hi,
after about half an hours driving my clutch gets very stiff to push down.
if you only press it once its really bad, but if you press it again its gets slightly less stiff, and again pretty normal.
but leave it 30 seconds its very stiff again.
and ideas? just i can't afford a new clutch (not that it should be that)

If it's the same as the problem on the Mondeo Mark 2 it's due to the clutch slave cylinder getting hot after driving for a while. The heat probably causes the seals to swell slightly so causing them to stick. One you've operated the clutch once they've been freshly lubricated with hydraulic fluid, so the clutch becomes easier to operate until it's been left for the same cycle to occur again. Mine used to do this when the car was newer, but now the effect has largely gone away. This didn't happen with cable operated clutches, which, so I believe, some earlier Mondeo's had.
I don't think there's a cure, so learn to live with it. Even if you has a new clutch slave cylinder fitted, which involves as much work as fitting a new clutch, the replacement would behave in exactly the same way!

no, that's not want i want to hear.
its a mk3 though so has anyone got any ideas off the mk3?
|
|
My 01 mk3 used to do it up until it reached about 45K, it never does it now. My 95 Mk1 never did it though, but it had 38k on the clock when I got it, so I'd probably go along with what Galaxy says on this.

Since this is a hydraulic clutch it is most likely a slave cylinder fault. It is unlikely to be the clutch pressure plate. Sadly, any investigation/remedy is going to need the gearbox removing because the slave cylinder is located inside the bellhousing. It won't be a cheap job....

|
kith, was it the exact same fault?
|
|
My 2004/18k Mondeo TDCi shows the same symptoms. The first time the clutch is depressed after a long run, it is stiff. OK from cold and for subsequent depresses. So you're not alone.

Yes, stiff to press after a long motorway stretch.
|
|
My Mk3 TDCi clutch is occasionally heavy on the first press after a long high speed motoring run. The 1.8 Focus I had previously also exhibited the same behaviour and it seems to be a characteristic of the hydraulic clutch used.

gents,
after the long drive you press it its stiff then what about after that? not comeback or continues to be stiff if left for say 30 secs- a minute then pressed again

I think they have answered that "The first time the clutch is depressed after a long run", "first press" etc.

no you don't understand, its after half an hours drive not just after long drive, and after half hour it keeps on coming back after being left for a few minutes

i'm not to pleased
after having an issue where the clutch would become stiff after the car has warmed up (fine when cold) the ford dealer have informed me it needs an new clutch, he mentioned something about a ball bearing, and it didn't need a new fly wheel.
make any sense???
anyway £550 for a 51 and 23k
i'm planning on writing to ford with the sentce somewhere in my piece "designed for living engineered to last"
whats my chances

he mentioned something about a ball bearing,
He probably meant the clutch release bearing.
|
that was it release bearing.
he did mention new clutch as well i'm sure i just though that was perhaps a bit cheap!!!
for that and clutch, either way im writing to ford
