  Mid-range, a 15k unwarranted 2001Y Focus 2.0 Ghia in a nice metallic blue made a predictable £6,900. A rare 45k mile 97R Peugeot 306 Roadster (complete with its hardtop) sold for £5,900. A radiant red 31k 2000X Puma 1.4 sold for a strong £5,975. A faded 92k mile 96N Citroen AX 1.0 Debut made a serious £450 due to its low insurance rating.

  The answer has to be the interior. Like Honda did with the Civic and is about to do with the Jazz, and like Peugeot disappointingly didn't do with the 307, FIAT has completely re-thought its seating plan. As with mini MPVs in the same market sector, the five-door Stilo has been designed to be easy to get into and out of with plenty of room inside and a high driving position to give a feeling of control.

  The oldest car on offer was a 1937 Austin Seven Opal project that made a healthy £12,320, while a wonderfully ‘shabby chic’ and original 1938 Peugeot 402 fetched £6,600. Estate cars were particularly well-represented with no fewer than three Abbott-bodied Ford Zodiac Estates which raised between £1,100 and £3,100 and four Vauxhall estates including a rare 1960 Velox Friary which made £9,900 and a 1964 Victor FB Deluxe which raised £6,820.

  The ZR160, with a variable valve controlled (VVC) version of the 1.8-litre K-Series, was a genuine hot hatch, in the spirit of cars like the Peugeot 205 GTI and Citroen Saxo VTS. Build quality was flaky, but grins were guaranteed. As a marketing ploy, then, the Z-Cars were an impressive feat of engineering. Of substance over style. Even the ‘cooking’ versions, namely the ZR 105 (1.4 K-Series) and ZS 120 (1.8 K-Series) were rewarding to drive, with great handling, while the appearance became a little less brash as they became a common sight on the roads.

Needless to say, the 308 on Michelin Primacy 3s travelled considerably further, bearing out the Michelin claim that over the life of a set of tyres the fuel saving will be around 70 litres.
