Just had an Interesting time in the works owned L200 pickup, Does get used on construction site tracks so quite a rough life. bought new by the company and now just over a year old with 12000 miles.  coming up to a security gate down a hill at around 20 mph (site limit) tried to brake and foot goes to the floor. - pump the brakes and there was no resistance - pulled hard on the handbrake which comes straight up with a bang from the rear of the car.
  • Bilt Hamber Rust Converter/Protection Wax - Which? 4 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Hi all, I have a very small amount of surface corrosion starting on the inside lip of my rear wheel arch, just on the edge, where presumably the original paint wasn't so thick, or wasnt applied well.. At the moment its just surface and  not visibe from standing  outisde the car (you have to look inside the arch) , and doesn't appear to be coming through from the inside, so I just wanted to do some touching in and rust-killing and reproofing as its not a big enough are to warrant a bodyshop (and its an old but otherwise mint condition car) I'm wanting to rub it down and kill the surface just  before painting with some smoothrite, and then putting some rustproofing wax on the entire area.
  • Parking fine whilst on holiday in Jersey 23 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Hot footed it round to the parking penalty office to appeal in person, to be told "there's your problem, the blue badge expired in 2015" Astonished to find we were in fact displaying the old badge. After a minute of head scratching, I realised my stupid mistake: In order to park the car at Luton airport we were advised to take a photocopy of the current blue badge. Tick. Guess where the 2018 badge is?
  • small or medium hatchback 17 Dec 2016 (Forum)
This is probably the impossible dream Time to change our car again.. Looking for a stylish hatchback or maybe saloon with good mpg and fastish( ie as opposed to slowish ...0-60 11sec or less ) ..and all for under £3000 We have sort of drawn up a short list...the obvious diesels Golf ,Audi,Leon,Focus,Civic, I30, Mazda3 ...now before the petrol brigade bang on about diesel vs petrol I have to say ouf of the last 5 cars/4x4's we have had the diesels have been the most economical, most reliable...I even have for our dog an old astra 1.7dti van with 225,000 miles on the clock and its brilliant, never goes wrong, 60mpg ...as far as I understand as long as the diesel has been well maintained, regular oil, serviced etc it should be fine .anyway I digress..is there really any different between the ones I have listed in terms of reliability etc...
  • Mk1 Golf cam noise 7 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hi everyone, long time no post. I got buried under a mountain of dubious old cars and have only just emerged. Anyway... Mk1 Golf GTI, 1588cc, 83,000 miles, solid (i.e. non-hydraulic) cam followers. When I bought the car, the cam belt was too tight (whining noise) so I slackened the tension slightly.

  • Hyundai Santa Fe - Private Vehicle with Blue lights -disabled child 24 Dec 2015 (Forum)
Hi Everyone Just wondering what the stance is on this? I have a Tracheostomy Ventilated 14 month old baby who we have to transport to appointments etc and has the potential to go into respiratory arrest at any point. For this reason I have purchased but not fitted yet some blue strobe lights.  The reason for this is not to cut through red lights etc just to carve my way through traffic in the event he stops breathing whilst we are in the car.
  • Oil Use - Nissan Primera 19 Oct 2015 (Forum)
The only thing I can see is black dry soot on the inside of the tailpipe- I don't know how significant it is - my wife's Clio is less than 6 months old and it has soot inside the tailpipe as well. When I first spoke to the dealer - they said it was unheard of for Nissans to use this much oil. The only other thing is that after I bought the car - I discovered a receipt for a head gasket replacement in the documentation (My fault for not checking thoroughly enough).

  • Vauxhall Astra H - Vauxhall 1.6 Ecotec engine failure 27 Feb 2015 (Forum)
The engine in my example was in the 63k miles bracket and just on 7 years old but if you have this engine fitted, and it's generic across the Vauxhall range as well as other marques, then get it checked.  Since then I have heard of two further failures of this engine, one of which was in a Zafira.
  • Peugeot 106 1.4 XR - 1997 - Front RHS brake binding - help required! 4 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I recently changed the driveshafts on my R-reg 106, and found upon driving the car for the first time that the front right brake was binding heavily, with the inner (acting) pad pressed against the disc. The old driveshafts were knackered and had lost their 'spring', so I think the new ones are acting on the hub a bit more.
  • Selling a Registration Number - Costs & Hassle ? 3 Jan 2015 (Forum)
My question is, how would I go about selling it once I found an interested buyer , and can i get a new number (any number, preferably an anonymous T reg number) and what would that cost me.   Or might it be easier to do once this 15 year old car is ready to scrap ? Just to be clear, I am not interested in anuy net expenditure to change my number, only interested if there is a profit to be made. Any advise on the costs and hassle involved and any experiences had would be welcome.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Blown head gasket 26 Jun 2014 (Forum)
The head gasket on my 54 reg, 53k miles 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa has 'blown' after the engine overheating due to a water pipe coming loose. I have the car under a third party warranty company, which came with the car from the dealership I bought it from. The initial quote I received from my local garage was around £100 for new spark plugs, oil filters etc, as warranty will cover the head gasket and all of the labour.
  • Kia Cee'd vs Astra vs Focus vs anything else - Buying used mid-size diesel estate: which is best 2 Feb 2014 (Forum)
He is considering these 1) Kia Cee'd SW 1.6 CRD 2 or 3 (either 89 or 113bhp) 2010 facelifted model 2) Focus 1.6 Estate TDCi Zetec 110bhp  2009/10 model 3) Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTi 110bhp (2009/10 model, NOT the new Sports Tourer model) He will be buying a car with about 60-80,000 miles on it and wants to keep it for several years. Any thoughts on the car which will provide the most painless ownership experience? My son says he is not a petrolhead and doesn't care about driving feel.
  • What a spanner 26 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Why not just take responsibility?' as she's sat on her bike blocking me from getting out of my car. Me: 'For the last time It wasn't me now get out of my way.' Then she just stormed off in a huff, bleating about 'b***** car drivers.' As she wandered off I called after her 'apology accepted!'
  • Lexus 200D versus Lexus CT200h - Is it worth buying a hybrid 11 Jun 2013 (Forum)
We live in a rural area and have 2 cars : a 1L Yaris for short journeys and a 6 year old Lexus 200D for longer journeys.  We get ~46mpg from the Lexus (on the meter). I am thinking of changing the Lexus for a CT200h but I'm not sure that this will give me any fuel savings.
  • VW Passat TD 2003 PD 130 Estate - Opinion about a quote 28 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Our old Passat (190k) is getting rrr. older and need few bit and bobs to get her through the MOT and she need a full service (every 20k miles we do this). We have few garages near us and due to the car needing back ASAP (Our only car) I can't shop around too far and have no space to do any work like changing filters etc'.
  • Hyundai i30 - Totally confused!! 0-60 details, I am lost! 23 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi everyone I hope this makes sense! I am thinking of buying a Hyundai i30 of 2-3 years old. The i30 had a small cosmetic facelift in 2010. Using the same 1.4 engine, the 0-60 times seem to have sped up by 1 second after the facelift (11.6 v 12.6). You can see the difference in speeds in these two cars below.
