  • Corolla build quality+gearbox grind 18 Jan 2004 (Forum)
ve just purchased a Corolla, and it is booked in for a replacement bonnet as the existing one is incorrectly shaped at the edge giving an odd panel gap at the driver?s side wing junction. Part of the dash does not fit correctly (relatively minor). Is the build quality going down hill with this model? I also appear to be grinding second gear occasionally, this occurs when changing up to second with the clutch fully down any one any ideas why this is occurring?
  • VW Polo (98/99) Cutting out Problem! 13 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have a S reg VW Polo (98/99) 1.4 16v which keeps cutting out when slowing down from third gear to second. It usually happens when turning into roads and going round roundabouts and is proving to be quite dangerous.

  • Which engined A4 (choice of 2) 13 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have now decided to get SWMBO the A4 Avant that she has been eyeing up for some time (chiefly because used V40s and Golf Estates are the sme sort of price) and think that I have narrowed it down to 2: P reg 1.9tdi (110 bhp) 60k miles £7.5k S reg 1.8 SE 47k miles £8.5k The diesel being £1k cheaper might swing it for me but would appreciate any thoughts that the BR might have. Mileage that will be covered will not be huge and I anticipate keeping the car for quite/very long time.
  • New road signs, M6 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
New road signs seem to have popped up along the M6, at least between Knutsford and Stoke. They have a number on them, somewhere in the 200's range, and the number counts down (or up depending on direction) in 0.5 increments between signs. They are about 18"x12" atop a 3 foot pole, and is standard motorway blue. South bound there is a letter B below the number, north bound it is A.
  • Prop shaft noise? Honda Civic 13 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Of course I wouldn\'t like to hear any noise, but what are the long term problems associated with the prop shaft? I think they\'re about £300 to replace, but dunno if it\'s worth it when a car is losing value all the time. Jason
  • number plates 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
during a nostalgic moment the other night,my friends and myself were discussing all the old cars we used to own,one chap who has had hundreds can still recall them all by their number plates, which prompted me to recall my fathers old hillman super minx which he had in the late 60's. this old banger ended its life on the council tip, but i was wondering what the reg plate would have been worth today,(in those days plate transfer/selling was virtually unheard of)it was RAF 633,any body care to comment?.
  • driveshaft gaiters (CV boots) 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
It may sound like a daft question, but is it possible to put a new gaiter on an outboard driveshaft joint WITHOUT dismatling the joint(s)? Current problem on the RHS driveshaft of a PUG205 1.8 diesel (88) but(same as GTI) this has an intermediate bearing between inner & outer joints. The manual shows a tool to expand/slide a boot up, but my feeling is you would not be able to stretch the small (driveshaft) end of the boot over the CV joint.
  • Car Keying Vandalism 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
IMHO 85 to 90% of the native British public are genuine decent people but the remaining 10 to 15% are social scum. I raise this issue after my son`s 330Ci was keyed in his local Tesco car park yesterday, and after working hard in a sressful job to buy his dream motor, he is naturally gutted. I question how widespread are these acts of malicious vandalism, and how many other members in the B.R. have suffered similarly.
  • What Diesel? 26 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Diesel cars, I love 'em. I Have recently bought a W reg VW Passat 1.9 S TDI Tiptronic and to me, it's a superb car! I previously owned a Mondeo 1.8 LX TD (manual) and then an Omega 2.5 GLS TD (auto) which was traded in for the VW. What Diesel cars do other people own now & previously?
  • Omega False Alarm 16 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have a n S Reg Omega 2.5 V6 CDX with about 65k on the clock. After a hard Friday's work it is parked and left alone. Then - at about 2pm the next day (give or take an hour) when the sun hits it the alarm triggers.
  • Peugeot 206 Pollen Filter 4 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I recently took my wife\'s 2 year old 206 back to the main dealer for its first bi-annual service. The oil and filter were changed but the air and pollen filters were not. When I asked about these I was told that they did not require replacement.
  • VW Passat pulling left 25 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I was knocked quite hard on the left wing by another motor which made the steering wheel massively out of sink with the column and since then the car has always tracked off to the left unless i constantly hold the wheel to compensate. I have fitted new Michelin\'s since and do not want these to prematurely wear. What mechanical faults can my Passat have developed because of this accident? Can I fix these myself using a trusty Haynes manual and dedication? Many thanks MG
  • BMW 320D Injection Fuel Pump 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My car was out of warranty but BMW agreed to pay 75% of the total cost of £2000. The car was at the BMS dealer for 11 (eleven) weeks! My question\'s are: Is there a known fuel pump problem, would a faulty pump cause others problems or could the damage parts be caused my incorrect fitting of new pump? Thanks
  • The Back Room Poll: membership fee? 7 Apr 2003 (Forum)
This poll arises from the discussion in the thread \"HJ\'s auction reports\". Several contributors suggested we charge a fee for registered membership of The Back Room; others have disagreed. Rather than ask how much people would be prepared to pay, I\'ve decided first to see what proportion of visitors to the BR would be in favour and what proportion against -- in principle.
  • Golfs 28 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The main dealers don\'t seem to have much in the way of used golfs of this type and nor does anyone else for that matter!! Using Autotrader\'s website, I\'m lucky if there is one within 100 miles. I\'ve got a MKiii GTI at the moment and I don\'t remember such a drought when I bought that 3 years ago. Am I missing something????
  • Shafted by congestion charge 10 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Not expressing any opinion as to whether it\'s good or bad. What is UNFAIR is what happened to me tonight. Tried to pay £5 at 9.30PM. Could not get through. Carried on and the phone system would not accept my \"pin\" even though it worked before.
  • Steering fault after new tyres fitted 7 Mar 2003 (Forum)
When I drove from the garage, the car veered to the left when braking. As soon as the brake was released, it drove straight again. It?s a bit like losing control on a patch of ice. The steering wheel doesn?t pull at all. The car drives straight on a flat road. I?m going back to the tyre fitter later today, but not being mechanically minded, does anyone have any suggestions so that I don?
  • Any recommendations? 15 Jan 2003 (Forum)
About to change car after a number of years with a Xantia (yes I know!!) and really do need to go for something that\'s ultra reliable as opposed to looks etc. Its not going to do huge mileage (9K ish year)and most of that will be school run/local stuff. Needs to be capable of taking 4 adults (sometimes 5), hatchback necessary due to dogs.
  • Expensive respray 14 Jan 2003 (Forum)
The paintwork was so badly damaged that the car needed a total respray' Now, I'm 'out of the loop' on the cost of a repray, (I last had a car-Minivan-resprayed in the 60's at a cost of £70.00,) but £3,500 seems a bit steep! Assuming that it isn't a misprint, can any backroomer suggest how you might sandblast a car by throwing sand at it. P.
