That is supposed to be the chance of being caught for not bothering to pay road tax. Default rates are going up so now about 3.6% of all vehicles aren't taxed and should be. The whitehall review suggests a third of motorcycles aren't taxed. Even if you are caught people aren't actually paying up the back tax. Debt collection agencies have only just started to be used.
With 4 cars all taxed, 3 of which are due either this month or next I am wondering why I bother! It would be much easier to put the whole lot on fuel. Add 3rd party insurance and the concentrate on taking unroadworthy vehicles and drivers off the road.
With anpr possibly illegal under RIPA the whole area of road tax evasion and enforcement is a mess.

I know how you feel - only my car or bike is on the road at one time, so I get the joys of two lots of tax!
Worth it in more than monetary value, but I couldn't afford much more.
Does make you wonder why you bother...although, I'd probably end up getting caught.

I think those are old figures?
I remember reading about the 1/3rd of motorcycles not being taxed. Alongside that article was one where the police were stopping all bikes on the way to a popular bike meet. Of something like 300 bikes they found one not taxed.
One reason put forward for their 1 in 3 is that over winter many bikes are SORN'd and off road during the nasty weather - and yes, they admitted that when they said "a third of motorcycles aren't taxed" this included those declared off road with SORN. Statistics - bah.

Typical government.
If the chance of prosecution is so low, why do they waste millions on adverts saying "our computers know what isn't taxed and will fine you automatically"?
|
Because the 95% of people in this country who are law-abiding take notice of adverts like that. It's much cheaper to remind people like you and me to pay up than it is to chase people who don't care about the law.

Unless you ride a bike, in which case only 66% seem to be law-abiding.

It's the thought of riding past all & sundry in a looooong traffice jam, that keeps me paying up the little road tax, as well as the motor. Did you know, it's so little, they won't let you pay in 2 x 6 month instalments. Ho-hum, such is life in the outside lane.
