Kia Cee'd vs Astra vs Focus vs anything else - Buying used mid-size diesel estate: which is best - pint6x

My son needs a mid-size estate with an economical diesel.

He is considering these

1) Kia Cee'd SW 1.6 CRD 2 or 3 (either 89 or 113bhp) 2010 facelifted model

2) Focus 1.6 Estate TDCi Zetec 110bhp 2009/10 model

3) Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTi 110bhp (2009/10 model, NOT the new Sports Tourer model)

He will be buying a car with about 60-80,000 miles on it and wants to keep it for several years.

Any thoughts on the car which will provide the most painless ownership experience? My son says he is not a petrolhead and doesn't care about driving feel. I am a keen driver and would probably veer towards the Focus, but he favours the chain-cam engine of the Kia and the long warranty. The Astra is quite an old design with a refreshed "Ecoflex" engine, and I think they're well proven mechanically.

So - what to go for? any others we should look at? Skodas and VWs are out of the price range.

The Kia Cee'd uses the Hyundai i30 underpinnings so include the i30.

As he's looking at high mileage cars, the Kia warranty is longer at 7-years than the Hyundai's 5-years but the Kia is limited to 100,000 miles while the Hyundai is unlimited mileage - both have wear-tear exclusion, like all brands - the Ford and Vauxhall only have 3-year warranties as he's not the first owner.

We have a 1.6 CRDi ceed SW 2010 Facelift. Its a great car, has averaged a true 51 mpg in the 3 1/2 years we have had it. Only problem has been a leaking A/C condenser which was replaced under warranty with no problem, expected them to blame a stone chip. Loads of space, comfortable, cannot speak too highly of it. Ours is the 113 bhp model, would not consider the 89 bhp model. Stop/start is a waste of time on all cars and its no more economical in the real world. Cars registered from Setember 2010 onwards are likely to have a DPF, ours does. It simply regens when needed, no issues.

Before that we had a Focus C-max TDCi 110, in 5 years we had no issues other than a cracked alternator belt. But it was no where near as quick as the Ceed and not as economical. It was also noisier (wind and road) and smaller (especially in the boot). Before we bought the Ceed SW we tried a Focus Estate, still noisy, still slow but smaller than the C-Max. The Fords also have the Eolys dpf system which according to Fords maintenace schedule need a top up evey 37500 miles (£100 to £200 depending who you speak to) and a replacement at 75000 which is almost £1000. Most people don't nother, its not really necessary but its important to realise that after 75000 you could have a big bill.

The price to swap was virtually identical on both cars but the Ceed was bigger, more comfortable, had a better warranty and for the same price more kit. No contest especially has its been more economical.

If you go for a Ceed get one with a full Kia service history, that way no warranty arguments.

I can give you a direct comparison as we ran on of each 09 SW diesel and a 59 Zetec Climate petrol.

The Kia has a good, quick engine with the benefits of torque but my overall experience was a number of niggly faults and minor cockpit squeaks and rattles. Noisy suspension. Most issues fixed under warranty but time consuming toing and froing to dealer.

The Focus requires a bit of stirring to get it moving but that is how petrol engines are. No other issues to report. Its a nice drive and seemingly better screwed togetger car.

Overall of the two I prefer the Focus. Recently PX'ed the Kia for a Picanto (daughters now driving) but could have shifted the higher mileage Focus instead. Kia went because of my preference for the Focus.

Astra may be the worst of the bunch, but it will probably be the cheapest to service and repair.

Im not sure if things have changed, but getting parts (not including service parts) for a Kia/Hyundai was nearly always a dealer purchase. The Hyundai/Kia parts list was very expensive, alot more expensive than the Japanese manufacturers.

The situation may have changed now with Hyundai/Kia selling in higher volumes, worth checking out.

With regsrds to parts and service, researched this before I bought. Service on a Kia is virtually the same as Ford, better value since the Ford used cheap oil, the Kia uses C3 fully synthetic. With regards to parts the Kia should require none if its still under warranty, since the OP is looking for a 3 year old car that should be the case unless he bought a right unmaintained dog.

The KIAs are very good value and have long warrantys but the Isuzu 1.7 in the Astra is a proven engine capable of racking up huge mileages with little more than standard servicing as long as you religiously change the water pump (+£30) every cambelt change, the 1.7 Isuzu lump in my brother's Vauxhall Combi lasted 472,000 miles (bought off his transport firm who ran it from new) before it finally lost a piston due to a leaky fuel injector.

The Vauxhalls can be picked up really cheaply, a 2009 for £3999: www.cargiant.co.uk/Estate/details-627495-Estate.as...0

Or £4299 (slightly higher mileage) if he fancies a bit of leather!: www.cargiant.co.uk/Estate/details-626652-Estate.as...0
