  No fewer than 45 examples of the Jaguar XJ-S, for example, were traded in and scrapped, as were 14 Porsche 944s, 18 BMW 6-Series, 88 Citroen 2CVs, 29 Peugeot 205 GTis and 22 Reliant Scimitars of various types. And if you’re wondering why there aren’t as many large saloons of the ’80s and ’90s on the roads as there used to be, it’s partly because the scrappage scheme saw the loss of 273 Saab 9000s, more than 700 Volvo 740s, 100-plus Ford Granadas and – amazingly – over a thousand Rover 600s.

  Part-exchange money ranged from a level £325 for a 106k mile 93L Mondeo 1.8LX 4-door through a strong £1,675 paid for an unwarranted mile 95N Citroen XM 2.1TD VSX auto estate, and a very high £3,875 for an unwarranted mile 92J Pajero 2.8TD auto, to £4,350 for a 1983 Rolls Shadow with a flat tyre.   Similar in size if not engine capacity was a 94M Mercedes S280 with leather, of course, and a piffling 62,024 miles. It sold for £6,900, which is less than the cheapest new Citroen C3. Its bigger, younger brother, a 38k mile 2000X S600 V12 complete with rear compartment television came through next door and made £34,250 on its way to the next Top Car sale on 20th January.
