  • Ducati left on the grid 21 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Removed both spark plugs and they were virtually as new due to a full service he had before laying it up. Petrol was on the plugs which proved that fuel was getting there and the spark plugs gave a spark (although it wasn’t the big fat one I see on cars) when connected to the leads and spinning the motor over. No joy but knowing nothing about motor bikes called at the motor bike centre and asked their advice.
  • Buying 4x4 for export to Sri Lanka 23 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Equally, if plans change, or he realises that he got his sums wrong, it is ideal for him to sell in the UK, without huge loss, on departure at end of contract. Again, many thanks for helping him fuel the decision making process. /Steve
  • Golf mk3 cuts out after going through puddles 5 Mar 2002 (Forum)
It's not the leads (replaced) or dist. cap as far as I (or the garage) can tell. I thought perhaps a short in the fuel pump (happened to my Dad's Audi once), but the pump is mounted on top of the tank, and I can't see how it could get wet. The garage replaced an engine management control switch, and tidied up some frayed wiring, but that didn't work.
  • Freelanders/Landrover 25 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Obviously it was the Christmas holiday period so they could not work on the car for a while but when they contacted me a couple of weeks later they said they did not know what was wrong so they were going to fit a new engine! After another couple of weeks they said they were still waiting for fuel injectors. After 7 weeks they said I could pick up the car however there was a different noise plus the interior of the car looked and smelt as though the mechanics had been using it for their lunch breaks!!
  • Vauxhall Cav 2.0 problems 13 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Usually its while ideling, but sometimes happens while driving. It never happens if Im travelling over, say, 35 mph, and seems to be worse when the fuel level is below 1/4. I've taken it to Vauxhall, and they said it needed new idle air control valve, throttle body mod, oil sump on the breather hose etc, so Ive had it all done and its still the same.
  • Car for missus 8 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Has anyone any views on something like a nice GT6 or MGB GT for occasional / motorway commuting use? If well maintained I think the lack of fuel injection, ABS, catalytic converters etc should be a bonus. No road tax would be nice as well. Are Cinqecentos good sellers privately? It's a black, base model, L reg, 55k. I'd like to think we'd get £1500 for it, but think £1000 - £1200 is likely.
  • Company Car <£20k Help 30 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Must haves: fab seats with lumbar adjust due to severe & recurrent back problem. Great long distance comfort. Power Would like: decentish fuel economy as I have to pay my own, but being young I am prepared to downgrade this if I can have something really hooliganlike for once. Space for cramming in mates & parents on occasion Not bothered: Residuals & servicing costs etc.
  • Fiat Doblo diesel - fuel prices 19 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Have just received an email from a friend on the vexed subject of fuel prices. It suggests a way for buyers to bring effective pressure to bear on the sellers, rather than leaving them to control the market place. I am copying the whole email, and urge all consumers to support this initiative. ============================== From: Geoffrey Still To: Wendy Ashcroft ; John and Helen Bardsley ; Sally Barker-Dodds ; Colin Bendel ; Guy and Jean Boney ; Pat & Peter Bunch ; Philip/Sue Conway ; Robert and Morella Cottam ; Sarah Duncan ; Neil & Sarah Duncan ; Susie Evetts ; Derek Pulford/Susie Evetts ; Linda Farbrother ; David/Venetia Fellowes ; Thomas/Sarah Floyd ; David Gaunt ; John/Shirley Gould ; Richard and Mindy Hawkins ; Kirsten Hopkins ; John/Anne Isherwood ; Jill and Neil Jenkinson ; Simon/Lynn Lamb ; Nicky Levitt ; Sally Milligan ; Lynne Nicholls ; Steve/Lynne Nicholls ; Grahame Nicholson ; Grahame/Charlotte Nicholson ; Richard/Rosemary Plincke ; Alex Price ; Holly Price ; Tegid and Jane Pugh ; Chris Quayle (and Ashcrofts) ; Sophie/Hugo Richardson ; Hugo/Sophie Richardson ; The Lady Rollo ; Jamie Rollo ; Sophie Rollo ; Linda/Mike Russell-Smith ; Roger Salvetti ; Bridget ; Geoff and Margie Smart ; Phyllida Stanley ; Hazel Still ; Geoffrey Still ; Carol Thelwell ; Susan (Welch) Thomas ; Mark Thomas ; Robin/Leila Tillett ; Olivia Tufnell ; Simon Tufnell ; Roger/Kathy Venne ; Peter/Annie Walker ; David and Meriel Walton ; Chris Whittall ; Rebecca Whitworth ; Michael Widen ; Sir Philip Williams ; Tina Foley Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 1:03 PM Subject: Fw: Petrol Prices = remember this.
  • Zafira 1.6 2007 - Nightmare trader/mechanics- Zafira 26 Apr 2018 (Forum)
They told me that he didnt feel anything in the clutch when testing the clutch so he said it was probably the pedal spring and a bit of tough luck. Then I asked if the valve had something to do with the fuel gauge as I had barely any fuel left and I had left it half way when dropping it off. He said that he had "not noticed anything about the clutch clicking when testing it out" and he had "noticed the range - refuel message when he was driving it about.
  • 2003 Peugeot 307 gxl auto h/b petrol - social financial emotional affects of car repairs 19 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Three weeks ago I had my 2003 Peugeot 307 gxl h/b petrol towed to a nearby garage because it wouldn't fire up. The garage owner replaced fuel pump and sensor in a matter of a week, car still refused to start. The second week I telephoned, mentioned I was concerned about the repair prices. He agreed and went on to say it could be the ECU OR BCM.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.6tdci Titanium - Cat C repaired car - major issues, any advice 28 Jun 2012 (Forum)
The guys at the garage said that this car had obviously been involved in quite a heavy front end impact. They also said that the cambelt had probably snapped due to the mis-alignment of the belt on the fuel and cam pulleys casued by a shift to the engine (probably upon collision) Ford have quoted £5,400 for a replacement engine and fuel pump to be fitted and just over £2,000 for bodywork repairs (although I admit I thinksome of this is unneccassary).
  • Toyota Auris HSD - My New Car 16 Dec 2011 (Forum)
However, despite the size of the car there seem to be few cubbyholes and one big beef is that there is no digital readout regarding speed so I do occasionally find that I am travelling probably slower than the driver behind would like as I obsess about fuel consumption. I confess that I have not yet consumed the manual so there may be a setting that allows digital readout... Of course, I miss the keyless entry but the car does have push button start so sort-of half there.
  • Big cars: further to fall? And what would YOU do? 22 Oct 2008 (Forum)
So my four years since then have cost me about £8,000, in which time the car has needed nothing but fuel, tyres and routine service items. So far, so good. Life has moved on, and the S60 has ceded the role of family wagon to our new Toyota Verso. Its main purpose now is to get me down the M40 and back on my unfeasibly long journey to work.
  • Mondeo running problems 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, I have a Mondeo 1.8 TD (L Registration), which was until recently running fine. I was low on fuel a couple of Saturdays ago (Just on the red) so I put £20.00 worth of diesel in from Tesco. I drove home (approximately 20 miles) and it ran fine. I did not use the car again until the Monday morning when I drove it to friends (about 3 miles away.)
  • help! big problems with 306 HDI engine 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I've got some questions about this: What is the significance of the little embossed markings on the camshaft pulley, which looks like this: \ . / Does the fuel pump, which is has a sproket, require timing? Autodata states that it doesn't. Also, on the fuel pump sproket, what is the significance of the embossed 'capsule' shape? I know this post is very long winded, I just wanted to make sure whoever reads this knows what has been done.
  • Renault Austral - Vehicle Rejection Issue 27 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I purchased a new Renault Austral early 2024 on PCP. For the first year, other than a niggle with a fuel gauge issue, the car was amazing. Things changed a few days after the cars first service with the car having now broken down four times since then, in each case with the car being totally immobilised, and have resulted in the car being at the dealership for many months since January.
  • Hyundai Kona - Mild Hybrid Wierdness 13 Nov 2023 (Forum)
The engine then switched off when the car was doing about 10mph and remained off until the clutch was dropped. All this didn't seem to have achieved much in terms of better fuel economy - the mid 40s MPG was very similar to what I've seen in similarly sized normal petrol cars. Are other mild hybrids like this, or is this something specific to Hyundai?
  • Volvo XC90 - Volvo high pressure diesel pump failure 26 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Moving forward: I understand that this is very critical fail and simple exchange of pump wont fix the problem (something about micro-particles within the fuel system as the result of erasure of moving pump components), am I right to be worried?     Would You consider to send failed pump to specialised centre for expertise (if such kind of expertise exists)?
  • 1.4 TSI CAXA 122hp Scirocco 2010 - Wavy acceleration and a rough, shaky idle 24 Sep 2023 (Forum)
I bought a new one, reset the ECU and started the car, it idled smooth for a few minutes then went back to its old ways, as if the ECU relearned something based off the data it got from the new sensor. Engine idles at 640 RPM (Is that normal?) and fuel pressure seems normal at 50.26 bar. Charting boost pressure on full boost i can see the boost pressure going in waves in sync with what i can hear from the car. Car throws 0 codes and even a VW dealership couldn't figure out whats wrong.
  • 2009 Piaggio Porter-petrol smell+starting problem 28 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Just to be clear, this is not the example I was asking about a month or so about with the newer Multi-Fuel engine, this is the Daihatsu/Toyota 1.3 engine (found one not too far from home and decided to go for it).  First potential problem is the smell of petrol but with no apparent leakage, any thoughts from the learned collective?
