employed so at least the unemployment rate drops.
Hi 'mechies', Mrs V's car is making an odd noise which we can't trace. On braking there is a little squeal from the front wheels which we know is down to pad wear. However on releasing the brakes there is an odd 'squeak' coming fom the rear of the car just as the pedal is fully released. It isn't more noticeable on either side and doesn't appear to be coming from the drums, it only seems to happen when the car is moving and doesn't depend on speed or the force applied to the pedal. Pumping the brake pedal when the car is stationery produces no noise at all.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks as always. Read more
Cheers - will take a look as soon as I have time.
Does anyone know how to bleed the clutch on a V reg Voyager? There doesn't seem to be a bleed nipple on the slave cylinder only a small allen key screw that opens a vent. Can't get any pressure in the system and the pedal goes to the floor. Someone said that the system might have to be pressure bled. Thanks for any advice. Read more
I *always* either pressure or vacuum bleed a clutch. Bleeding by pumping the pedal seldom works on clutches. I hate the 'modern' sealed clutches and those where the slave is with the thrust bearing inside the bellhousing. Horrible design.
My son has looked around and finally decided he would like a Ford Focus 1.8 TDDi Zetec 2001 51 reg with 67k miles.Silver, FSH, sun roof, CD player (multi) but no air con. The car is in good condition apart from a knocking sound under the rear when test driven. The guy who owns the garage that is selling it says that will be sorted. He has a very good reputation locally, is quite elderly and one of 'the old school'which is very pleasant!
It comes with 15 months MOT (the existing 3 months and a full year afterwards) a full service and 3 months warranty and the price is £4,900.
I have tried to get hold of a copy of Glass's guide but no success at Smiths or Waterstones. Could anyone tell me if this is a fair price please and possibly what the guide suggests.
Also are there any problems with this car and what should my son look out for if and before he signs up?
Thanks Read more
I would check theres no trace of a leak from the water pump as this went on mine at an early age (50k,3 years) and cost £180 to fettle.
Having said that, its been a rattly old beast that gets 50mpg on a good day.
The display on my odometer has blanked out, and the problem appears to lie with the speedo head. The only solution is a replacement speedometer.
However, it's an 8-year old car which I intend to 'run into the ground', the speed indication and all other instrumentation is fine, so given the cost of a new speedo I propose to ignore it. I can live without an odometer -- it rarely moves much anyway, now that I'm retired, and service intervals are no problem since I never reach the mileage anyway and service by the calendar.
I wonder, though -- is the odometer an MOT item? The speedometer obviously is, but that's working normally. True, the MOT certificate carries the vehicle's indicated mileage at the time of the test, but can a vehicle be failed for lack of such indication? Since the instrument is not tested at MOT, and anyway the testing station has no idea as to whether the indicated mileage is even true, then I don't see how it can be. Read more
THanks, DVD. it will be interesting to see what they do with the Mileage entry on the certificate.
Are there any special procedures for buying a car in Guernsey and bringing it back onto mainland Britain? Car was originally bought and supplied in England, then sold to buyer in Guernsey, so all necessary UK VAT has been paid on the original purchase. Read more
One thing you may need to watch out for is the fact that they may have parking tickets, congestion charges and other such penalties that are unpaid. I'm not sure how this translates back to the owner when brought back into the UK.
Having lived with a guy from Guernsey who brought his car over here, he knew he wouldn't be chased up on any kind of ticket, so he used to park his car wherever, drive around getting flashed by speed cameras, waltzing in and out of the congestion zone and never received a thing from any of them. So don't know if the car will be 'black listed' or something.
As for driving in Guernsey, the limit on the island is 35 I think, so there's a good chance the cars won't ever have seen 4th or 5th gear (or 6th!).
If you do get one from there - get a full tank of petrol - it's only 50p a litre!
(This is not an invitation to enter into the question as to whether you think that the resulting car might or might not be roadworthy! Though I've no doubt it will soon feature...)
Suggestions for a car, for a £99 budget, that will do a few heavy tows in the short term. I dare say that it will have to come from eBay. It needs a life expectancy of not very long; it needs to pull like a train & it needs, of course, to be roadworthy.

I'm sorted now, £50 got an L reg Granny Ghia with
11 months MOT everything working and a nice set of alloys!
Run it for 3 months haymaking, whack it on Ebay with 8 months MOT left and you should make a tidy profit!
Hi - My 2001 Chrysler Voyager 2.5 CRD is nearly on 120,000 miles (yea i know, i travel a lot) The major service was £385 which did't include a cam belt change. I've been quote £407. I phoned a local motor factor £80.00 for the belt but no listing for a new tensioner etc. I've read an online piece about changing the belt - looks like it could be difficult. I've change cam belts on ford pinto's & vauxhall's V6 before which went ok. Anyone done a voyager CRD 16 valve before. Read more
No, but I'm sure I once looked at one of these engines and it was gear driven. Perhaps your engine is a newer/different design?
Bargain? Never found one yet myself.
The wife buying a succession of Japanese cars from her older sister has had several good deals. She gets them serviced at a local garage for a fraction of main dealer prices. The recent cars have survived as trade-ins or have even been sold to younger family members.
