  • ford mondeo start up problems 23 Sep 2006 (Forum)
When i am driving the car seems kangaroo at any speed. I have changed leads, coil pack, plugs disconnected the egr valve and blocked hoses and the the fuel pressure valve. Nothing seems to work. I've just been told it's got a fault code 372 and the problem is with the exhaust pressure tranducer. Does anybody know what the code means and where the transducer is.

  • pug 307 hdi anti pollution + esp fault 23 Jul 2006 (Forum)
About 2 weeks ago accelerating onto the motorway the car cut out TOTALLY, around 3500-3700 revs, the esp/abs deactivated came up on the little screen, then the engine cut out with an anti pollution fault, the car would not start, I left it for a couple of minutes then the car started, giving me the anti pollution fault and the engine management light on. I've had the filter/pump changed inside the tank + the regular fuel filter which had little iron/brass filings in for £500.00 (ow !!) The fault returned within an hour as above. I have read other threads re reprogramming, I've taken it to an independant garage, should I forget about them and take it to the dealer ?
  • 1 in 40 20 Jul 2006 (Forum)
With 4 cars all taxed, 3 of which are due either this month or next I am wondering why I bother! It would be much easier to put the whole lot on fuel. Add 3rd party insurance and the concentrate on taking unroadworthy vehicles and drivers off the road. With anpr possibly illegal under RIPA the whole area of road tax evasion and enforcement is a mess.
  • 60mpg, reliable and a touch of class? 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Having just accepted a new job about 70 miles (M-way) from home, I'm looking to replace my Passat V6 TDi (auto, nicely appointed, goes well, but only 32 mpg overall) for something around the £9-10k mark which is exceptionally frugal on fuel (e.g. is 60mpg to much to hope for?), is reliable, won't lose too much value from clocking up maybe 400-500 miles a week, and is preferably auto. Don't really mind whether petrol or diesel, but I would have thought it would need to be the latter to maximise consumption.
  • Jerry cans 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
A lot of local gardening services use Jerry cans, they are approved by the armed forces, but garages literature does state to despense fuel in approved containers only.
  • Ease of fitting a headlight bulb! 23 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I bought a bulb from the local Ford dealer parts dept and asked the guy how easy it was to fit, "got to take the headlight out mate". Filled with trepidation fueled by stories about having to take VWs to dealers to have headlight bulbs changed I looked at the Haynes manual this morning, simple, pull out two pins, detach one electrical connector, the light unit comes out, put it on the bench, unclip the back of the unit, replace defective bulb, reverse procedure, 5 minute job.
  • £1.5k, A4 or 323? 12 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Friend loves the A4 and the 323, but which should he choose? Both 1.8's, both roughly same cost to fuel/insure. I've heard question marks on the Audi's reliability and the 96 SE he's looking at has done 107k, while the 97 Mazda has done just 82k and we've not heard of any problems with this model. I like the looks of the Mazda, but I have to admit, the Audi interior is a good one...both are clean, tidy cars from what we saw, and have what he called critical conditioning (ac).
  • MPG!! - Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S diesel 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I have had a new Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S diesel for just over a month and am very pleased with it. However I have not been able to come close to the fuel consumption figures quoted by Ford. The company state 54mpg urban; 72mpg extra urban and 64mpg combined but I can manage only 53.7mpg combined. I drive 10m to work, largely uninterrupted, on rural roads and rarely need to use the brakes.
  • Peugeot 406 Vibration 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
When i manual adjust the throttle under the bonnet at the associated revs the whole injection unit vibrates rapidly. The Peugeot garage said it could be the fuel pump bearings but I reckon that would cause constant vibration and not just at a certain rev. It is undoubtedly to me a certain frequency that cause the excessive vibration as once you pass the revs the vibration goes away.
  • Diesel Engines and CC 10 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The reason I ask is that I've noticed that there is a VX Vextra 3.0 diesel available and am intrigued if that would be more economical than say the bog standard 1.8 version? Of course, I would just never entertain buying a 3.0l petrol car on the grounds of silly fuel economy, but wondered if being diesel made this a more sensible prospect? Cheers. • Polo 1991 starting but not firing 7 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Jump started ok then not used it for a week, now will start but not fire. Carried the following tests: petrol ok; clean fuel filter; put new battery; sprayed the carb with aereosol. Still not working. Tried another coil (taken from the scarp yard) and checked the sparks and are a bit weak with both coils, so I guess that either the coils are rubbish and need to get a new one.
  • Moving to Oz - what cars to buy? 5 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I usually carry small tools and equipment with me, but nothing too large. A few years ago I would have bought a 4x4, but now I think they are just to heavy, fuel inefficient etc. Any tips on what to buy down-under? Practicalities, what to look out for? Many thanks, Big-G.
  • 2001 VW Polo Central locking problem 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I'm having problems with the central locking on my polo (vacuum type without deadlocks). When it's very frosty, the pump etc. works and the rear doors, boot and fuel flap unlock ok, but the drivers and passenger doors don't unlock properly. The buttons lift, but the handles (outside and inside) have no effect. Repeatedly opening & closing doesn;t seem to make a difference, the only thing that does is when the car is warmed up or it's not frosty.
  • Lambda Sensor Measurements - Volvo 240SE 17 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I can only summise that the 20 miles it was driven with no in tank pump ( Duff ) has starved the system of fuel and burnt the end off the sensor which has done 97K. Any opinions welcome. All this and still ne error codes. Thanks Guys. Regards
  • Low End Torque - Petrol engines 7 Dec 2005 (Forum)
As someone who is disillusioned by the complications of the modern diesel engines with their extremely high pressure common rail fuel injection systems and ever higher turbo boost pressures, I intend to switch back to a normally aspirated petrol engine at my next car purchase. I know there is no equivalent sized petrol engine that can come even close to the torque of a turbo diesel, but does anyone know where I could get torque curve data for various engines.
  • Golf automatic choke 3 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Grateful for any help, Our is a Volkswagen Golf 1988 4=E 1.8 . On a run back from Brighton to Bordon the autochoke stuck on and it used so much fuel that my Range Rover would have been proud. With an Escort mk3 we had a while back i just took it apart and cleaned it up an it worked fine. This time the choke looks the same (bi metal coil) except there is a wire running into the housing and was a fine spring running around inside to an end.
  • Power steering pump, what to do? VW Golf 1 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, I have a 1996 N plate VW Golf 1.8SE with the ADZ engine and single-point Bosch Monotronic fuel injection. My steering has been very heavy recently, much harder than a non power steering car I'd say! Anyhow, its got 103k on the clock so I'm assuming the PAS pump has gone. I'v been offered a PAS pump which has roughly done 93k for £30 and was just wondering wether or not it was advisable to buy a pump with that sort of mileage on it.
  • Anyone for a big gold slug? 22 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Huge great engine, leather and stuff, cool in a non-flashy kind of way and capable of being a great motorway sofa. Bad points? Ruinous fuel consumption, gold paintwork, and plenty of expensive stuff to go wrong and keep me awake at night. Any thoughts? Fun idea, or a big gold Lexus in waiting? Would you give more than a grand for it??
  • Ford Diesel - Problem Starting 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My '99 endura diesel died this morning. It's half full of fuel. It started perfectly OK but expired after a few hundred yards. I've checked the cambelt, and the camshaft's going round. It had a new cambelt kit fitted by a local indy 3 months ago. The instruments go to full scale deflection for a few seconds when I turn the ignition on, and again when I operate the starter.
