Too many decisions.... Buy a car 7 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Perhaps a while can of worms opened. On the size of car considered I'm conscious that a petrol would drink fuel and be slow to lug a bigger car , do tempted by diesel but the concerned about potential for big things to start breaking and get very expensive quickly.... What's people's views? Thanks in advance for any help and apologies for any predictive text errors.... -
Peugeot Boxer 2.5 2001 smoking after belt change 14 Apr 2016 (Forum)
They have sorted the leaks but not the smoke and have now been told it may be the injectors again, i have explained that the van has no power and these type of injectors don't just go like that and they go over time. Well its booked in again tomorrow. I have suggested fuel pump out of sync but was tolt they have checked it three times. Before cambelt change When drove in was a bit smokey on acceleration also on first start up. Now . Smokes like its been on 60 woodbine a day for a 100 years , down on power , drinking diesel like its going out of fashion. -
Peugeot 206 1.4L Look 8v petrol. - Very rough idle on start up!!!!! 14 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I was always told it was the coil pack and no one would do anything (annoying), so I did some research and then changed all 4 fuel injectors myself and now that's solved that issue. But now that issue has been resolved, when starting, whether the engine is cold or at optimum temperature, the car appears to have a misfire for roughly 30 seconds - seems to tie in with the automatic choke. -
Hyundai i40 Tourer - Hyundai i40 mpg? 23 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I drive with my 4 year old in the car and don't exceed 65 mph even on the motorway and always try to get it into 5 th and 6 th gear as soon as possible and only accelerate slowly! I feel a bit let down - any suggestions as I cannot afford to spend £3 k a year on fuel just to do 8 thousand or so miles a year! It has taken all the joy out of a new car and if I honest I feel let down by the salesman who I'm surprised didn't feel the need at any pint to make me aware of this gas guzzling car. -
Renault Master 1998 2.8td - Diesel not starting 15 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I have checked the electrics to the pump. I have cracked the injector nuts while cranking and there is fuel going to all 4. Am I right in assuming that this rules out the immobiliser and stop solenoid being a fault? The van has done a whopping 243,000 miles but I was told it had a recon in it. -
Corsa C (52 reg) starting problems?? 29 May 2014 (Forum)
The worst thing is, occasionally if the car does start, then whilst driving along the car dashboard will sometimes fail and then the speedo, rev counter and fuel guage will not work, also indicators etc fail, although the car will still drive, it will usually come back into life after 10 minutes of driving?? .... you will probably say go and get a diagnostic test done, well i did exactly that at Vauxhall, but they said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and even test drove it and said the same thing and then charged me £50 for priviledge. -
What used car? 4 May 2014 (Forum)
I'm 24, and with the "owning another car" box being ticked, insurance isn't a huge concern. The college is some 26 miles away, all national speed limit and dual carriageway, so fuel economy is a bigger issue. I'm not even bothered if it passes an MOT since I plan to buy at the end of the summer, when I should be able to get one that's MOT'd until July 2015 quite easily. Budget is capped at about £1,000, and I want something that's going to be a bit of fun to make my dirve down Cornish country lanes more interesting. -
Ford Focus 2002 1.6 pet - Ford focus 02 - To change cat or not? 7 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Car is at 100,000 miles Had an emisions test done which showed the lambda at 1.01 which is an MOT pass Since I've had the car i've replaced: cam belt, speed sensor, air/fuel filters Cleaned the idle control valve Drives OK, MPG and power not as good as I would expect but don't really have much experience as my other car is a tuned up mini! Makes a slightly unusual sound but not like its blowing, also I can cover the exhaust with a rag quite easily. -
any - car transporters 13 Oct 2013 (Forum)
He did this job for a few years and has since been on fuel tankers which was a blessing in comparison. I was lucky enough to go on a guided group tour of the Toyota factory once and found it fascinating and will describe this on another post. -

Skoda Octavia 1.2 TSi S - Replacing my Mondeo 1 Aug 2013 (Forum)
So I'm finally replacing my 2002 1.8 petrol Mondeo hatchback. I was generally happy with the car though it had a few problems other than wear items - fuel pump, two springs, other suspension parts, wheel bearings, HT leads, rear calipers. But for an 11 year old car owned for 8 years not too bad. I only do 7000 miles a year so I'm thinking petrol. -
faulty car sold, unhappy with repairs 13 May 2013 (Forum)
They had it for 10 days at a BMW garage (his mates garage basically) and added engine cleaner in the fuel and changed the spark plugs and returned it with 160 miles extra on the clock. They said this had worked, there was no need to remove the gasket and there were no other problems. I told them at the this wouldn't work on direct injection engines and I would get it independently tested. -
Ford Focus - Starting Problems 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
They linked it up to the diagnostic computer to look as to why she was struggling to start, it came up with Crankshaft Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor faults. I also believe did a ECU upgrade to assist with starting issues, is this correct? Also the heater seems to take an awfully long time to get up to temperature, even though the temperature gauge on the engine is up to normal after about 10-15 mins of casual city driving. -
VW Passat 1.9 TDI Estate 11 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I know it is slightly rougher than the newer common rail versions but that means very little to me. I need fuel efficiency over refinement and also a solid lump of an engine too! The two I am looking at in the near future have around 59k on the clock and are from 2008. I have been in a couple of golfs with the same engine, and although quite loud at cold idle, both seemed quite quiet on the move, and with a fair bit of pull too! -
All - EU tyre labelling confusion 31 Oct 2012 (Forum)
The smaller tyre is more heavily deformed under its maximum permitted load and hence has higher rolling resistence. The problem is that this you can't extrapolate this data down to the sort of loads that you normally experience while driving normally. It's a bit like measuring fuel economy at the maximum speed a vehicle is capable of reaching! It doesn't tell you anything meanigful about how the economy of the vehicle at normal road speeds. But this apples to oranges comparison isn't particularly helpful because of the unnecessary variable of load rating that's been thrown into the equation. -
2002 VW GOLF 1.9 PD TDI ASZ - Headgasket!! 22 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Was out doing the normal weekly checks and there is a Light creamy film inside filler neck and creamy sludge on oil cap(Not lots)...None on dipstick... within the last month it has had full service( Oil change & oil filter, fuel filter, air filter pollen ect ect) new cambelt, new waterpump and new hydraulic tentioner. I have not had any white smoke, temperature problems or coolant loss, however I did have coolant change and instantly the coolant turned back to a rusty style color! -
Skoda Fabia Classic (2001) - MOT failure... indication of cost! 26 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Break failures: RBT Park Brake efficiency 15% Parking brake lever has no reserve travel Nearside and offside front suspension has excessive movement at a wishbone pin or bush. Rear (filter) fuel system component leaking. Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort. Parking brake efficiency below requirements. A lot of the above makes no sense to me! -
Citroen Xsara Picasso 2002 - Awful rattley engine noise 9 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Engine response seems fine, no warning lights (one was reset during service) and no loss of power or excessive fuel consumption (it's the not the most economical in any case!) I appreciate it might sound like I'm worrying over nothing, but it is quite intrusive and I worry it's signifies something that needs treating. -
Medium Automatic Required in place of Hybrid. 19 May 2012 (Forum)
Their other car is a Pixo auto - a 4 speed box effort and they are happy with it. They dont seem to be bothered with the fuel economy or the road tax...... -
Volvo V50 - 2.0 petrol (ford engine) misfire/sluggish 7 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Also if you rev it when in neutral it is distinctly rough sounding and feeling. Final thing, fuel economy is poor at 32mpg (it should do 38mpg) I've changed the airfilter (made no difference) and changed sparkplugs (made no difference old ones were good condition) When changing the sparkplugs I noticed that cylinders chambers the spark plugs are in on 1 and 4 were really clean but 2 and 3 were rusty and the coil packs on 2 & 3 had orange/brown dust on them.
