  • Trip to Poland. 14 Sep 2007 (Forum)
To Poland, on petrol it averaged 43 Mpg (1,000 miles) which I thought was very frugal considering. Very confortable, despite the 12 hour drive and very fast. It is a very large car and fits a lot. The use of LPG brang MPG down to 35 mpg - which is still very good i.m.o. Cheapest LPG is in Belgium (35p per litre or so).
  • Top Gear Thread Volume 30. 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Coastguards have slammed an audacious bid by Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to DRIVE across the Channel. The daredevil trio all attempted to make the crossing across the world?s busiest shipping lane in three specially-adapted cars for the hit BBC TV show. And, remarkably, one of the vehicles actually reached the French coast.
  • Celeb Car Sightings 24 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Anyway, here goes: Sighted restaurateur and TV chef Rick Stein at an airport in the SW last night driving off in a rather nice 911 Carrera S. The Porsche was only spoilt slightly by a ding on the near side back wing.
  • Cycle Racing on Public Roads 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Since when have motorists been banned from public roads for the benefit of non-licenced, non-Road Fund payers? This was the first time I have seen it happen in about half a century of driving.
  • Skoda Superb (2002 - 2008 ) - Skoda Superb or Honda Accord? 20 Aug 2007 (Forum)
We'll need a baby seat soon and I want to get a car that's practical and not going to let me down. Would be good to have something that's a good drive and not too harsh on the senses. Was going to look at a Golf 1.8T today but having read around a bit it seems they have an undeserved reputation for reliability - the facts don't seem to match the reality.
  • Cit C3 HDi idles but cuts with throttle. 1 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hello backroomers.... have a 54 plate Citroen C3 1.4HDi 8 valve. Done 61500 miles. Have been having intermittent "hics" whilst driving for a while now. Got much worse yesterday, it will start no problem and idle no problem, but when any load is put on it, pushing the accelerator etc - it "cuts" the result being revs dropping and recovering, the rev counter goes up and down, kind of like extreme hunting.
  • Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTi 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I just want to get your opinions/comments on 1.7DTi engine in Astras. A friend of mine has told me you've to remove the engine mounts before you could change the drive belt on it and he's told me they're hated by the mechanics. I would like to get your expert opinions and in particular if someone has got one of these would love to hear from them tool. Many Thanks
  • Detecting stolen cars. 17 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The equipment used in tracing these stolen cars seemed to be very low technology and, if I am not mistaken was achieved by plod driving around and listening to a radio signal getting louder as they got closer to the stolen vehicle. Surely with modern technology the police could be directed to the stolen car much the same way as we find our way around using satellite navigation.
  • Fiat Panda 1.2 11 Jul 2007 (Forum)
A hoot to drive in town. Has the advantage of feeling significantly faster than a Honda Civic 1.4. Many have commented on the 'shopping trolly' ride quality. But it is light years away from the original Panda which really did have Flintstones suspension system: you could feel every single ridge even on the motorway.

  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 12v Idle problem 9 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi there, my friend has a 1998 R, vauxhall corsa 1.0 12v. When she is driving along, the engine revs fine, and all is well. Until she comes to a stop, as the engine returns to idle, the revs drop to 400rpm, and the accelerator has to be used to prevent it from stalling. Once the accelerator has been pressed, and the engine revved to about 1500rpm, the revs will return to normal idle speed.
  • White van and trailer? 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I thought trailer tyres weren't speed rated much above 90 anyway? Anyone seen worse than this? To cap it all - on the back "Hows my driving?"
  • VW Golf 1.6 LS W reg petrol 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Will run for about 10 minutes then when travelling will just cut out. Will not start for a few minutes then be okay. This can then happen at any time when driving. Can travel at any speed and the car will just switch off. No stuttering or miss-firing. The car has been put on the computor and no faults have been found. New electric coil and dis cap fitted. Any help would be great.
  • Fiat punto temp gauge problem 14 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I only have a light and not a monitor (ie like the speed meter). the light then goes of after i have been driving continuously for a period of time. I was wondering if anyone can give me advice as what to do about the light. is it serious or is it just a technical fault with the wiring and therefore not important. any help will be of use. thank you x
  • Thank You Manatee! 6 Jun 2007 (Forum)
At the end of the day I chose not to go ahead with the purchase but that was primarily based on my own personal driving experience of the CRV. Its people like him that make this forum such a friendly, useful and informative place to be part of. Once again, many thanks. Bobby [now looking for an expert source of knowledge on Altea XLs.....]
  • MGs set to roll from Longbridge Tues 29t 28 May 2007 (Forum)
BBC Reports: MG Rover's Longbridge factory in Birmingham is due to reopen on Tuesday under the Chinese ownership of Nanjing Automobile Corporation. Three new MG TF sports models are expected to drive off the recommissioned production lines at the opening ceremony. The West Midlands plant has been inactive since MG Rover collapsed in 2005 at a cost of about 6,000 jobs. But some critics have doubts about how viable full-scale production will be.
  • Disposing of a LHD car in the UK? 22 May 2007 (Forum)
He'll be getting a nice shiny new LR Discovery as a company car back in England. Problem is: how does he get shot of his 3yr-old left-hand drive French-registered Vectra GSi? It's worth more in France, but he hasn't got the time or patience or language-skills to try to sell it privately before he leaves France. Any suggestions on how to minimise the loss on the Vectra?
  • Ford Mondeo 1997 1.8 Zetec Overheating 7 May 2007 (Forum)
Hi, The temp gauge on my 100k Mondeo now shoots up to the top end of normal after only traveling a couple of miles. Have checked coolant levels and pipes and all are ok. Took it for a four mile drive and when I got back had a look and the cooling fan on the rad wasn't going round which you'd expect surely? How do I check if it's the fan, or the coolant sensors, etc? Help and advice much appreciated.
  • Honest John recommends a cc 29 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I recently bought a Ford Focus after looking a few VWs..All had problems with roof leaks creaking, ratles etc etc...On my experience I would say go for the Ford( if dont mind the long boot) NO rattles ,leaks, drives as well as the saloon and all the extras you could want for a big saving over the VW...so HJ why no Ford on the list? • 1995 micra running problem. 12 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My 1995 1L nissan micra normally runs fine but occasionally when I slow down to a junction it looses all power, judders and stops unless I rev it excessivly and drive it hard for a while and then it goes back to normal. It always starts first time everytime even straight after it plays up. I've checked fuse box and no sign of dirt or moisture. Also there is a slight rattle from the cam chain tensioner on tick over.
