Mercedes C-Class - Estate 2003 CDI - Engine - pick is very slow - Andaaz

Hi

I have recently bought a C-Class Estate Cdi 2003.

initially it had a great pick up and all was good, but now it has developed a problem with a pick up as it tends to hold after initial pick up and after 50 mph it just dies out and than slowly go beyond that point, also I have noted that when I start in the mornings for first 10/15 mins the car runs fine with out in pick issue, but suddenly dies out afterwards, even if I give full gas it tend to move slowly to gain speed. Once this occurs than after that car pick is really slow even if I stop and switch off and start again.

Otherwise car engine is fine no smoke or anything like that - I just got it serviced locally as they thought it might be fuel filter etc etc - but no improvement.

Car dash doesnt show any malfunction as well

If you can please help and let me know, what can be the likely cause of this problem and what will be the damage

Many Thanks

S

Does the engine malfunction light actually work or has someone disconnected it.

Hi

Thanks for your reply

I have no idea about that but I will take it to local garage to check. Although the computer on the car is showing 0 Malfunction ... I suppose if it was something to do with engine it will show under that as well

If it has a DPF, perhaps it's coming up for a burn-off.

Why does the very mention of Mercedes name send me into socialist mode?

Sod your mercedes support the miners!

I'd go for a visit to a nice country pub about 50 miles away, trying to exceed the speed limit at every opportunity, without getting caught, and see if it improves things.

Almost certainly the car will not have a DPF fitted. Where the problem may lie is within the turbo system. There's a motor which opens ports on the inlet manifold, that operates as part of the turbo spooling-up > this motor can stick/fail. It can also be the arm from the motor which opens the ports - these are well known for becoming loose/snapping off the mounting.

You need to get the fault codes read, as otherwise you're in the dark.

Hi CWS

Many Thanks for your input

This makes sense, I will get it checked today/tomorrow and will let you know how it went.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I did try to push the car, but that didnt help.

I suspect its a related problem to the butterfly valves. If you look from underneath the car up at the inlet manifold, at the raer you will see a motor with a rod attached ( hopefuly ) going to links along the manifold. Often the linkage falls apart ar the flaps do.

If the linkages have come apart do not drive as worn butterfly flaps can fall into the engine causing majpor damage !

Ne wmanifold used to be around £900 quid , suspect they ar a bit cheaper now. At one time it was such a common problem on Mercs that the manifolds were in short supply.

The inlet manifold flaps on the mb engines don't ever actually come off (unlike with BMW's!), they just get more and more worn/rattly.

On experience, do not buy an aftermarket inlet manifold. Very few are actually available and the ones that are, are quite cheap and nasty ie pastic seems split. If you can't afford brand new then try and get a salvage manifold that's in good condition.

Sounds like it is going into "limp" mode. It could be for anyone of a number of reasons - you need to get it properly code read and see what is triggering it.

The engine management light does not normally light up when these go into limp mode.

Really well why did mine come off the actuator then and left hanging down ?

Put very nicely there.

It is rare example then, as various mb mechanics I know have never seen it happen on numerous cars fitted with this style of manifold.
