  • Driving in the 90s and 100s 20 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I fell off my chair laughing as she was filmed coming out of her house , shuts door , turns deadpan to camera and says 'Wheres my walking stick ?? and returns to house to collect it. She was later filmed driving off from the hairdressers with her walking stick on the roof of her BMW and being stopped by a lady to return it .
  • A change in a speed limit 17 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Now I lived within a few miles of this bit of road for over 30 years and remember it being built, it was always national speed limit dual carriageway though maust have changed to 50 recently, seems that my apparent familiarity with the road could have caught me out had there been a speed camera/check in place. Lesson learnt.
  • Warning: Sat Nav stupid questions 5 May 2005 (Forum)
I understand it comes loaded with a UK map, but presumably this needs periodic updates, is this done via a weblink, and is there a charge, or do they send out a new CD now and then? 2. Static speed cameras: Are these on the system or is this an option? 3. Laser warning: I assume this is not part of the system, and something like RoadAngel is required? 4. I assume it can't pre-warn you of traffic incidents to avoid, do other systems have a live sat link for this info?
  • Vigilantes 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
He argued that most of us would not hesitate to report a serious offence like a hit and run driver; so why not lesser offences? Well few of us would condemn the father with the video camera, perhaps we are less convinced about the speed gun toting villagers. Parking offences?? Nah So where do we draw the line?

In fact, in this thread it should not be. No Questions About PC\'s. They now go in another Thread. No politics No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming No arguments or slanging matches Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm ) Any of the above will be deleted.

  • 20 mph limit at junctions 3 May 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone know the rational behind these limits? I suspect I will write to the council to find out. (Please, this is not an anti-speed-camera thread.)
  • Court appearance soon for speeding :( 30 Apr 2003 (Forum)
...well not for speeding as such; I believe the misdemeanour is failing to respond to the Notice of Intended Prosecution. Basically I was caught on camera speeding back in October of last year, but didn?t know because the paperwork was sent to my old address. I hadn?t bothered to inform the DVLA of my change of address, at least not until December of last year when I renewed my tax.
  • Falling Insurance Costs 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
OK I am now 35 as opposed to 34 last year, apart from that nothing else has changed. My only speeding conviction was April 99, 45 in a 30 by a camera. My most recent fault accident was November 2001 (well it wasn't my fault I got stiched due to a technicality and had to share blame). I have had no incidents in 2002 at all. Is this their way of saying "Well Done Hugo!"?
  • Misleading Speed Signs 27 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I then turned off but could see blue lights and what was obviously a major accident about half a mile ahead. Now this bit of the M11 is well covered by cameras and is right next to the control centre. The dimwit who set the fourth sign to 50 mph ought to be taken out and shot. It was misleading and could easily have led to traffic approaching the stationary blockage at too high a speed.
  • Hyundai i30 - Hire car 20 Jan 2024 (Forum)
I think it is the thrummy note which makes it sound a bit frail ( I am sure it isn't actually) in comparison to a 4-cylinder. It is probably the base model so only has 4 e-windows, a reverse camera and little other frippery. This is good. The handbrake is manual (good) but the centre armrest/cubby box obstructs it. Handling is fine and the ride actually very compliant (no low profiles).
  • 20 MPH Signs 10 Jun 2023 (Forum)
If you are at the front of one of these queues it is almost embarrassing but what can you do with speed cameras lurking and it is law.  For those living in the rest of the UK i would not get too complacent because the days of enjoyable motoring if it even exists today could be lost to you soon. The car has become public enemy number one for more reasons than 20limits
  • Adaptive Cruise control 3 Jul 2022 (Forum)
A customer has a Golf with ACC, he is complaining that if he sets the cruise control to 50  and then the limit goes to 60 the car speeds up to the new speed limit.  Apparently the cars cameras recognise the 60 sign or the GPS tells the car to speed up.    I never new this function as I thought it was mainly to keep you a safe distance from the car in front.     Just because a road is marked 60 you may not want to travel at this pace or the car/driver might not be capable of such a speed on some roads...
  • 2016 Volvo V40 1.6 D drive 19 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Over styled gear knob not a particularly pleasant shape for your hand All black inside including roof lining, relentless black!. Alloy high lights on dashboard and console catch the sun. Reversing camera necessary and very useful. Not as sharp to drive as the 2006 1.6 petrol Focus I also drove. Steering and gear change better on Focus although console and gear change of Focus set up for LHD even though it was RHD.
  • Volvo XC60 - dash cam replacement 6 Feb 2020 (Forum)
I had a Silent Witness dash cam installed and hard wired. The mounting is just right of the mirror cluster, fixed to the windscreen. The camera will detach from its triangular mounting. It is the most disappointing piece of equipment I have had the misfortune to buy. Difficult to use, no instructions at all. You have to go online and download all sorts of stuff even just to playback on your laptop.
