  • buying a used car 22 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I have up to £3000 to spend and don't know whether to go for a petrol or diesel car, I do about 18000 miles a year and need decent enough room for one car seat and a buggy. I have thought about a 2002 Renault Clio/ Ford Fiesta/Peugeot 106/Peugeot 206, I would like a smaller car that is cheap to tax( £35 for 12 mths if possible) and run. Could anybody tell me about common faults of the above cars or which of the above cars they would reccommend and roughly the mpg for that car I have read the 106 has a high 7 out of 9 death rate in accidents?
  • Megane Clutch 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I've got a 55 plate Megane (pre-facelift) with a 2.0 VVT petrol engine. Had it about a week and the clutch is very heavy IMO. The Renault dealer we bought it from had a mechanic check it out and says there is no problem, and my own personal experiments from hopping into several other new and nearly new Meganes show that the 2.0 petrols tend to be a mixed bag, some light, some heavy.
  • Reliable cars? Seems not 5 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Business he says is booming and the unreliablity of modern cars has allowed him to extend his business and semi retire at the same time. Interestingly he tells me that the two garages that he gets most business from locally sell Renault and wait for it ....BMW. Toyotas not what they were and Nissans no better. Honda still pretty good and Mazda consistent. Merecedes he tells me isn't bad at all but A class is not up to scratch. I asked what he was now driving - an Audi S3 that has been excellent.

  • new car for the girlfriend 17 Sep 2006 (Forum)
my good lady currently has a 3 door black renault clio 52 plate 1.5 dci extreme. she wants something a bit faster / nippier. her clio has done 43k and i think she could get at least 4k for it (please, people in the know give me a rough valuation) she would like a clio sport, which i believe come in a 1.4 and 2.0 litre 172bhp.
  • exhaust gas recirculation problems 24 May 2006 (Forum)
Further to my postings of 5th and 18th of May, mentioning problems with Renault diesel engines, it seems that in Honest Johns car-by-car breakdown, under Espace 2002+,they are known to have E.G.R. problems, but this has never been mentioned on any service. But I know from experience how dangerous this can be.
  • Kangoo diesel starting 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I hope someone might be able to help with a starting problem on my 1999 T 1.9 Renault Kangoo Diesel. Most mornings, it totally refuses to start. Having loosened an injector pipe, on cranking, it is clearly not injecting, which makes me suspect it is the stop solenoid. Sometimes either with a jump start or a fiddle round with the wiring it will start.
  • Have they facelifted the Laguna? 25 Jun 2005 (Forum)
It was in silver, and the bloke was an oldish gent wearing a suit - didn't strike me as the type to do his car up. Despite not being a Renault fan, I like the Laguna. This new one makes me like it even more. Oh - and on the subject of new cars, I saw the new Focus saloon on the road before. I was overtaking so got a good look at the side and front before letting it pass.
  • V-reg Clio 1.6 Start Probs When Hot 19 May 2005 (Forum)
Over the past 3 or 4 weeks the problem appears to be getting worse. I have already replaced the HT leads, spark plugs and air filter without success. My renault dealership wants £40 for half an hour with one of their technicians to plug the diagnostic box into it - the thing is it will either start and no problem will be apparent or it won't start at all.
  • Clio RT front knocking noise 21 Dec 2004 (Forum)
A much light noise occurs going round left hand bends at lower speeds. Odd? He's had 3 mechanics (including one Renault) look at it and they can't work it out. It doesn't effect handling, but I do notice that under excelleration going straight the steering feels twitchy or less willing to accept user input....I wouldn't of thought this was due to the wheels lifting off the ground...it's only a 1.4!
  • Big Decent Estate 4 Sep 2004 (Forum)
But have also been tempted to keep my money in the bank and spend less than a grand on an old 760 2.3 turbo estate (Trust the Volvo engine miore than the 2.9 Renault thing) or a Granada Scorpio Estate or even an older 300TE. Whats the pros and cons and what do you reckon to all of these.....I'm certainly tempted by the older Volvo 700 estate but will it take the autobahns well as i tend to not hang around (got to take 100mph plus cruising) but whatever I choose will be an auto so thats another thing to go wrong with something older.
  • Clio stutters once each journey 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Renault Clio, 1994 M, 1.4RT, 56,000 miles, main dealer maintained. Owned from new. 1) Every morning when I go to work, within half a mile of starting, the engine will always stutter once. Doesn't happen again, is fine for the rest of the journey.
  • advice please, Yaris or Jazz or.... 16 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I would like to change my car. I currently drive a Renault Scenic auto, and want to move down to a small car to be more cost effective as I do about 30000 per year. I haven't been able to test drive a Yaris MMT, but have driven the Jazz CVT-7 which was great to drive except being a little hard.
  • Clio - Running water sounds - Help! 29 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The car is dry and I don't know where the water went. I told my salesmen (only interesed in me telling Renault that everything is ok so he gets his commission) the problem. He said they all do it, it is weird, but don't be worried!!! This is surely wrong. Nothing in the manual says beware of the sound of running water.
  • Commercial vehicles for Private use only 21 Sep 2003 (Forum)
How many other back roomers run a 'Commercial' vehicle for private use? As many of you know I drive a SWB Renault Trafic van 2.4T gross weight as a private vehicle for property renovation, in the same way that some people may get an old banger for the same purpose. I have problems at tips etc as they immediately assume I'm fly tipping, whereas I took more rubbish in the car and trailer and was never challenged.
  • Clio coolant leak 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Garage did pressure test and said "No it didn't". Had to drive a fair distance away and found coolant still being lost. Took it to the nearest Renault garage who diagnosed a "loose bolt just above the water pump; it's tightened and alright now". Drove it a bit; leak no better. Took it back to original garage which sold it and said "It still leaks" They did another pressure test and repeated "No leak."
  • Bumpers and o/s trim for 96 Trafic 23 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Hi Does anyone know a good cheap source for second hand bumpers, plastic bonnet trim and NSR light Cluster for my 96 Renault Trafic in the Westcountry, or even nationally, where delivery is not a problem? This van appears to be in shockingly good condition with the exception of these and a few minor dents. As it is being kept as a domestic pet, I wouldn't mind lavishing a bit of attention on it.
  • Clio 1149 D7F engines 2 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have a T reg Renault Clio 1.2 petrol (1149cc) with no trim and 44k on the clock. I have just read on the car-by-car breakdown: In "what to watch out for" "On 1,149cc D7F engines it is essential to change the timing belt, tensioners and the water pump every 3 years of 36,000 miles (whichever comes first)."
  • Is is a hum or a howl ? 2 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Any clues to this would be gratefully received ; Renault megane 1.6 S 30K MOT and service August 02 At any speed from 30 to 80, in 4th or 5th gear with no apparent associated cause, a hum/ howl starts and stops at random. Front end somewhere but difficult to be sure.
  • Fuel level gauges 19 Dec 2000 (Forum)
I read HonestJohn's reply to this, and he stated that is is something to do with the design of the fuel tank (!?!). I recently brought a new Renault Clio (X-reg) and everytime I come to refuel the car, the pump clicks (I usually stop after a couple of clicks), but the fuel gage never shows a full fuel load. It usually shows one point down from the top full-level.
