Too many decisions.... Buy a car - Man without a plan

Hi folks,

Looking to buy a car to replace our great little 57reg Fiesta that we've had since brand new and not missed a beat. Reason for upgrade is second child on way and need legroom and boot space which the fiesta didn't provide and our Seat Ibiza ST provides boot space but not leg room (keeping that as the run about though). Also the 1.4 in the Ibiza (non turbo) is far too slow - not looking for sports car performance but the 42 mile round trip to work is a bore.

So decisions:

I'm keen on Mondeo, i40 estate, Avenue, even into Auris/Focus/Leon estates etc but SWMBO prefers SUVs like the Sportage and Tucson but iirc the boot spaces in SUVs aren't as good as our Ibiza ST let alone the card I'm considering?

Anyway if anyone has and suggestions of cars I should consider then please shout up. Budget is about £16k but could stretch to early £20ks if brand new with 0% fiance through a broker to get away from daft "list prices". For the £16k would hope for about a year old to benefit from warranty remaining, and about 10k on clock. Either way, would like Nav and lots of toys.

Then there is the petrol v Diesel question. Perhaps a while can of worms opened. On the size of car considered I'm conscious that a petrol would drink fuel and be slow to lug a bigger car , do tempted by diesel but the concerned about potential for big things to start breaking and get very expensive quickly.... What's people's views?

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies for any predictive text errors....

Unless you buy an enormous clown SUV, a decent estate will provide much better all round space for a young family. Add the Octavia /Superb to your list, I doubt you'll find any better. Do you actually need 4wd and the dismal fuel consumption of an SUV for the use the car will get? If you're keeping the car several years, one of the Japanes petrol estates would be a better bet such as Mazda 6, Avensis.

Second what 'bazza' says. If you want 4x4 there is a Skoda Octavia estate version which would prove more economical than an oversize SUV...

Octavia Estate 1.4 TSi - ticks virtually all your boxes, only the higher seat position for SWMBO is missing

Would you consider a Berlingo or it's Peugeot stable mate?

Tons of loadspace and legroom. Sliding doors a huge bonus when getting kids in and out. The current 1.6 8valve diesel is pretty well bomb proof provided service intervals and oil specs are strictly followed. You also doing the miles and driving types to keep the DPF clean but that will apply to any modern diesel.

Never driven a petrol version so no idea how it goes.

Obviously no sports car but the 115PS diesel version has enough poke for A road overtakes and is no slouch even with 1200kg of caravan attached.

For your budget you could go for new but that would add the complication of an adblu emissions set up. Thin that ws introduced on a facelift around 18months ago.

For your budget I'd be looking at a late, low mileage Honda Civic Estate with the 1.6 diesel. Strong, well made, long lasting, spacious and you'll not find anything to beat it regarding real world economy or a CRV if you can find a 1.6 diesel 2wd with reasonable mileage for £16k.

We've had a CRV 1.6 SE for two years and it's been a brilliant big family wagon. Huge space and averages 56mpg without driving like a nun.

Thanks for all the responses guys, we've been out for a look at options today.

Answers / responses:

1. Unfortunately we've not fans of French cars so have ruled out Citroen and Peugeot, rightly or wrongly.

2. I was keen on the Octavia Estate suggested but the wife really isn't keen on the look of it, i've got to be honest it really does play up to its "old man" image unless you extend to vRS spec, so looks like that may be out.

3. We did look at the Civic but I find it really marmite in terms of looks and that too didn't float our boat.

So what did we see that we liked - the i40 SE Nav 1.7 CRDi, the Mazda6 SE Sport Nav (unfortunately out of our price range new and I wouldn't want this in 2.2d second hand, and from the left-field - the Honda HR-V although this is probably too small in the boot department and probably too expensive too being brand new.

Haven't seen the Mondeo (saloon or estate) or Focus estate in the flesh yet so still an option.

Unless any other options present themselves then I think the i40 is likely to get the vote.....

Any comments on the above or other suggestions then please do shout up.

Of the preferred options I'd favour the i40 1.7. It's a nice big wagon and I haven't heard of any major failures unlike the latest 2.2 Mazda diesels that seem to be problem prone. Despite what you'll be told you need a full dealer history to retain the excellent 5yr unlimited mileage warranty so reject any without it. It's next to impossible to claim without it.

The 1.6 PSA in some Mondeo models is notoriously troublesome too though it's said later engines are better I've seen too many with very early turbo failure and several cases of total engine loss at very low mileages to recommend anything with it fitted. Shame, it's a lovely big car otherwise. Even the 2.0 isn't up to scratch. They tend to eat DMF's by 70k which is a £1000 plus job.

HRV seems like a nice enough thing, I've sat in one and driven the new Jazz it's based on (which was pleasant enough) and can certainly vouch for the 1.6 DTec engine in our CRV but I've yet to drive one. The 1.5 petrol is said to be a bit gutless and they're still expensive being so new. Civic makes more sense but if you don't like the look...

It's families with needs like yours that have made the crossover/SUV so popular. They don't want a hulking great 4x4 but they do want space and the high seating position, which allows for a perception of more room in the rear (you don't need to stretch your legs so far forward).

As you've liked your Fiesta, the Ford C-Max should be high on your list, or the Nissan Qashqai (ignore the Juke - not much room inside and the looks are for most people on the wrong side of Marmite).

If you prefer an ordinary estate, I'm sure the i40 will do nicely, but you could also look at the Focus - more of them around to choose from if you're buying secondhand.

What about a Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid?

At one year old, these are in your price braket. It's an SUV so your wife would be happy.

It has a range on the electric charge of 32 miles so making the trip to work a challenge to get as possible before the petrol engine kicks in.

Would make a lot of sense if you could recharge it during the day at work.

Just a thought...
