The trunkating of mechanical adventures 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
You could possibly drive around the world in some cars now without opening the bonnet. The adventure would all be external to the actual car. But there was (at least in memory) a certain pleasure in the ultra fine detail of the car itself. -
Head gaskets are they now weaker? 6 Nov 2009 (Forum)
New thermostat and 22,000 miles later no signs of any head gasket failure, his engine is the Ford Endura which is an iron kent block. So why do head gasket failures seem so common now? Is that people are just driving their cars with the needle in the red without realising the water pump has failed or something? -
Nissan Qashqai (2007 - ) - My QQ is OK 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I picked up my QQ 1.5 Pure Drive DCI Accenta in early August this year and have clocked nearly 3000 miles and so far not had any probs. 6 gears took a little bit of getting used to but soon got the hang of it. 6th gear 80mph all day if it could and approx 49 mpg ain't at all bad for the size of the car. -

Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 02 1.2 ECU needs repairing 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've got a 2002 easytronic Corsa (u can drive manual or auto) and I've had the flashing 'F' happen periodically meaning I can't start the car when this happens. First had the fault codes read by a local garage and they couldn't find anything (this was Tuesday) and they said that it was probably a fluke, and Tuesday nite, on attempting to go home from being out - I couldn't start the car again. -
What's your favourite body style? 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
As, well.... boring..... as the estates but less useful really. I understand small hatchbacks. Useful, cheap, often fun to drive. Large hatchbacks can be OK but why not have an estate? They do more. I've had MPVs. Astonishingly practical but if you have an ounce of enthusiasm about driving they will ultimately disappoint. -
MPG - How much is your banger costing you? 20 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've done the stats for my Corsa and I am getting 42mpg which is calculated from a pure city run sample. I do like to rev it a bit but I do avoid braking and drive very smoothly which is why I am probably getting a good MPG rate. My dad also drives smoothly but gets 12mpg less (his engine has lots of problems). So its all very well saying my banger costs me £500 a year in repairs (dads Fiesta) which is a lot cheaper than buying a new car but what about the fuel costs? -
advice needed on neighbours disabled parking bay? 19 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Hi All i awoke up this morning, took a yawn as i drew back my curtains only to find that a disabled parking bay has been placed outside my neighbours house.not a problem BUT it overlaps my property which i privately own.Now they do have a drive , as do i,but they choose to park their caravan on it! i have contact the relevant peeps about this and they say they are not removing it as the occupational therapist has suggested they have it.i have tried to find out about the laws of the location of these such bays but can not find out whether they are legally allowed to use part of my parking area in front of MY house or is it that the road is simply the councils property and that they can do what they want with it. i know that they have had this done in spite as they like to have both of their cars in front of their house without having to park in front of their own drive with a caravan on it.....in case of an emergancy holiday i persume ;o) now i dont like to argue over such things as parking spaces but this has made me so cross to use part of my parking outside my house where my hubby parks his van and is now unable to do so because they are greedy! -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 brake problem 17 May 2009 (Forum)
It gets that bad sometimes it makes the whole car vibrate. Can someone give me some sort of clue. Could it be a drive shaft ,or wheel bearing, or something as the passenger side drive shaft has been clonking for about 14,000 miles now. It only makes a noise when suddenly putting the accelerator down in 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear; not 1st and 2nd gear. -
SAAB 9-3 (1998 - 2002) - 99 2.0 Intermittent Clutch/Gearbox problem 8 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, Have just bought the above car and overall it's great. However after 5 days driving and a reasonable 120 mile run, it has developed a problem selecting gears. The fault is intermittent and either fully present or not at all. Fault is only present just after start up. What happens is I start the car but then cannot select any gears - the lever will simply not shift to any position, as if no clutch operation at all. -
Diesel gear change with DMF in mind 7 May 2009 (Forum)
Mine has shift lights that do actually come on at 2k. Usually takes me down to 1.5k for the next gear. This got me thinking, people drive like this all the time, low revs and after reading about DMF failure and someone suggesting lugging from low down puts big stress on the DMF, does it? Is 1.5k really too low to drive like that all the time? -
Need something v.cheap, powerful and economical! 7 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi there, I currently drive a VW Golf Gti 16v mk3 with 100,000 miles on it. The thing is bomb proof and a good mix of performance and comfort. With 150bhp and weighing only 1150kg its not as quick as modern hot hatches but its no slow coach! -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Buying new car this W/E last min advice! 5 May 2009 (Forum)
Dynamique, this time it's the dCi 105 bhp diesel, again low miles and about 6.5K. Obviously we have to drive them both. The only thing I'm woried about in the focus is the horror stories re road/tyre noise. The Megane, the engine sounds a cracker, but inevitably I'm worried about reliability. It's obviously at 2007 a face-lift model and I've read that the reliability is much improved. -
Cars are too good for most of us now. 24 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Cars are too good for most of us now. Modern diesels are fitted with particulate filters that only work properly if you drive the car at moderate speeds at least part of the time. If you crawl pathetically about mimser-style and never let the thing breathe, it clogs up and costs you money and makes you whinge about it. But it's your damn fault. -
Honda CR-V III (2007 - ) - Michelin Tyres 13 Apr 2009 (Forum)
In fact, I'm considering trying the pressures at 28psi all round to see if this makes any difference to the ride and drive, in general. Has anyone any experience of this problem with the Honda CRV (Sport) Petrol Automatic in particular, or the Michelin tyres fitted, as quoted above, please. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - Warranty claim - Ford wriggling 23 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Just been speaking to my dad, his almost two year old Fiesta 1.4TDCi has done 56,000 miles as a driving school car. He has noticed when the car warms up gearchage becomes difficult, especially going through the neutral 'gate'. It will disengage gear OK, spring to neutral then it requires a real push to get it through neutral before it goes into the next gear with no problem. -
is my car registered? 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
There is now scam here - this was a merc main dealer, so just cockup, not conspiracy. However, I'm now worried about if I should actually be driving the car. Has anyone any experience of these matters? -

BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 05 2.0 diesel heavy clutch pedal 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi, Its been 9 months now since i own this 2005 BMW 320 CD. 74K Genunine Milage...perfect drive...excellent handling..in short its fun to drive... The only thing I am not happy about is the clutch paddle!!...its heavy.....fews days back I drove a 54 Plate Passat 1.9 TDI... 6 speed manual...also drove an Audi A4..2.0 TDI with 6 Speed manual transmission...if I compare these VW clutches with my BMW....they are very soft and smooth...I even got my car Inspected by BMW dealership in Surrey and they said that 'working' of my clutch is fine...i never said that i have some issues with the working of the clutch..it works fine....gears are engaging fine...no vibration but the paddle is HEAVY!...
