  • Scrapyards 13 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Besides, it is those who have little understanding of a scrapyard who comment on the supposed eyesore. Definetly a place for the better and to be used more often. My 11 year old stepson had never been to one before and absolutely loved it, all the different badges of the cars were there, he isn't even into cars a huge amount, but he was happy. So when are you going? Blimey reading this I sound like an old bloke, I'm only 30!
  • BMW 3 Series Touring - My 11 year old diesel 3 series touring 26 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I have had it since new, so know all that has happened to it -not much actually.  It was my company car originally then I bought it at 3 year old.  I think I have been lucky. as the only mechanical parts it has needed while I owned it was rear tailgate struts, a leakoff  pipe and a shock absorber, plus one battery and tyres and servicing.
  • Classic cars, bikes older Outboards Chainsaws ETC - Ethanol in Fuel ( by EU Directive ) 11 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Expect more of the same, because E15 (15 per cent ethyl alcohol) received government blessing last year and there’s evidence that even relatively recent cars might find it hard to digest. In the UK, oil companies are coy about saying which petrol contains ethanol, so owners of classic vehicles have to find out the hard way. Many old and not so old vehicles will be unusable without modification (the DfT puts the figure at 8.6 million if E10 is introduced).
  • All cars - Number Plates - 2 Changes a yr which is best? 28 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Had a interesting discussion at the weekend ref number plates and the two plate changes in a year. There was a debate about what looks newer a 18 reg or...
  • Daewoo Lanos - Wheel bearing warrenty 13 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hello there Just before Christmas one of the rear wheel bearings failed on on my car (awful loud grinding noise, not just the humming of a old bearing). That particular bearing had been replaced at the end of July (2015) through the MOT. I had presumed it would be covered under warranty but the garage has told me it isn't and along with the bearing the axle stub joint needed replacing. £170 to fix.
  • I thought insurance dropped at 25! 8 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Ho hum, I have to say I'm a little disappointed, throughout my motoring life I've always told myself that the only good thing about hitting 25 would be that my insurance would drop. Fat chance! It's the same cost this year as it was last year even as a 25 year old and with an extra year's NCB! By the time I've opted to protect my NCB it puts over £100 extra on the premium pushing it up to about £750ish (I only remember car insurance to the nearest £50). So, now that I've discovered this I'm left asking the question, just what on earth is good about being a quarter century old?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Service Intervals ? 26 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Just about to buy an 07 plate Ford Focus 1.6 LX and it was last serviced at 12000 miles at 6 months old. It is now 12 months since this service but only done 5000 additional miles. Should I get it serviced straight away as it is 12 months since last service, or wait until car is 24 months old (or 24000 miles if I reach that first) ?
  • Modern, original fitment exhaust systems 5 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Here's a bit of a positive note for a change. I've been buying new cars on and off since about 1984. Lately, I've been pleasantly surprised by the longevity of the original exhaust sytem. The system on our 5 year old Jazz is still looking as good as new and the system on my 3 year old Panda is still fine.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - Low Oil indicator always lights when Service due 13 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Twice now, the Low Oil indicator has come on days before I take it in for a Service (and about 200 miles since the Service warning stopped telling me in how many miles). Is this model just leaky or is my particular car bad at retaining oil? Is a Dealer likely to find a problem (and hopefully fix it) or do I need to buy a proper car (not at all impressed vs my old Mk4)? Also, PAS 'might' be slighlty stiffer - could this be connected to low/old (long life spec) Oil?
  • Fully Chromed Up PUG SW 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I used to see this old guy in the local high street driving a Lada which was covered in red "go faster stripes" and huge fog lamps on the front. When I say old, I mean he must be in his 70's, trilby hat, tartan blanket on the parcel shelf etc.
  • Which Replacement Radiator Brand ? 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
There are other co's advertising that theirs are OE quality, but of course don't say which brand, so one can't verify this. The car is 13yrs old so I'm not sure if it is worth putting on too expensive things. Have done that on old cars b4 and either something big goes and not worth repairing, or someone hits u and writes it off !!!
  • Causing death by dangerous driving 26 Mar 2007 (Forum)
A 60 year old stepped out in front of his car, and was hit with such force, that he was killed instantly. The driver stopped for a moment, then drove off, up the road for about 1000 yards, before stopping, must have had second thoughts, and then drove back to the scene of the fatality.
  • Oh what to do: What do I buy next? 1 Mar 2007 (Forum)
My only criterion is that it needs to be: a. Diesel. b. Not a run-of-the-mill MPV - so please no Picasso, zafira etc.. c. less than 5years old - company car scheme d. Okay for taking onto building sites - not necessarily 4x4, but not a lowered hot hatch! Budget - hmmm - £10 - £15K Any ideas? ------------------------------------------------ Drive Your Way - If anything can, TerraCan -----
  • RX8 - worth the trouble? 13 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi All, I am looking to buy a second hand car for around £12-13k. I currently own a old 328i coupe so would like something with a bit (lot!) of go. Miles per gallon is not an issue as I only do around 8k per annum, but I do move my dog around a fair bit, so back seats are a necessity.
  • 95 1.8 Diesel Fiesta bad starting 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It turns over fine and will go after about 15-20 secs emmitting a cloud of smoke when it fires up. The car runs fine when warm, no smoke, burns no oil, no noisier than it should be and still returns correct MPG. The new glowplugs have'nt really made any difference. The old old ones did'nt look that bad at all.
  • Polo 1.4 2002- Emission light reset 20 Dec 2004 (Forum)
80-odd year old chap who lives near me called me today. His 2003 Polo 1.4 was running terrible (missing, no power). 'EPC' and 'Emissions' fault lights were on. The car is only a year old and had just been serviced by the VW dealer (25 miles away).
  • Bitter Disappointment... 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
He showed me a stock printout confirming this and blamed a minion who must have confused his fives with his sevens when putting a price display on it. I walked away of course as the car was now only a few grand off the price of a new car, despite being 18 months old. Has this happened to anyone else, and did I do the right thing?
  • Corolla - timing chain or cam belt? 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Plus if there's any other quick tips to look out for, (I have been through the CBC and How to Buy and Sell cars here). The dealers actually interested in my old E reg corolla! I didn't mention the lack of working alternator as I might not like the S reg when I drive it anyway! Since a scrap yard want £38 for a replacement alternator for my car and get my old in part-ex, then my mate can't do it for 3 three weeks, I'm stuck.
  • Invalidated Warranty and Servicing 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have just found out that we have invalidated the warranty on my wife's Punto by overlooking a service. We bought the car when it was about 8 months old with 2000 miles on the clock. It is now 24 months old with 11500 miles. We assumed it would need a service at 12,000 miles so I booked it in this morning. Bloke told me it should have had a 12 month service and since this was missed the warranty is now invalid.
