Audi A4 1.9 tdi or Volvo S40 d? - kirklander73

Good evening I am hoping you can help with a choice on my next commuter?

Basically it is time to stop spending money on my VW Golf 115 tdi. I normally buy a car and run it untill the doors fall off so to speak!

I have two choices of car as mentioned in the subject, but here is more detail.

The audi has 200,000 With FSH, on a 04 plate,

The volvo has 75,000 FSH on a 53 plate

I know this seems to be a no brainer however a family member owns a similar audi and has covered nearly 300,000 miles with few problems. My golf 172,200 but was bought cheap as it had been abused! the volvo is something new to me entierely!

I have looked on the reviews on this site but still cannot decide! my commute is 90 miles per day all dual carriageway bar a small amount so handling or sportiness really isnt something i worry about! Reaiability is however.

Can anyone help to shed some impartial advice before i lose all my marbles completely???

Many thanks for reading this!!

Normally I would take an Audi over pretty much anything else just because they are my car of choice, but in this case, the Volvo will also run to a huge mileage and as it has much less to start with stands a good chance of lasting longer.

Also with 200k miles its not just the engine, its the suspension, steering, turbo, clutchflywheel that need to be considered too. The Audi is the nicer car without a doubt but in this case I would plump for the Volvo, in fact an S40 Sport Lux is on the shopping list for my other halfs next car.

I agree with Countryroads: there's nothing wrong with well looked after, regularly serviced high-milers, but 200,000 is a lot of miles.

Maybe think about a Golf or Skoda Octavia with the same 1.9 TDI engine: for the same money you will get something newer and less well-travelled than you would with an Audi.

Thanks to you both!, the only problem i have with the volvo is a possibility of the dual mass flywheel giving real problems (as reported on the reviews on here) and i will try and find looked after octavia. As for the golf well many now seem to be "used" by the younger generation with all the "mods" that now seem to be the norm.....

The Audi will have a DMF aswell, all modern diesels and alot of petrols do too, my 1998 A4 has one, its a petrol turbo...original at 140k miles though, as is the clutch.

Golfs always seem way too dear to me for what they are, how about something like a Seat Toledo, better equipped and cheaper than a Golf and a bit more youthful than the Skoda.

It's certainly uglier than the Octavia: I'd be curious to know what it is about the Toledo (we're talking about the old model I presume) that makes it more 'youthful' !

haha, well I suppose its in the eye of the beholder and yes gen 1 Octavia and whatever gen the newer Toledo saloon (not the hideous faux MPV one) is but I would certainly at the age of 26 rather drive a Seat than a Skoda, plus model for model they tend to be better equipped and less 'taxi'. A Toledo V5 in black with 16inch double 5 spokes and black leather and alcantara is a great looking car! An Octavia L&K is sensible and smart, but dull... It has to be said that being as they are the same car, the Seat is cheaper to buy, tighter to drive and I dont think they ever did a boggo non air con manual window edition for cabbies, but that is purely my preference, afterall I like Audis which is basically just the above with softer trim and a badge!

Just another car to consider...you drive an Octavia Avant? It is definately a less youthful brand, people I know who want a VW or Audi will also consider a Seat, but never a Skoda...its just the way it is. They dont do a 3 door Fabia because the market for A1, Polo and lastly Ibiza is where that demographic is focused within VAG. Skoda is marketed at sensible grown ups, the VrS range is for sensible grown ups who want to go fast...the inherently identical Golf GTi is for fun loving enthusiasts of high performance with practicality secondary on their list. We know its the same, but thats not how VAG play the game and that is still how the public as a whole perceives it.

Assuming you average 45 m.p.h., that means you might spend about 35% of your entire free time (excludes work, sleep, washing and eating allowances) getting to and from work, while spending about 20% of the average net take home pay on fuel alone!!

Are there no decent places to live 5 miles from your place of work?

Unfortunately our collective families live in lincolnshire, and my partners job is here (she earns much more than me and cannot drive) fortunately the roads are clear early in the morning and relatively clear when i return home. she keeps telling me to buy newer however i really dont like loosing money on cars!

Avant? is this an estate? If so I have looked but it seems that they hold value bettter than the hatch, same with the v40.

Its only what HJ states in the review of the s40 that they can have serial problems with the DMF. perhaps i should look at this warranty direct for the first year annd see how it goes with the volvo!

My Octavia is an estate, but the hatch is almost as practical and as you suggest will be quite a bit cheaper secondhand. Both will be cheaper than an A4, and my suggestion was that for the same money you could get one with less astronomical mileage.

Can you find an 54 + S40 it's a generally much beter thought of car. Focus clone rather than mitsi Carisma clone? I used to have a 54reg MkII S40 and it was an extremely comfoutable place to be, important for 90 mile a day commute.

Reliability was only so-so so A4 might be better but if your looking at volvos see how much a Mk II is. I traded my 185000 miler for only £1200 so you might get one cheaper than you think?

At this age and mileage you are buying a big risk. Buy the car you like after the obvious checks and have some spare cash for repairs.

I love my A4! One of my friends owns a Volvo and having driven his car I can honestly say that both cars are lovely to drive. I think it all boils down to personal preference. His car has now covered 265,000 miles! He has had no major problems with the car. Just usual maintance. I am hoping my Audi lasts as well as his Volvo!
