BMW 3 Series - Car buying advice - is a second hand BMW too risky 31 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I could afford the odd extra costs, but obviously wouldn't want to buy a money pit and something ridiculous to own and maintain. I can also get a 44k miles Volvo S40 2.0, which seems more sensible, but doesn't excite me too much. Both are nearly the same price in insurance - around Volvo at £1300 and BMW at £1400. What do you think? -

PSA Diesels - 1.6 or 2.0 more reliable? 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
I just wanted to get the group consensus on the respective reliability of these two engines as fitted to the Focus II and Volvo S40 (amongst other cars). At 5 years, 80,000 miles, there is little difference in purchase price between the two engine sizes in either model of car, although 2.0 volvos are more numerous than 1.6s, with the opposite trend in Focii. -
Renault Espace (2002 - ) - 2005 3.5 Flat battery 2 Feb 2009 (Forum)
These last few weeks been cold & icy so not been out in it much at all. For the 2nd time in 9 months it needed a jump start from my trusty old 1991 Volvo 940 Estate. We've left the Volvo for 5 weeks in the past without using it, then it still started first time. It appears that with the Esapce, with all its security SYSTEMS and key less entry, this must drain the battery and so after a few weeks the BATTERY is all but flat. -
What sports saloon 5-7k 6 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Circumstances have changed slightly (in that the fabled Coupe Cambelt change is closer, and likely to be more expensive than I thought) meaning I may need to change car sooner than I thought (within the next 6 months possibly). In turn, this means that I can't afford to buy any of the cars I had my eye on (Alfa 156 GTA, Volvo S60R, Volvo S40T5) as I don't really want to get any finance, and they're all £10k+ So, with the following criteria, what possible cars are there for me? Price: £5-7k 4 or 5 door Reasonably pacey. -
New car for mother. 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
My mum needs a new car as she has decided to sell her 94L Volvo 850 T5 Auto (offers invited, its only done 75k miles). As she will be driving in heavy traffic a lot of the time, i wish to buy her an automatic. She wants something relatively small (ie focus sized, or perhaps smaller) with reasonable performance- i have advised her she will find most things slow after the 225 bhp volvo- and air-conditioning, if possible. -
Climate Control 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I would expect it to do this regardless of the outside temperature, the time of year and the length of the journey. I belive a previous Renault Safrane I had did exactly this. My current Volvo Needs to be turned up high in Winter, and low in summer. I have 'mentioned' this twice to the Volvo dealer, but it passes all of their tests. They suggest that I turn the temperature up at the begining of a journey to warm up the interior, and then turn it down when the desired temperature is acheived. -
Honda CRV 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I took a new CRV i-VTEC SE Sport manual for a test drive this morning and was very impressed with the driving experience - nice gearchange, good ride, reasonable steering and, of course, the elevated driving position. All in all it is very easy to drive with lots of space and a good boot. I'm considering it as a replacement for a 13 year old Volvo 740 estate. Although the Volvo is very thirsty I would expect to use the Honda a lot more and so the fuel consumption is quite an important consideration. I know that some regular contributors to the Backroom have CRV's.Any advice on real-world mpg figures would be much appreciated. -
Wot car? 22 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I am looking to change my 10 year old very reliable Volvo 740 for a similar sized car but am really put off by the cost of even simple repairs to the electrics on modern cars. For example, my wife recently bought a Mondeo privately and, as we were only given one key, she was told she had to have the whole thing re-coded at at a cost of £75 including two new keys. -
S Class Mercedes - is this madness? 12 Aug 2016 (Forum)

Fake prices on Autotrader 10 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have conplained to Autotrader but with no avail. Check out the brain surgeon advertising a Volvo S60 for £999 and then say 'the price is £2,500 in the text. He even has the gall to say no timewasters. I called the (premium rate) Autotrader contact nunber just to call him a monkeys rear end. -

Any current car with headlamp wipers? 5 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Both my Volvo S80 and Mercedes W124 have headlamp wipers, but I can't recall seeing a current-production car with these little wiperettes. High-pressure washers, certainly - but have wipers been quietly pensioned off? -
