  • Mercedes C320cdi - Replacement turbo on C320cdi 31 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I'd be temped to live with it, only I suspect it'll get worse - if so, would it cause a bigger bill? I've always been careful to idle the car after a run, hoping to extend turbo life. I've seen a lot a sites on the internet advertising reconditional services. I'm guessing they might be a lot cheaper - http://www.essexturbos.com/ for example offer a 24 month warranty.

  • Ford focus econetic - Knocking engine sound after injector seal replaced 4 Oct 2013 (Forum)
My 2008 focus was taken into a garage to have the injector seals replaced as this is a common fault with the 1.6d engine. Taking the car into the garage the car was running well with no problems. The garage replaced the seals but said during the process it developed the knocking sound or if the knocking was there before you could not hear it because of the broken injector seal.
  • Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi 2002 - Lumpy Starting 3 Sep 2013 (Forum)
During the hot weather in July the engine when starting made unusual, loud noises and writhed about until actually running.  This would occur each time the engine was started during each day.  Then come the cooler weather in early August the engine started normally, quietly and no flailing about  (coincidence?).
  • Vauxhall Corsa D 2006 - 1.3 CDTi - Yellow car/spanner indicator light 13 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I checked the usual suspects listed in the Haynes manual and found nothing so I gave up. One thing I did notice was that when I started there was a puff of black smoke, normal running there was no smoke, so decided to check the glow plugs. Checking the plugs with a multimeter I found one of them had gone open circuit, so I fitted a new one. This action stopped the puff of black smoke when the engine was started and it  also cured the yellow car/spanner indicator light coming on.
  • Audi A3 - 2013 A3 1.6 TDI mpg concerns 7 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Help Ok on Tuesday I received my long awaited Audi A3 1.6 tdi s-line which for economy reasons was replacing my 2010 Golf GTD. The audi has been running at around 39 mpg over 400 miles since Tuesday which I am concerned about, this is also with AC off and me driving carefully. I know it's early days but still ! I have had a brand new audi a3 before (1.9 tdi 105ps 2009) which immediately performed amazing on mpg and was noticeably better from the off than my 53 plate 2.0 tdi 140ps My golf (GTD 2.0 170ps) was averaging around 41-42 mpg on a quoted 50+ combined but the Audi is quoted at 74 combined.
  • Fiat stilo - Fiat stilo immobiliser 18 Jun 2013 (Forum)
It took the garage 3 months to figure out the problem, in which they had to send my ecu unit to fiat and get a replacement (so they said)! From June last year the car has worked fine and evidently my warranty has run out. However, yesterday the same problem that occurred! The stupid immobiliser sign is back and I can't start my car. I can't believe that it has happened again. The garage gave me no paperwork last year regarding putting in a new ecu unit.
  • BMW 520 - Replacement for my BMW E39 520i SE 15 Jun 2013 (Forum)
I don't like the E60 and the newer models i@ve seen are either poverty spec and / or high mileage Jaguar XK - Love the style look of the car but will it bankrupt me in running costs Audi A6 - Same problem as facelift 5 series So anything else to throw into the pot for me to look at TIA
  • 1999 Rover 75 Diesel 30 May 2013 (Forum)
I am expecting to pay around the £1,000 mark if not less as they write the cost of the car off as soon as its purchased. I dont want to end up with a potential money pit and not be able to afford to run it. Is this a sensible purchase or should I go for something older and with less miles for the money?? Any help much appreciated!!
  • Where does an engine stop? experiment 14 May 2013 (Forum)
I observed the engine at the moment of switching off, and as the engine slows to a stop, it either just succeeds in plopping over a compression, or else it just fails to make it over the hill and runs back by a similar amount in the other direction. There are thus four points around the circumference of the starter ring where wear would be concentrated. However, with modern pre-engaged starter motors I don't think there is the kind of crash engagement that old inertia motors used to have with the flywheel teeth.
  • Ford Fusion 2 (2003) - Coil pack/leads! 4 May 2013 (Forum)
I wonder what are the chances of a new pack and leads going "bad" after a few days (perhaps 100 miles of running at most)? Anyone else seen this. Garage will send the bad set back for a refund, so no extra cost to me. So, thanks Alan, and fingers crosssed it was just a bad set - given that that's all they changed the first time and this time as well!!!
  • Ford Mondeo 1.8 Edge 125 - Flywheel & Starter 1 May 2013 (Forum)
My 2007 1.8 TDCI Edge Ford mondeo (96,000miles)cut out on me while taking off from some traffic lights the other day. The car had been running fine and then  as I accelerated from the lights the car revs seemed to go way up and then I heard a whining noise, the car lost power and then died on me. I have been unable to start it since.
  • Audi A4 1.9 tdi or Volvo S40 d? 15 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Basically it is time to stop spending money on my VW Golf 115 tdi. I normally buy a car and run it untill the doors fall off so to speak! I have two choices of car as mentioned in the subject, but here is more detail. The audi has 200,000 With FSH, on a 04 plate, The volvo has 75,000 FSH on a 53 plate I know this seems to be a no brainer however a family member owns a similar audi and has covered nearly 300,000 miles with few problems.
  • Porsche Boxster - Replacing Porsche boxster with 4 seat car? 15 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Budget is circa 14 to 15k got to have ideally Leather and Bluetooth. Looked at Audi a1 think its a expensive polo. I would love to reduce my running costs so lower circa band c or below road tax is ideal. I also saw the DS3 but I still think it's a French car which I think will lose money and fall apart. So I need a small fun bit different with 4 seats nippy performance with a few toys on.
  • V.Vectra 1.8 SRI 2008 or Toyota Avensis 1.8 2007 - Vauxhall Vectra 2008 or Toyota Avensis 2007 5 Feb 2013 (Forum)
We have been looking for a family car that is reliable & economical with space, mostly used for small runs but twice a month for 300 mile round trip, something with good boot space, that we can clock up miles on without worrying about things going wrong with it! We think we've pretty much narrowed it down to both of these cars, they look very similar, so I'm wondering if you were given the choice between both which would you choose & why?
  • Spacious family car to seat 5 circa £9 - £10k (used) 31 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Air con a must That's more or less it.  The car would be used fora short school run during the week and then days out at weekends and possibly holiday in the summer. We had a Verso for a little while, but it went back due to an underlying damp issue - we also found it to be a little too bumpy over some surfaces and the Diesel that we tested was noisy.
  • KIA Magentis - To buy or not to buy? 26 Dec 2012 (Forum)
They did try to spray some lube on the pulleys and belts but that did nothing. One of the pulleys didn't seem to be running true and was little wobbly, which made the belt move left/right. I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what it is but I did have a similar occurrence on an Alfa, which was possibly a bent crankshaft???
  • Mercedes C-Class - Estate 2003 CDI - Engine - pick is very slow 30 Nov 2012 (Forum)
initially it had a great pick up and all was good, but now it has developed a problem with a pick up as it tends to hold after initial pick up and after 50 mph it just dies out and than slowly go beyond that point, also I have noted that when I start in the mornings for first 10/15 mins the car runs fine with out in pick issue, but suddenly dies out afterwards, even if I give full gas it tend to move slowly to gain speed. Once this occurs than after that car pick is really slow even if I stop and switch off and start again.
  • Volvo 440/460 - cold starting all ok again... 28 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Thought I ought to do it sooner rather than later due to weather predicted to be a lot colder this week. Seems to run better as well, though this evening will be a nice test. Just thought you all might like to know.... Stu
  • BerlingoBerlingo Multispace 1.6Hdi Manual - Rattle/Knock when switching off 3 Nov 2012 (Forum)
As you turn the engine on or off, listen out for a rattle from the engine that goes away once the engine is running and continues for a second or two after the engine has been turned off. If you hear this rattle then it may be caused by failure of the engine cover studs. These can break, causing the engine cover to rattle as the engine vibrates when it has been switched on or off.
