Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTi - LinuxGeek
As most of you would know here, I'm thinking of replacing my Volvo S40. I just want to get your opinions/comments on 1.7DTi engine in Astras. A friend of mine has told me you've to remove the engine mounts before you could change the drive belt on it and he's told me they're hated by the mechanics. I would like to get your expert opinions and in particular if someone has got one of these would love to hear from them tool. Many Thanks

I had one as a hire car. Worst sounding diesel engine I've encountered.

Try before you buy, as they say.

Seem OK - for their size, they've decent power/economy.

The bill shows what the "mechanic" thinks. AFAIK they're OK. My wife has one. It does what it says on the tin, & it's 1999. Newer ones may be even better engines.

I've owned an Astra 1.7 DTI for over four years. When I got is, it had covered 30,000 miles, it has now covered nearly 160,000 miles.

The cambelt change is straightforward, although the top engine mount does need to be removed. It is far easier than in my previous Peugeot 405 diesel. The cambelt also only needs to be changed every 100,000 miles or ten years.

The engine is smoother than the Peugeot was, and slightly more powerful. I generally get about 55 mpg, which is good for the size of car. (It is the estate version).

In the time I've had the car, the only engine related problems have been a replacement starter motor, a replacement alternator, a new MAF sensor and a new head gasket. I think that this is pretty good over 130,000 miles.

i regularly drive Astra's at work............the older 2.0 diesel was fine, good for what it is and reasonably swift......

the 1.7 i find unacceptably flat and has to be worked hard for no real gain...
