Selling a Registration Number - Costs & Hassle ? - mondeoman2013

Hi,

I have never understood the attraction of so called private plates or cherished numbers and have never wanted one, much preferring the anonymity of a bland functional number, and retaining a few quid in my wallet.

However, I have just bought a new car, well new to me anyway.

It is a 1999 MB E300 estate, and it came with the original plate T 300 XYZ

where XYZ are three other characters which were the initials of the first owner.

Looking on ebay , and similar numbers are for sale for several hundred pounds.

Makes no sense to me , but if someone wanted to pay me such a sum I would be more than happy to oblige.

My question is, how would I go about selling it once I found an interested buyer , and can i get a new number (any number, preferably an anonymous T reg number) and what would that cost me.

Or might it be easier to do once this 15 year old car is ready to scrap ?

Just to be clear, I am not interested in anuy net expenditure to change my number, only interested if there is a profit to be made.

Any advise on the costs and hassle involved and any experiences had would be welcome.

Thanks

If you think it is worth the effort and the £80 fee, probably your best bet is to put it on retention (V778).It can then be transferred to another vehicle fairly easily.Check this ;www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbe...t

In my experience the firms selling number plates for you quote a high figure as to value. Of course, they are out to make a profit and require commission. After a while a price reduction is suggested. They have your business and if they don't sell it they've not lost anything.

Have a look on Ebay - The fees are a low percentage of price obtained, only if you sell, nothing if unsuccessful. Compare your reg to others and set a realistic price. Hopefully it will then sell. A few hundred is worth having rather than just stuck as a pointless plate on your car. Good luck.

Thanks,

I would stick it on ebay with a buy it now price if I was selling it.

So what happens to my car after I put that number on retention ?

Do I get a new number (any number, don't care what) as part of the deal , or is there another fee to assign the new number ?

Is my MOT still valid ?

Will my insurance dream up some admin fee or other ?

any other hidden costs ?

Maybe best to put it on retention when I come to scrap the car at some point in the future as I expect I'll be the last owner of the car.

A small point :

What something is for sale for, and what it actually sells for, are regularly very different.

Have a look on ebay for 'completed listings', and find those which have actually sold.

>You will be assigned a new age related number it may even be the original one for the car.

Is my MOT still valid ?

>Yes a new certificate will be issued.

Will my insurance dream up some admin fee or other ?

>Depends on your insurer, they may charge an admin fee.

any other hidden costs ?

>Price of a new set of number plates and just the hassle of doing it. It needs to make several hundreds to make it worthwhile.

If you have any breakdown cover or parking permits you'll need to notify them of change of number.

Yes - I would simply stick with it till you get rid of the car. No point in paying a number of years retention fee.

Excellent point to look at completed sales figures not what people are dreaming of.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated

Yes, I had looked at sold prices, they seem all over the place , but some selling for several hundred.

But also checked out the DVLA site and see that they are selling T 300 XYZ

for lots of other XYZs for £250 , which suggests it might be more hassle than it is worth to try and sell.

I guess I'll just leave it on car, even if it means people may think I'm the type of person who would want to spend money on such a thing.

People shouldn't think that, as you say it's a 1999 car which would be T-registered anyway.

The OP has stated that the car is on its original plate, so no.

But if a 'cherished' plate had been added after registration, the car would probably revert to its original identity. That had happened to a 1991 car I owned from 2009 to 2013.

If a new age related number is allocated (or even the old one given back) it will be non transferable.
