Ford Mondeo 1 (1993 - 1996) - 95 1.8 Help! Car's dead! 12 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It's only done 75,000 and is only really used as a runabout, however after a recent couple of motorway runs it developed a kind of rattling/knocking sound which seemed to be coming from the front right and was only really noticeable when taking my foot OFF the accelerator (even while it was doing this at the start it was still driving well, and at speed). -
The sun's bringing them out. 3 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I reported the incident as a RTA in case he 'threw a seven' during the night. The lads at the nick had good laugh ! If I knew where he lived, I could go and run into his car...my 16 stone could do a bit of serious damage ! I suppose all those friends of Coronary Care will be coming out now, Joggers, Squash and Golf players, etc. At least, I can be proud to say I had my Myocardial Infarction the proper way, 4 frames of snooker, 4 pints o Websters bitter with crisps and a little activity at home later ! -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 Engine Diagnostic warning light keeps comin 31 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Since September it has been to the Peugeot dealers 6 times because of the Engine Diagnostic light coming on, also the 'symptoms' have been minor, varied and intermittent, including, a reluctance to pull away on first drive after light comes on and running away without foot on accelerator, other times there's nothing to indicate a problem except that it doesn't 'feel' quite right. First time they said it was the throttle sensor, and they 'fixed' it. -
Another "what car should I get" post...... 15 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The jobs worth about £500 a month more than I currently get, so I don't want to blow most of that on petrol and other running costs, lol. Any thoughts or suggestions on where I/we start looking/test driving? Cheers, Angus -
Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1993 1.1 - Starting problems 10 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Battery is good and spark is evident. Without exception if I tow it for a bump starts it starts ok after 25 yards and runs fine immediately. Have tried various numbers of accelerator pumps pre turnover and holding pedal to the floor, cleaning breather, taking of air filter etc but cannot find a single reliable 'trick' to get it going. -
How quickly does a car look old fashioned ? 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Some cars stand the visual test of time better than others whereas others age very quickly when their production run stops. For example, I think a Volvo 850 estate still looks reasonably modern where another maker's early 90s model might look positively antidiluvian. It's the speed at which it happens I notice. -
Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - 05 1.8 - intermittent clutch problems 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Hows this? I run two 05 galaxys, deisel within my cab company. Had an intermittent gear change problem and also dreadful clutch burn when in traffic, on one of them. Fitted x3 clutches, (some even free from Ford). -
Beautiful cars on film 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I got to thinking of which films show the finest of automobile history in their true time scenarios, not imaginary eccentrics running round in 40 year old cars set in the present day. I'll name one, but its not really a film, the Poirot series which the marvellous David Suchet has made his own. -
Volkswagen Golf I GTI and Citu Golf (1975 - 2009) - 'Best' modern petrol engine 7 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have rose tinted memories of my Mk1 Golf GTi (AUM 880X) with the 1.6 engine and 105bhp (I think). Driven very briskly when the opportunity arose and continued to run faultlessly up to 140k miles after I sold it. This was followed by an Audi 80 Sport (B626***) with the 1.8 engine. Bought 3rd hand by myself and ran faultlessly until I sold it with 145k miles when it was succumbing to rust problems.A friend of mine bought a Mk2 Golf GTI 8V (H reg) at a year old and only sold it 3 years ago with 180k miles because he fancied a change!! -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.6 quick to heat up 5 Jan 2009 (Forum)
inspected under bonnet no leaks or obvious, contunied journey as normal. normal journey today. to work. inspected fluid levels and reservoir was empty. topped up, and left engine running 15 minutes on drive. temp gauge is showing middle, but no heat in any of the pipes to or from the radiator.. as with other threads.. am i likely to be experiencing a thermostat stuck shut?? or anything more serious like the water pump? -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 03 2.0 catalytic converter fault 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Also there is a type of loud tappety noise, more like a clanging, comes in when the car is under acceleration. and its very hard to point out where the actual noise is coming from, but with this it runs very smooth. Today on start up from cold the catalytic converter fault came on the car, Now standing at idle speed the car shakes more violently, and seems to be lot of smoke from exhaust, and the tappety sound is more present. but i drove the car for a short distance, and it ran as it allways does, on stopping the car regained its shakes. -
Is a Perodua a safe buy? 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I just have this little voice in my head saying Perodua are a mickey mouse business always on the brink of collapse ( well uk imports anyway ). Is this the case or am I just running scared of a relatively unknown brand? Id be interested to know HJ's take on Perodua as a company. -
Toyota Yaris II/Vitz (2006 - ) - Yaris 1.3 TR 26 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I tried a few Yaris's and this one seemed typical, a bit noisy and not that well finished but that's what you get. Since I had the car, it has been back to the dealer 4 times for poor running and clutch judder, and once more to another dealer when it refused to start. Each time it has been in I have asked for the poorly fitting glove boxes to be looked at and each time I have been told that they are normal. -
FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 98 1.2 MOT failed on emissions 11 Nov 2008 (Forum)
We sorted the radius arms with a lot of grunting and groaning, were advised that Cataclean might sort the emissions, because the readings were a relatively marginal fail, so we duly put some of that in the tank and gave it a run. Yesterday (Sat 8th) took it for retest and again it failed on the emissions, though it was slightly better. It's going in for diagnosis tomorrow to try to identify the problem, but I'm a little confused at the persistent failure. The car has been regularly serviced, plugs, oil changes, filters etc, it had a new cat back in March and yet the cat appears to be rattling as if its breaking up already. -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 99 1.1 - battery replaced, now won't start 6 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Car belongs to my partners son and he's just turned 17 so is chomping at the bit to get out in it, and also has zero money for main dealer repairs/diagnosis. I haven't heard the car run, but he tells me it was fine before (while giving me that 'why have you broken my car' look!) Interestingly, the radio/interior light circuit are also dead, but fuses are fine. He fitted a new stereo to it, but again said it was working fine before i took the battery off and recharged it. -
Simple late 90's small car engines - advice needed 13 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Then there i s the VAG engines, seem to be a bit ove rated from the cars I have seen so far. Basically I want a car I can run into the ground without having to worry about cam belt changes every two minutes etc. I also need something new enough for turning up to jobs in. I've been told to avoid the Corsa 1.0 as they are too slow and too easily to stall. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1996 1.4 RN Auto Start Problems 11 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Basically, sometimes it just will not start, it turns over fine and has a good strong battery and most of the time, it starts at the turn of the key, almost beating the key! Once started, it runs without fault, no weak idle or stalling etc. I've changed the distributor cap, rotor arm, Coil, ignition leads and cleaned and checked the plugs. I've broken down and checked all the plugs I can see, all were very clean and dry but have been soaked in WD40 since being broken down, just in case. -
Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - Scuba Diving - Don't use a Honda...... 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Although I don't mind one way or the other I think a diesel is the best option , I want at least a 2 litre and I prefer Japanese reliability. I was thinking along the lines of a CR-V or similar but it may not save me that much in running costs. My local Honda agent is good but tends to put £1000 on the top of car supermarket price for similar vehicles. I do not have to buy at the moment as I can use the company car so I throw it open to you for suggestions. -
Renault Megane II (2002 - 2008) - 05 1.9dci starting and then cutting out 3 Oct 2008 (Forum)
1.9dci 05 45,000, The last 2 mornings the engines started ok and then immediately died after about 2 seconds, on pressing the button again it turns over but doesn?t fire, press it again and it eventually fires up and runs fine although the idle seems very slightly a bit erratic for a few minutes. It drives absolutely fine. No warning lights. Turning it off after a few minutes or when its warm and restarting it starts fine. -
replacing my VR6 for max economy! 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
but i'm a bit scared of the reliability issues? What are the other candidates worth considering? I'm pretty much just interested in running costs over the next 2 years, i've had my fun, now is the time to start paying off some credit cards....
