I had this car for 14 years (160.000km) and never had any major probs?. ?till now.. Serviced at a local garage a month ago but after few days stopped working. Jump started ok then not used it for a week, now will start but not fire.
Carried the following tests: petrol ok; clean fuel filter; put new battery; sprayed the carb with aereosol. Still not working. Tried another coil (taken from the scarp yard) and checked the sparks and are a bit weak with both coils, so I guess that either the coils are rubbish and need to get a new one. Before buying a new coil that I might not need can I test with the one on the Fabia 1.4 16v? If is not the coil what else?

Should be fuel injection, not carb on a 1991 model.

"After a few days stopped working". At this point do you mean it wouldn't start, like you turned the ignition key, but nothing happened or was the starter turning but the engine not firing? Also, is this what is happening now?
Is the fuel pump still working? When you turn the ignition, do you hear the familiar "buzzzzz, clink" from under the rear seats? If not, either the fuel pump itself has gone or the fuse for this device has blown.
Lastly, I couldn't help notice that you say the mileage is 160,000 km. If you don't mind me asking, where was the car initially registered, because in the UK these series 3 Polo?s were only ever fitted with fuel injection. Also, what engine does it have?

1991 j reg should have a carb and a fuel pump at the back of the head(to the right as you look from the front of car)these used to pack up and leak into the sump would suggest you check this for flow and sump for overflow.
|
J reg will be injection, the first of the MK3's were on H plates.
|
CFI???? looks like a carb.

this model has a carb. the car was registered in Italy in sept 1990 its a 1.0 CL 33Kw 5 gear. when I say the car is not working I meant starting but not fireing ( expression used by my more expert friends)

Think they mean turning but not firing,Have you checked the plugs to see whether they are wet with petrol?,and is it a cambelt or chain drive?

ya sorry, is turning but not firing
will carry a check on the plugs tomorrow
not sure about the cambelt vs chain. my understanding of mechanics is very basic + the car manual is in italian which does not help. any easy way to identify the difference?
|
its got a belt,........take the air filter of again and see if you can smell petrol with nose over carb if not see my earlier post.
|
Apart from what oldman said, check the inlet pipe from tank to pump for splits,it could be drawing in air?

thanks for all the advices, will try and let you know.

Check for a spark, hall senders are quite a common failure on these.
|
Yes, the hall sender is not working, pity it costs 98+vat. Do you think I can replace it myself or does it need to be tested in a garage?
|
I did one a few years back. I don't remember it being hard, followed the instructions in the Haynes manual.
|
any idea if the price quoted me is correct?
|
Try GSF or a breakers. If it's done less than 100K, hall sender should be ok for more.
|
GSF quote about £35-40£ for the part, so if the price they quoted you included labour, then I would say that was probably about right.
I had this problem on mine, but was told it was cheaper to fit an entirely new distributor, which cost £110 (or there abouts).
If it's done less than 100K, hall sender should be ok for more.
Not sure about that, mine packed up at about 100k.

I have a 1994 Polo which has had problems with the HT leads, in particular the metal shrouds over the spark plug caps which seem to leak. I recently had starting troubles and left changing the leads until last as they were new less than 3 years ago. After new plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm and coil, guess what? It was the plug leads!
|
Polo running smoothly. Tried to buy a new distributor from GSF in Apsley but part was out of stock and not available for several weeks. Got a second hand distributor for 30 pounds ( from VW audi specialist in Hokliffe) and thanks to your tips and my next door neighbour handy hands the car is on the road again.
