I'm not really sure whether this will be viewed as technical or not, so please bear with me and move if appropriate.

I filled up for the first time last night, and since then I have been unable to properly replace the 'lid' that holds the petrol in; have had to drive round with it just sort of balanced in there. Is there a knack to replacing this? I'm loathe to really force it in case I do some damage.

One thing that is worth doing with Ford locks (once you can get it moving!) is to keep them well oiled. The flimsy thin section keys don't stand much abuse.

Does the mechanism move freely when you hold just the cap in your hand and twist the key?

On these there is a knack- when you took it off did it click just before it came off? If so you need to put it on and turn the key clockwise until it clicks again.

Thank you to Number Cruncher and Corsa Driver. I take what you say about maybe oiling, and stuff like that - my problem at the moment is that I cannot actually get the petrol cap on, at all, so it's not going on so far as I need to turn the key and lock it.

When I took it off, to be perfectly honest I don't remember whether it clicked or not. But my main job for now is just getting in into the right place, before even attempting key-turning.

Would be grateful for any more hints, maybe I am just being pathetic but I think I really need to know how to sort this.

Thanks to anyone in advance.

I will be putting this across to Discussion - more for the wider audience than anything else.

Ah, I think I understand your question now.

When you took the cap off, did you twist the key back to its initial locked position before pulling your key out? (Like you can on an Astra, which has a freewheeling type of lock)

What I think you need to do, is put your key back in, and twist - as you did to undo it. Then, put the cap, with the key still in, into the stub of the petrol pipe. Then, turn the key back. At this point, the cap should be on and locked, and you can then withdraw your key.

Point by point

Put key in to cap
turn to unlock (can't remember the direction)
take cap and keys out - do not turn the key
fill up
put the cap back into place
turn key to lock
take key out

I hope this helps,

Ford filler caps are difficult unless you are used to them. I doubt there's anything wrong with it.

To Unlock; Insert key, turn in appropriate direction.

To Lock; Line the contacts up in the right place, then turn the key 180deg in the appropriate direction. It may not 'feel' like it has locked, but remove the key and you'll see that in fact it is secure.

Certainly this is true of a 96' Fiesta and 95' Escort which i have owned, and i suspect yours will be the same.

Same for 1986 and 1991 Fiesta. Dont know about Escorts, my 1973 Escort didnt have a locking petrol cap (just a painted twist on/off one).

Vman, I think your life-expectancy just got shorter. In fact, comments like that may make you dangerously eligible for a Darwin award. People will start the story with "did you hear about the mad bloke who dissed HF?"...

Really really sorry Steve, and thanks for coming. And extra sorry about the looks from neighbours. Yup it is the white Fiesta, if you're about at all tomorow then I would be really grateful for a visit. Can only apologise again and say thanks again for trying to help me - it is really appreciated.

Nice to see they keep a look out..I was surprised though that I didnt see any evidence of a petrol leak.Which I would have expected to see if the cap wasnt sealing correctly..Didnt even smell petrol which you would if cap not sealing. If you are about around 10.00ish tomorrow I can pop in.But have to pick the wife up from Wembley tomorrow (gone to the 70`s concert)and then away for the day.Back late.

Well there you go HF. I had a white mark 4 too. Quite obviously you're very discerning when it comes to choosing cars.

Mark 4, is it? Adam I don't think I want to ask why you no longer have the car. I am, however, very definitely falling in love.

Big thanks to Steve, who popped round this morning.Petrol cap thing is not a problem, it's actually normal (unlike anything else in my household). Very grateful for this, and Steve seemed to think the car is a nice one so I am even more grateful!

No no HF - nothing like that. Things change. I really like big cars and started looking after a year. We actually sold the Fiesta back to the person we bought it off who gave it to his wife and it's still going well with no problems. (The person is my Dad's mate).

Re the petrol cap thing, even though it's alright, mine did perish. I started to smell petrol but couldn't locate anything and it was the faintest whiff every so often. Then, completely uncharacteristically, I let the car get dirty. It because obvious what the culprit was when I saw petrol marks around the cap on the white paint!

I bought a new locking cap for a fiver and all was well. The original petrol cap was a little tricky. I found you could turn it both ways to lock it into place but then you'd have to fiddle for ages with the lock.

Thinking back now, I can't think of a single problem I had on that Fiesta that wasn't caused by myself apart from the petrol cap. And I put over 15,000 on it.And it was older than yours. (Yes it's a Mark 4 by the way)

In any event, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it. If you've got any (minor!) problems, then post away. I may have had them myself and fixed them with the expert help of the lads here. Failing that, then the people who really know what they're on about will be able to help!

Happy Motoring

Thanks for that, Adam - I am sure I will be back before too long with queries - and it's good to know you're about, with a bit of experience, to help. And, like you say, it's great to have the panel of experts here too!

Off for a drive now...

I can remember a time when this wouldn't have been a problem at all, you would just hand the keys to the freindly operative and say
I'll have 9.09 litres please.
Fiesta petrol thing - HF
Before my time - but surely in those days it would have been gallons (or maybe pints in my case), not litres?

As an afterthought, and continuing car/driving stuff, Renault was booked in to be scrapped today - and then I lost the keys. Tomorrow, I promise.
