Why close key roads for so long after accidents? 5 Oct 2009 (Forum)
As I write this [7.15pm] the A14 remains closed in both directions because of an accident before 3pm between J10 and J11. While enjoying the silence of the eventually cleared deserted road [which runs near the bottom of my garden - all traffic had to reverse back to J10] a police car drew up. 'Why paralyse a major route for so long?' I asked. The absurd reply was 'We have to treat it as a murder scene..' -
VW dsg 6 / 7 speed differences 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
m aware that the 7 speed is rated for less torque than the 6, and that it has dry clutches rather than ?wet? clutches running in oil. I find that the 7 speed Golf has a much sharper clutch engagement from rest, such that I have to ?squeeze? the throttle carefully to avoid a jerky takeoff, and in general I have to be much more accurate with throttle inputs. -
Hyundai i20 (2009) - AUTOMATIC I20 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)

Mazda 626 (2000 - 2002) - 00 2.0 Poor MPG economy 18 Sep 2009 (Forum)
My recently purchased 626 2.0 Sport is being a tad thirsty. It managed 28mpg on a really gentle long run and 21mpg on a more spirited drive over the Penines. Performance seems good although I have no perfect condition experience to compare it to. Idle is a tad lumpy, enough to cause very minor vibration of the gearstick. -
Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.8 engine management light stays on 12 Sep 2009 (Forum)
She and her husband know nothing much about cars and I fear a scam. Apart from being a bit overfull with [clean] oil the car seems fine. At 80,000m it's just run in, I think. I took it briefly up the road and it drives OK, apart from a slight wheel hub-type noise, unrelated to engine speed. It does not overheat. The rev counter oscillates a bit around 3,500 - 4000 but becomes steady at 5,000. -
Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 2001 2.0 HDI (110) - Battery drain 1 Sep 2009 (Forum)
This seemed to happen when the battery was replaced just before Christmas and is still an ongoing problem. You can also hear the current running through the main loom on the front of the engine to the relay/ECU. Can anyone help? -
NCB for two cars 1 Sep 2009 (Forum)
can't have it on two cars (however you can if both are with SAGA) My twist on the situation is that having purchased another car I realise that the old one has only a months insurance left to run. (not with SAGA) I am going to be storing it off road and don't particularly want to insure it whilst it is stored as it isn't worth much. However we do definitely need to use the old car for the next month. -

car insurance NCD 10 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I have been a named driver on her policy for 3 and a half years without any claims whatsoever. When I changed jobs I needed a new car for work so bought a little run around. I stayed with the same insurance provider that I had been a named driver on but they said I had to start my no claims again from scratch as they didnt recognise the no claims as a named driver, which leads me to 2 questions....where has my no claims gone, and whats the point of having named driver insurance if you get sweet FA for it in the future?? -
Pikes peak 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Pikes peak is a big rally cross style race in the USA for those that have never heard of it. It was run last weekend, and Marcus Gronholm now retired from WRC had a crack at it. Due to lack of oxygen (they think) at high altitude the turbo on his Fiesta exploded (at the time he was blitzing the course record) and filled the car with smoke, he pressed on with 4 km to go using left foot braking to keep what engine revs he had up, and when he finally completed the course, the overheated brakes caused the tyres to explode in flames. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 1998 1.9TDi - Limp Mode 21 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The only odd thing was when i put it back on and checked the voltage to it I had 14v on one side and nearly 7v on the other, surely there should on be supply on one side. Have run out of ideas so need someone who knows these engines. Thanks {moved to Technical Matters} -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 06 1.4 Intermittent Brake Lights 14 Jul 2009 (Forum)
As I mentioned they are only intermittently coming on. Any ideas please?. as it?s a bit dangerous considering she does the school run with the kids in the back and I reckon it?s only a matter of time before some bonehead drives into the back of her? Thanks Keith McCormack -
Volvo 850 (1992 - 1996) - workhorse estate 22 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, We are about to go through a complex family house move (selling 3 properties, buying 2), and have taken the decision to pick up a cheap estate hack to do tip runs, move large items etc. Having used a Volvo 940 for a similar purpose previously and been most impressed, this is our first choice (ruing ever having sold it actually). However, I'd also consider 740, 240 and 850. -
Honda Civic Type R II (2007 - ) - My Daughter's Boyfriend's New Go-kart 22 May 2009 (Forum)
Paul, my daughter's boyfriend, took delivery of his brand new, red Civic Type R yesterday and we went for a run. Now, last year I had the good fortune to drive one of these for a good while in the lanes of County Durham, courtesy of Honda, and found it to be one of the best hot hatches ever, though the suspension was very stiff (I mean, call an osteopath stiff). -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.4 Intermittent misfire 29 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The car's mileage is 92,000 and appears generally well maintained. The spluttering can happen at any time any place any speed. It can run for a couple of days, doing long journeys without doing it. It has been recently serviced...new plugs, filters etc. She asked the mechanic to bear this fault in mind, but it was no different after the service. 2 days ago she limped into a motorway service area & called the AA. -
Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 03 1.3 steam from engine 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
on arriving at work this morning my wife has found the engine at the rear to be billowing steam, the engine seams to be running fine, no engine malfunction light either.but have been expieriencing a short loss of power when pulling off when first starting car over the last couple of weeks, acctually, it started after having new lambda sensor fitted, but goes fine after that. when filling water up yesterday, i noticed some oil coming from the back of the head block, weve also had a small oil leak for some time, maybee from the sump, but oil levels are ok. we had the lambda sensor replaced last week, new coil , leads, and sparks in jan due to missfire. im hoping this may only be a hose thats gone, and not the head gasket. any ideas on possible cause ???? -
Suzuki Wagon R+ (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.3 what is causing my poor fuel economy? 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
The handbook says I should get between 36(urban) and 55(extra-urban) MPG but the most I have managed on a longish run at 65mph is 38mpg, and in mixed driving I get around 34mpg. Owners on suzuki forum report 45mpg is easily achievable. I've changed the plugs, oil, air filter and oil filters to no avail- and the tyre pressures are spot on. -
Ford Transit (2006 - ) - Buying a Transit with Duratorq engine 12 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Grateful for any advice on this purchase as a wrong decision may have a potentially disasterous effect on my small business. I currently run a 99 Transit 80 which is proving tiring to drive all day, but is mechanically sound albeit a little rusty. Most grateful to hear from anyone who has experience of this van.
