  • Screaching noise on a 16v Corrado 14 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I should probably also mention that the screaching stops after an embarrasing couple of seconds after starting the car!
  • Slick 50 style oil additives 4 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Hi all I have just bought a 3 yr 75k old 1.8 16v Ecotec Vectra and intend to do an interim oil and filter change (Yes cam belt has just been done, yes I know about all the usuall gripes... some pepole like them, get over it!) On all my previous cars, Toyotas, Reanults, VW's..
  • Mercedes E240 2 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I stopped and got the coolant topped up, but although the heater isn`t cold, it certainly isn`t warm. The car does not seem to be running excessively hot, the major pipes at the top & bottom of the radiator are hot and the pipes to the expansion tank are hottish. Somebody told me there was a bleed valve somewhere.
  • Mondeo Steering racks 7 Nov 2001 (Forum)

  • changing gears 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
One thing i've always wondered when i've been driving around.... Is it better, when stuck at lights or whatever, to put the car into neutral or is it ok to just stay with the clutch down? which is better for the gearbox or is there no difference? similarly - when slowing down etc, I tend to go through the gears since i find it gives better control over braking, but can this put adverse stress on the 'box too?
  • Mondeo woes again 9 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Is it possible to fit some spool pieces in way of the smaller cats and remove them totally from the system but still have a car that will pass emissions on MOT? If I have to replace the cat I might as well have both done, how much will this cost me?? Bill
  • Peugeot 205 1.8D - Rev limiter tampered! 30 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Can someone help me with tachometer of my 205, because the car injector pump rev limiter has been tampered by the i**** previous owner. When I took over a tractor other day, the car has pause round 4,000rpm, it doesn't feel like is limited on right rev of 5,540rpm what my manual book said, I have a multimeter tool clip the positive red cable to the alternator signal and the black negative to the battery.
  • Civic 1.8 VTEC - Poor fuel economy after little use for 12mths 1 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Hi all, I hope everyone is ok and keeping safe! I have an old 2007 honda civic 1.8 which has not been used much since Jan 20 but I since I have started to reuse this car the mpg seems poor. I filled up to 3/4 of a tank and have done around 120 miles but now I'm showing as less than 1/4 left.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - yr2004 - camshaft snapped, compensation???? 23 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Wife's cousin has a Vauxhall Corsa that was three years old in August. Car was bought second hand six months ago. Full Vauxhall service history & she had it serviced at the Vauxhall garage in August (along with the first MoT). She took it back two weeks ago saying the engine was making a funny noise, but they said they hadn't time to look at it properly & she'd have to come back in a few weeks time.
  • BMW 320d 2008 - Rear Door Central Locking 25 Nov 2018 (Forum)
That last bit sounds dubious. Does the forum agree, it sounds like a broken actuator?  On a 10 year old car that has only 2 more years in my care, £200 to repair a door I don't use seems pointless.  Is the £25 option viable for someone who's not afraid of a set of spanners and screwdrivers but no particular skill?
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - Pitted Brake discs 21 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Following up the letter published in the may 31 edition I recently had a safety report on my Grand Scenic 1.9 dci first registered september 2004 with 29000 miles saying the discs were pitted. When I challenged such unwelcome news on a three year old car with less than 30K miles I was told it was because I used the bakes a lot on local journeys and discs lasted much better on cars doing high mileage on motorways. Is this problem a Scenic failing, a general Renault problem or are all makes now requiring new discs at such an early stage.
  • VW Sharan TDi - Extended warranty recommendations 4 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I’ve decided to keep my car for another year because there is not a single car out there I want to buy, well not one that does the job I need done. Three years old, mint condition and low mileage so it can stay a while yet.   To give peace of mimd some sort of warranty is required but I know nothing about these things other than lots of people complain about them, so looking for any recommendations.
  • Focus st170 - Tight steering and pulling side to side 23 Feb 2017 (Forum)
It cost me £600 it runs like a dream and is rapid but there is my problem, Why so cheap , ihavnt had it checked out yet only breezed over by a mechanic as I had to have new bulbs and the back wiper didn't work lol . I have never had a car with so much power but I just want to make sure it doesn't have me off the road. When I flow it it wants to pull me from side to side and also the swearing it a little tight but I'm only used to old crap focuses that drive like a bout .
  • Volkswagen Golf - Golf MK6 1.4TSI buying advice 30 Apr 2016 (Forum)
So I think (after some really good help from people on here) I have decided on my next car. My budget is around 6-8k (most likely the higher end) and I'm looking at around 4-6 year old Golf with as little miles as possible (around 40-60 problably) and with decent trim (preferably match).

  • Audi A6 1.8T - Clutch smell but not slipping 10 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I have not noticed the clutch slipping so far, only twice recently when parking on a steep hill had I smelled it. Got car back from garage without the repair as I need to consider if it's still economical to have done. The car now stinks of burnt clutch! Did a road test, 3rd/4th gear. rev up....pulls away nicely,in line with revs.
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 99 1.8 Rear Brake Squeal 8 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Has anyone else suffered and should Vauxhall recall? The noise is very worrying when the car is full of family and you can hear at top speed on the motorway.
  • BMW 530D SE TOURING or AUDI A6 Avant 3.0 Quatro - The agony of choice 21 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Hi, after six years of treatment for cancer I am going to buy a car! I was all set on a Skoda Octavia 12 months old - BUT.... people have intervened and are demanding that I get a 'Gentlemens carraige" as I apparently deserve it. My dilemma is, I have identified  and driven a BMW 530D SE Touring which is great.
  • Ford Focus Mk1 - Ford Focus Mk1 or Mk2, Zetec.. Or ST170 24 Aug 2014 (Forum)
If a car this old is really not an issue and I check F/S/H service stamps etc, then would the ST170 be worth looking at as it seems to have everything- only thing that concerns me is the mpg which if I am on a tight budget it seems daft to buy something that is going to consume fuel like there's no tomorrow!
