Opinion: Keep your friends close and your mechanics closer 16 Aug 2016 (News)
, I popped the bonnet up for no other reason than to show other impatient motorists that I had broken down, and had not just parked ignorantly. And yet again, the bonnet had that magnetic pull, as from nowhere a blue Discovery with flashing beacons on it pulled up on the verge. Behind the wheel was Dean, a local mobile mechanic and Land Rover nut. -

Is Drive it Day successful in getting the message across? 28 Apr 2014 (News)
The fact that so many well-maintained, nicely presented classic cars don't get driven quickly enough. That's fine, each to their own, but it really does make my teeth itch seeing classic cars holding up the moderns - when after all, we can pretty much hold our own on the roads. Don't believe me? I was following a 1930s roadster yesterday that was happily capable of bowling along the A-roads quite happily at 60mph. -

The Mazda is the better vehicle, but the KIA has the better warranty. Pulling out the stops I have today received a PCN for an "alleged parking contravention; stopped on a pedestrian crossing or crossing area marked by zigzags." I admit that I paused for a matter of seconds when I dropped my wife off at the local town centre. The video evidence from the Council shows my front wheels only in the zig-zag zone. The fine is £55 if paid within 28 days or £110 thereafter, which seems a bit steep and nothing more than a money-making exercise and another "nail in the coffin" of our local shopping centre. -

By 2013, large-scale manufacturers must be able to show that the average emissions of the cars they produce are less than 130g/km CO2. Or they will get fined. So the sudden proliferation of tax-free and Congestion Charge exempt models under 100g/km is not out of altruism by the manufacturers. It’s to avoid a fine. -

NC, via email If you find it distressing, pay up so it goes away. Chip shop owner Barry Beavis appealed against just such a private parking penalty and the Law Lords in the Court of Appeal spent two months deliberating as to whether or not Parking Eye could enforce contractual penalties of this type. The ruling announced on 23 rd April is that parking enforcement agencies can enforce reasonable penalties against drivers as a “commercially justified deterrent” as long as the charges (£85 in this case) are not “not extravagant or unconscionable”. -

Jargon Buster: Dash cams 22 Mar 2016 (News)
Some cameras record in extremely high resolutions, though usually at lower frame rates. These give extreme clarity, meaning it's easier to pick out fine details in footage. Unfortunately, file sizes are higher in 4K, so a larger memory card is needed. Auto on/off – This function allows a dash camera to turn on when the car ignition is on. -

Some insurers capture the amount of points received for a specific conviction and also the level of fine received, and can load/decline cover based on the information. Vehicle Usage Who will use it? An independent witness saw the incident and gave me the van's licence plate. The van's telematics show that it was on the street on which my car was parked at the time of the incident. The driver denied involvement and the insurance company rejected a claim because, while the witness described the vehicle as a van and the driver as male, he did not get the van model and his estimate of the driver's age was out. -
