  A 54k mile 2001X Jag S-Type 4.0V8 was very cheap at £4,025. So was a 99k miles 99S Golf IV GTI 1.8 at £2,125. A 64k mile 96P Nissan Almera 4-door saloon was almost for nothing at £400. The record remains held by Nick Heidfeld with a time of 41.6 seconds set in a McLaren MP4/13 in 1999. Since then, current F1 cars have been excluded and Justin Law holds the record for the fastest non F1 car of 44.19 seconds in a Jaguar XJR8/9 in 2008.

The car was a two month old 03 reg 893 mile 1.2S 3-door auto in its best colour of metallic baby blue. It lists at £9,190 with the paint. No one on the floor could value it, so the auctioneer tried to start it at eight, couldn’t, took a bid off the wall of £6,800 and a top but very ‘provisional’ bid of £7,100.

  However, the number of new electric cars priced under £35,000 has increased by almost 50 per cent since 2019 and more than half the models currently on the market will still be eligible for the grant, including cars such as the MG ZS EV , Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID.3   The changes to the plug-in car grant come just over a year since the last round of changes, when the grant was reduced from £3500 to £3000 .  The number of new electric cars sold in the UK grew by 344 per cent in 2020, with 21,914 cars registered.

  The British car industry is enjoying the benefits of rapidly-growing cash-rich markets in the Middle East and China for its luxury cars, as epitomised by the model line-up from Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce.
